Course Reflection Essay

1. Can you see an improvement in your own writing throughout this semester? If so, describe
that improvement and how it developed. If not, describe how areas of improvement could be
better addressed in this course.

I cannot confidently say that I have seen an improvement in my own writing, however I
believe that I have improved my presentation skills. As I prepared the documents for the
instructions, workplace correspondence, and white paper assignments, I felt that I was actively
making decisions while writing in order to check my own tone or formality as to adhere to the
general tone of the assignments. For example, while constructing the instructions assignment as
opposed to the white paper assignment, albeit two completely different assignment styles, I felt a
sense of agency with how I could interact with the tone and connect with the audience more. I
believe my definitions of tone and formality have been enhanced over the semester.

2. What was your goal for this course and did you meet it? If so, how did that happen? If not,
how do you think the course could be revised to better help other students meet that goal?

I did not have any specific goals coming into this course besides improving my
professional communications skills. I believe that I learned a fair amount of how to communicate
with different formal audiences as well. I do not know of how to truly revise this course to
improve in those areas.

3. Which assignment are you most proud of and why? If you could add any assignment to
this course, what would it be? If you could edit any assignment in this course, what would it
be?

I am most proud of my white paper assignment. That is mostly due to being able to delve
into an area that I am passionate about and have incentive to learn. I feel like I am more
connected with Florida even after researching about a rather grim topic. If I could add any
assignment to this course, I would likely add an assignment centered around responding to a
certain formal assignment. Perhaps, towards the end of the course, after analyzing different tones
and structures of professional communication, an assignment in which the students are provided
with a report, mail, or another formal means of communications that follows a specific tone.
Then, assigning the students to respond appropriately to this prompt could allow the professor to
get a grasp on how much was retained from the students about formally communicating. If I
could edit any assignment in this course, it would probably be the engagement project. I think
that by elaborating more on the topic of marketing in AR and VR could really benefit the lasting
impression of that assignment. With how prevalent AR and VR are projected to become in the
economy within the next few years, equipping students with more time dedicated to the topic or
more from an application standpoint could really prove fruitful in the direction that marketing is
going.
