(Oxygen)

Unit 2 : Respiration
Supporting Details
Supporting Details provide information to clarify, prove, or explain the main idea. These details demonstrate
the validity of the main idea. They often list parts, aspects, steps, or examples of the main idea. Or sometimes
they may list the causes of it, effects from it. Or ways in which it shows itself to be true.
EXAMPLE 1:
(1) “There are many factors that contribute to student success in college. (2) The first factor for success is
having a goal in mind before establishing a course of study. (3) The goal may be as general as wanting to
better educate oneself for the future. (4) A more specific goal would be to earn a teaching credential.
(5) A second factor related to student success is self-motivation and commitment. (6) A student who wants to
succeed and works toward that desire will find success easily as a college student. (7) A third factor linked
to student success is using college services. (8) Most beginning college students fail to realize how important
it can be to see a counsellor or consult with a librarian or financial did officer.”
32
EXAMPLE 2:
(1) “There are three reasons why Canada is one of the best countries in the world. (2) First, Canada has an
excellent health care system. (3) All Canadians have access to medical services at a reasonable price.
(4) Second, Canada has a high standard of education. (5) Students are taught by well-trained teachers and
are encouraged to continue studying at university. (6) Finally, Canada’s cities are clean and efficiently
managed. (7) Canadian cities have many parks and lots of space for people to live. (8) As a result, Canada is
a desirable place to live.”
33
Step 1: Decide what the main idea is by asking yourself, “What is being discussed here?” Underline
the main idea.
Step 2: Determine if the main idea is clarified or explained by asking yourself, “How is this idea
supported?” Look for the support.
Step 4: To help you find these major details look for common phrases:
several kinds of a few causes
two advantages several characteristics
four steps among the results
a few reasons three factors
Step 5: You can also look for addition words like these:
one first of al in addition to begin with
furthermore first also for one thing
next last of all second other
another moreover finally
Stet 6: Decide if each primary support or major detail is expanded on within the passage.
Ask yourself, “What else do I know about this idea? This will be a minor detail.
MAPPING
Maps, or diagrams, are visual outlines in which circles, boxes, or other shapes show the relationship between
main ideas and supporting details.
34
Example:
Underline the main idea of the passage below. Then circle the words that signal major details.
Certain basic fears are part of our lives. For one thing, we fear being disrespected. Bullies play
on this fear. They cruelly tease their victims and take away their self-respect. And we feel hurt and
disrespected when someone doesn’t return our phone calls or walks past us without saying hello.
Another of our deepest fears is being alone. No matter how tough we act, we know that the poet
who wrote “No man is an island” was telling the truth. We need each other. Not having other people
in our lives makes us feel empty inside.

Unit 2 : Respiration
Worksheet 1
Directions: Read the following paragraph underline the words that signal the three major details.
1. Read the following paragraph. Underline words that signal the three major details.
In our busy lives, there are different steps we take to save time. First, we use modern inventions
to help us do more in less time. For instance, we use a microwave oven to cook a baked potato
instead of baking it in the oven. Or we use the self-checkout option at the grocery store rather than
waiting for a cashier. We also save time by doing more than one thing at a time. For example, a
student may finish writing a paper while eating breakfast. Or we may take a shower and brush out
teeth at the same time. Finally, of course, we may simply rush. We may save time simply by gulping
a meal or running to catch a bus.
1. What words in the first sentence tell you that a list will follow?
2. What word signals the first major detail?
3. What word signals the second major detail?
4. What word signals the third major detail?
3. Reading the fallowing paragraph. Underline the main idea and circle the words that signal major details.
Neighborhood watch programs are good for everyone. One reason for this is that neighborhood
watches unite neighbors in a common goal. Neighbors work together to protect each other. One
family’s security becomes everyone’s concern. Another reason is that neighborhood watches
reduce crime in a couple of ways. Posted signs act as deterrents to criminals. Neighbors in these
areas are more likely to report any suspicious persons or activities. And finally, watch programs
keep neighbors alert. Because neighbors meet regularly, everyone is more aware of events, rules,
or changes in the community.
