Second Quarter - Module 2

Week 2
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module will help you learn important science ideas. You will understand these
ideas through various activities.

Below are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do Not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module.
2. Don’t forget to answer What am I good at? Before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
What’s my target?

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

What’s the meaning?

The Human Nose

The nose is the organ for smelling. It is at the center of the

face , just above the mouth. The nose is not only for smelling. It is
also for breathing. The nose cleans, warms and moisten the air
that you take in.

Parts of the Nose

Nostrils - – is are the two-small opening of the nose. The air enters
the nose through the nostrils . The nostrils are lined with short hairs
called cilia. These are the tiny hairs that you see inside your nose.
They protrude from a thin covering in the nasal cavity. These hairs
trap the dust from the air that is breathed in before they reach the
respiratory tract.
Nasal cavity – is the uppermost part of the respiratory system and
provides passage for inhaled air. It is the inside of your nose. It is
lined with a mucous membrane that helps keep your nose moist,
so you won’t get nosebleeds from a dry nose. Smelling happens in
the nasal cavity. Odors or scents are detected at the nasal cavity
above the nostrils.
Olfactory nerves – are inside the nasal cavity that transmit the
odor or scents to the brain. The brain interprets the message and
then the odor is identified.

Care of the Nose

1. Clean your nose regularly with a clean cloth or towel .
2. Blow your nose gently when you have a cold .
3. Do not insert sharp or pointed objects in your nose.
4. Do not put objects too close to your nose when smelling .

The Human Tongue

Palete

Throat

Taste buds for bitter taste

Taste buds for sour things

Taste buds for sweet things

Taste buds for sour things

The tongue is the muscular organ in the mouth used for
tasting . It is usually flat . you can make it longer or shorter . It is
covered with a mucous membrane , making it wet and slippery.

Parts of the Tongue

Taste buds – contain receptor cells . They are group around the
tongue . They send signals information about taste to the brain .
Gustatory nerve – the nerve endings that carry the message to the
brain . The brain interprets the taste of the food .

Care of the Tongue

1. Do not eat food that are too hot or too cold .
2. Brush your tongue gently when brushing your teeth .
3. Do not eat dirty food.

The Human Skin

The skin is the largest sense organ . It covers the whole body .
It protects the body from bacteria and injuries. It helps you feel the
pain , pressure and temperature. It helps you identify the texture
of the things that you touch.
Parts of the Skin
Epidermis – is the outer layer of the skin. It is the surface of the skin
that you see .
Dermis – is the layer of the skin under the epidermis . It is made up
of living cells . It is deeper and thicker than the epidermis .
Blood vessels - carry food and oxygen to the skin cells . They carry
waste away from the skin cells .
Sweat glands – small coiled twisted tubes that give off extra
amount of sweat .The sweat goes out to the pores of the skin . As
the sweat dries the body is cooler .
Oil glands - keep the skin soft . The oil keeps the skin from
cracking.

Care of the Skin

1. Take a bath always . Use soap for you skin and shampoo for
your hair.
2. Always wash you hands before handling food or touching any
part of your body
3. Never wear dirty clothes .
4. Never wear wet clothes, socks or shoes. Dry your feet before
wearing socks .

What’s more to do?

Directions : Write True if the concept is correct and write False if it

is incorrect . Write your answer on the space before each number.
________1. The tongue has four areas of taste .
________2. The olfactory nerves are in the nasal cavity .
________3. The nostrils are the opening of the nose .
________4. The olfactory nerves detect the taste of the food .

________6. The hairs that filter the dust in the nose are called cilia .
________7. The sweet taste is detected at the back of the tongue .
________8. The mucous membrane is found in the nasal cavity .
________9. The sense of smell and sense of taste are closely
related.
________10. The center of the tongue contains the most of the
taste buds.
________11. The skin is the largest organ that covers all our body.
________12. The skin can feel pain and pressure.
________13. The outer layer of the skin is called pores.
