The chart gives information about the percentage of people living in cities, towns, and rural areas in Australia in 1950 and 2010, in
terms of those born in Australia and those born elsewhere.
Overall, it is clear that living in a city was far more common for both groups of people in both 1950 and 2010. Furthermore, the
percentage of both groups of people living in cities increased over the period.
In 1950, around 50% of people born in Australia lived in a city. Meanwhile, 20% of people born in Australia lived in a town, compared
with around 30% living in rural areas. By 2010, the number of those living in cities had increased to approximately 65%, while the
percentage of those living in towns and rural areas dropped to a little over 15% each.
On the other hand, the percentage of people born outside of Australia that lived in cities was around 60% in 1950, and 80% in
2010. Notably, a significant portion of those who weren’t born in Australia lived in rural areas in 1950 (40%); however, this figure
dropped substantially in 2010 to around 5%.

Poor countries are often given financial aid from richer nations in an attempt to provide the citizens of those disadvantaged
countries with a better standard of living and quality of life (1). However, this kind of aid rarely solves the issue of poverty, and
therefore I completely agree that richer nations should provide other forms of help.
Firstly, in order to truly help people from poorer nations in the long term, governments and citizens should be provided with
good quality education (2)
. For example, only in recent times have people from richer countries spread awareness and
education (3) to those from poorer nations about the simple, yet life-saving practices of hand washing and personal hygiene.
This has resulted in significant improvements in the general health and well-being (4)
of people in poorer countries and
reduced the rate of preventable disease and infection (5)
. Furthermore, by providing education on the latest techniques in
farming and agriculture, people from poorer nations will be able to farm more efficiently, giving them more access to food,
which will essentially provide them with adequate nutrition to ward off hunger and disease (6).
Secondly, rather than simply providing money, richer nations should provide governments from poorer countries with
access to new technology and equipment (7). By providing such countries with specialised farming machinery, or life-saving
medicines and medical equipment, the lives of poorer people will be significantly enhanced (8)
. Furthermore, while many
poorer countries may have access to significant amounts of natural resources, such as fossil fuels, minerals, and precious
metals (9), they often do not have the technology or equipment to mine and refine such resources. As a result, many wealthier
countries often take advantage of this situation (10)
and mine the resources of those poorer countries while paying them a
fraction of their worth (11).
In conclusion, while giving financial aid to poor nations can be beneficial in the short term, providing education and technology
will benefit them more in the long run.

Poor countries are often given financial aid from richer nations in an attempt to provide the citizens of those disadvantaged
countries with a better standard of living and quality of life. While this kind of aid may not always solve the issue of poverty, I
disagree with the idea that richer nations should provide other forms of help.
Firstly, all forms of aid cost money, whether it be medical aid, education, employment, trade agreements or cash itself (1).
Therefore, if a poor country cannot use money in an appropriate manner to lift its citizens out of poverty (2), then it is highly
unlikely that any other form of aid will bring long term benefits either. For example, if a poor country is given education on
basic hygiene in order to improve the general health of citizens, but those same citizens do not have access to clean water or
sanitary living conditions (3) due to a lack of money, then the education is worthless. Likewise, if a country is given life-saving
medicines but the citizens do not have access to basic food and nutrition, then they are bound to remain destitute (4).
In conclusion, I do not believe that providing other forms of aid besides money will help a country anymore than by providing
money itself, and that it is more dependent on the attitudes and culture of the people to build the wealth of a country.

The graph compares the number of foreign travellers that visited three different types of areas in a particular European country
over a twenty year period from 1987 to 2007.
Overall, coastal areas attracted the largest amount of foreign tourists in most years of the survey, while mountainous areas
appeared to be the least popular for the most part. In addition, the number of tourists travelling to all three areas increased over
the period.
In 1987, around 40,000 foreign travellers visited the coast of this European country. This figure dropped slightly to around
35,000 visitors in 1992, after which it began to rise, reaching approximately 75,000 visitors in 2007. Meanwhile, the number of
foreign travellers visiting the mountains fluctuated between 20,000 and 30,000 during the first half of the period, before rising
further to around 35,000 tourists in 2007.
The number of foreign tourists visiting the lakes of this country continually rose over the first fifteen years of the period,
peaking at 75,000 visitors in 2002. However, this figure began to drop significantly in the remaining years, reaching 50,000

In many countries around the world, specialised sporting facilities for top-level athletes (1) are prioritised over those that cater
to the general public (2). Although providing such facilities for everyone to use is extremely important, I believe that providing
specialised facilities for high-level athletes is still a positive development.
On one hand, providing sport and exercise facilities for general public use allows people to enjoy the benefits (3) that playing
sport and doing exercise brings, which ultimately benefits a country (4) as a whole in the long term. When given adequate
facilities and equipment (5), citizens are able to improve their health and wellbeing by doing exercise and playing sport
(6)
. By improving the overall health of the general population, a country will have less healthcare costs (7) and a higher level
of happiness and wellbeing (8)
amongst its citizens. Furthermore, by giving children better access to sports facilities (9)
,
a higher number of young people are likely to excel in sport (10)
, giving the country a better chance at producing high-level
athletes.
On the other hand, building specialised facilities for high-level athletes has enormous benefits for a country that wishes to
prove itself as a top sporting nation. For example, countries that are highly competitive at such sporting events as the Olympics
or FIFA World Cup spend enormous amounts of money on facilities for their athletes. Without such facilities, the chances of
producing such top quality athletes is much lower. Furthermore, I believe that regular people do not need expensive facilities
to play sports or do exercise. Only when young people show a high level of excellence (11) within their chosen sport should
they need to train in specialised facilities to improve their performance to a world class level.
In conclusion, although sporting facilities for the general public are highly important, for those countries wishing to produce
top-level athletes, specialised training facilities are of much higher importance.

In many countries around the world, specialised sporting facilities for top-level athletes are prioritised over those that cater
to the general public. Although providing specialised facilities for high-level athletes is important, I believe this is a negative
development.
On one hand, building specialised facilities for high-level athletes is important to a certain extent. Without such facilities, it
is very difficult for athletes to train at an elite level (1) in order to compete in international competitions. By providing such
facilities, countries are able to train their best athletes to become sports superstars (2) who will then go on to represent their
country in international competitions, such as the Olympics or World Cup, and inspire the next generation of young people(3)
to participate in sports. Take Brazil, for example. By building world-class football facilities to train their top football players, Brazil
has now built a reputation as one of the top football nations in the world, winning the World Cup many times.
On the other hand, I believe that providing sports facilities for the general population in a country is far more important than
chasing international sporting success (4). While it is important to a certain extent, spending millions of dollars on training
high-level athletes each year only brings a limited number of benefits (5), whereas building facilities for the general population
provides tremendous advantages to a country and its people. While specialised facilities for high-level athletes usually only
bring rewards of reputation and money, facilities for public use bring huge benefits in terms of health and wellbeing for the
mass population, which in turn brings about a happier and healthier society.
In conclusion, providing a country with sports facilities for general public use is of far greater importance to the health and
wellbeing of a country’s residents than training its top athletes.

It is believed by some people that efforts should be made to protect and preserve certain old buildings (1)
more so than
others. Personally, I think there are definitely specific types of buildings that should be preserved, and that the advantages
certainly outweigh the disadvantages.
Firstly, the types of old buildings that should be preserved include structures that hold a significant amount of historical
and cultural value (2)
within a city or country. For example, important old government buildings, religious buildings such as
old churches and temples, and even certain old monuments (3) and structures. Furthermore, even buildings that simply help
to define a certain era or aspect of culture (4) through their style of architecture (5) should be preserved in order to capture
an aspect of history (6)
that can still be witnessed by people today. In doing so, not only are we able to better maintain a
connection to our history and culture (7), but also add a significant amount of aesthetic quality to a city (8), which in turn,
attracts tourism and attention from around the world.
However, there are some disadvantages when it comes to preserving old buildings. For example, many older buildings require
significant amounts of money to restore them to a structurally suitable condition (9). Additionally, most old buildings that
tend to be preserved are no longer used for purposes other than preserving culture and adding value to the tourism industry
(10)
of a country. Moreover, as towns and cities grow and space becomes limited, the preservation of old buildings can impede
the progress of a city (11). However, I do believe that the importance of preserving culture in this manner is far more important
than making way for new buildings and structures, and through tourism, a country can generate enough revenue (12)
to pay
for the maintenance and restoration of such old buildings (13)
.
In conclusion, I believe that the importance of preserving culture and history through the preservation of certain old buildings
is far more important than the progress they inhibit.

It is believed by some people that efforts should be made to protect and preserve certain old buildings more so than others.
Although there are some types of buildings that should be preserved, I believe that the disadvantages of preserving old
buildings generally outweigh the advantages.
On one hand, there are some types of old buildings that should definitely be preserved. Such buildings would include only
those that hold a very significant amount of historical and cultural value within a city or country. For example, buildings that
have been standing for hundreds of years, such as old castles found throughout Europe, and certain buildings that contribute
significantly to a country’s tourism industry, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. Provided that these types of buildings
contribute to a country in some manner, and do not impede the country’s progress in any way, then efforts to preserve such
buildings should be made.
However, for the majority of old buildings, the disadvantages of preserving them are not justified (1). Firstly, the preservation of
old buildings requires a lot of time, money, and effort to ensure they are structurally safe (2). For the most part, the resources
required to maintain them are simply not justified by the advantages which they bring. Furthermore, a large amount of old
buildings that people want to preserve are located in cities. With growing populations around the world and an increased
demand for new housing developments (3), many old buildings are simply hindering the progress and expansion of many
cities (4), without providing any significant benefit (5).
In conclusion, the preservation of most old buildings brings very little advantage, especially when considering the costs and
efforts required to do so.

Thanks to the wonders of video technology, it has become very easy to learn about the way that people live their lives in other
countries. However, I would argue that although video is an extremely useful tool (1)
, written documents hold an equally
valuable (2)
place in educating people about the customs and culture of those from other countries.
Firstly, video provides people with multiple ways to learn about (3)
how other people around the world live. Not only is it
far easier to watch a video compared to reading, but it is also a lot more visually exciting (6) and interesting. Whether it be a
film, a documentary, or a short clip on Youtube (4)
, videos are a highly stimulating and entertaining way of learning (5),
thanks to their use of both visual images and audio. Furthermore, thanks to the internet, most people now have access to an
unlimited source of information (7) in the form of video, that allows them to learn about almost any subject (8), including
the customs and cultures of different people around the world and how they live their lives.
However, written documents such as books, magazines, newspapers, and online articles are still an excellent source of learning
material. Scientific studies have shown that reading is a more effective way of learning compared to watching video, especially
when it comes to the retention of specific details (9) of information. Therefore, as an educational tool (10), reading may in fact
be superior (11)
. In addition, books are quite often a far more reliable source of information (12)
compared to what we may
see in a video. Due to the cost and time that it takes to produce, publish, and print a book, the content is often well researched
(13)
and reliable, unlike a lot of the content we find in videos on the internet these days.
In conclusion, I do not agree that video is a better way of learning about how other people in the world live, though I do believe
that it is an effective learning tool.

Thanks to the wonders of video technology, it has become very easy to learn about the way that people live their lives in other

those from other countries, I do not agree that it is better than written documents.
Firstly, while watching video content can be a more visually exciting method of learning, scientific studies have shown that
reading is still a far more effective learning method, especially in terms of information retention (1)
. This is primarily because
watching video is more of a passive activity , and it is therefore easy to lose focus and concentration
(2) (3)
on the content.
Reading, on the other hand, requires a more active and focused concentration (4)
from the learner, which results in a higher
rate of specific pieces of information being retained (5)
. Secondly, written documents are a far more accessible method of
learning that can be used anywhere at any time, as they do not require computers, televisions, and electricity like video content
does.
Furthermore, books are quite often a far more reliable source of information compared to what we may see in a video. Due to
the cost and time that it takes to produce, publish, and print a book, the content is often well researched and therefore more
reliable. With video, however, virtually anyone with a smartphone and computer is able to film and create a video which they
can release on the internet, regardless of whether the content is accurate or misleading (6). This is one of the main causes
of why there is so much fake news that has spread throughout the internet these days. With little effort, someone can produce
and spread video content about people around the world which may not be true.
In conclusion, I do not agree that video is a better way of learning about how other people in the world live, though I do believe

The diagram depicts how rainwater is harvested, treated, and stored for the purpose of drinking water.
Overall, there are five key stages in the process of harvesting rainwater for drinking, beginning with the capture of water
when it rains, and ending with clean drinking water available inside people’s homes.
Firstly, when it rains, water is captured on the roofs of people’s homes. The water runs down the roof and into the gutters, where
it then flows into drainage pipes attached to the side of the houses. All drainage pipes from the houses flow into one larger
system, from where the water is then run through a water filter. Once the water is filtered, it then flows into large storage tanks
where it is held until a later time.
From the storage tanks, the water is transferred to a treatment tank where chemicals are added to it. The water is then ready
to be delivered via pipes that flow from the treatment tanks to the taps inside people’s homes.

Some people believe that the most effective way for children to learn how to cooperate with one another is to engage them
in team sports (1) at school. Personally, I completely agree with this idea and will outline several reasons why in the following
essay.
Firstly, participating in team sports (2) at school helps children to improve their communication skills (3), which are essential
for effective cooperation. When children are engaged in team sports, whether it be basketball, football, or any other team
sport (4) that requires communication between the players, it is essential that they learn how to communicate with one another
effectively in order to win the match. This can be achieved through verbal communication (5), body language (6), hand signals
(7)
, or other forms of communication, and by regularly practising the many forms of communication involved in playing team
sports, children are improving their ability to cooperate with one another simply through an improved ability to communicate.
Secondly, by taking part in team sports at school, children learn the effectiveness of working together in order to reach a
common goal (8), which is the basis of cooperation (9). By playing team sports, children are forced to learn how to work
together in order to win a match. In many team sports, training sessions focus on drills (10) that train students how to execute
certain strategies (11) that require them to cooperate with one another, and by doing so, they get to experience the benefits
of working together firsthand (12). If children do not have a good understanding of exactly how working together to reach a
common goal is far more effective than working independently, then they will not have the desire or enthusiasm to cooperate
with others.
In conclusion, team sports help students improve their communication skills and allow them to experience first-hand the results
of working together, which will then inspire and motivate them to cooperate better with others in the future.

Some people believe that the most effective way for children to learn how to cooperate with one another is to engage them in
team sports at school. Personally, I disagree with this idea and will outline several reasons why in the following essay.
Firstly, although team sports can encourage some children to learn how to cooperate with one another (1), it is not always the
case (2). For example, there are many children who do not like to play sports or are not capable of participating in certain sports due
to limited physical ability (3) or lack of athleticism (4). For these types of kids, playing sports often leads to feelings of low self-
esteem and disappointment (5), as they are not able to perform as well as their teammates, which hinders their ability to learn
how to cooperate (6). Furthermore, many children are not mature (7) enough to deal with the pressures of winning and losing
, and will often blame their team members for their team’s loss (9), leading to further complications regarding teamwork and
(8)
cooperation.
Ultimately, there is not one specific best way for children to learn how to cooperate, as every child learns in their own unique way.
Scientific studies have shown that children learn best when they are having fun. So, for kids who love to play sports, this may be
the best method, while for others, playing computer games may be the best way to learn how to cooperate. Furthermore, sports
can become highly competitive, and this may hinder children’s willingness to cooperate, as many children want to score the most
points in a match, or kick the winning goal. Therefore, I believe that participating in activities where the focus is centred on having
fun (10), and less on competitiveness, will give children the best chance to learn how to cooperate.
In conclusion, while playing sports can help some children learn how to cooperate, I do not believe it is the best method for every
child.

The pie charts illustrate the average percentage of an employed person’s day spent doing different activities in 1958 and 2008,
in a particular country.
Overall, employed people in this particular country spent the most amount of time in a day, in both 1958 and 2008, at work.
Furthermore, there was an inverse relationship between working and sleeping over the 50 year period.
In 1958, working people in this country spent one-third of their day at work, followed by just under one-third of their day
sleeping. Going out with friends or family took up the next largest portion of time in a day, at 19%. Meanwhile, travelling to
work was the activity that took up the least percentage of time in someone’s day.
Fifty years later, the percentage of a day that people spent at work increased to 42%, while the figure for sleeping had
dropped to 25%. Less time was spent going out with family and friends (6%), but more time was allocated to relaxing at
home (13%). In addition, the figure for the portion of day that people spent travelling to work quadrupled to 8% over the
period.

These days, there are fewer students choosing to undertake a science-based degree (1) at university in many countries around
the world. There are several potential reasons for this trend, and a number of possible effects on society.
Firstly, there are perhaps a number of reasons for the declining rate of students studying science at university. In the past, the
variety of courses available for students to choose from was quite limited. Standard science-based degree majors (2), such
as physics, chemistry, and biology, were among some of the more popular choices as they were at the time considered to be
a pathway into a respectable career (3)
. However, with an ever-evolving job market (4)
, and more and more specialised
degrees (5)
on offer at university, science degrees are now often seen as mundane , highly theory based, and therefore less
(6)
appealing than other options. Furthermore, most careers in science do not offer the lucrative salaries (7)
, or glamorous
lifestyle (8)
that comes with many other modern careers.
However, with fewer students studying science at university, it is likely that there will be a short term shortage of scientists in
the future. This may pose some problems (9) for companies looking to hire graduate scientists (10), which may in turn slow the
rate of scientific research and discovery (11). However, a higher demand for scientists is likely to drive their salaries higher
(12)
, which then becomes an incentive (13) for more students to study science again. Furthermore, governments often offer even
more incentives for students to study certain in-demand disciplines (14) at university, such as free or subsidised tuition fees
(15)
. So, while there may be a short term lack of graduate scientists, the effects of supply and demand (16), and government
intervention (17) should stabilise the issue (18) before it becomes a serious problem.
In conclusion, while there are fewer students studying science-based degrees at universities around the world, it is unlikely to
have any major long term repercussions (19) on society.

Nowadays, there is currently a low rate of students choosing to study science subjects at universities around the world. There are
likely to be several reasons for this trend, along with a number of possible flow-on effects (1) for society.
Firstly, one of the main reasons that students are no longer leaning towards studying science (2) at university is because there
are now so many more exciting careers available compared to becoming a traditional scientist (3). The idea of wearing a white
lab coat and standing inside of a laboratory doing experiments all day (4) cannot compete with the appeal of (5) becoming
a dynamic CEO of a company, a marketing and sales genius (6), a high profile lawyer (7), or even a software developer. Along
with changes in the job market, financial incentives (8)
from other higher paying careers may also be responsible for this
reduction in students studying science. Scientists aren’t typically paid very high salaries, and therefore many students will turn
to other fields of study where they will be better financially rewarded (9) for their efforts.
This trend may have several serious long term consequences (10)
on society as a result. To begin with, a lower number of
students studying science at university will result in a shortage in the workforce (11) in different scientific fields. Consequently,
it is likely that the rate of scientific research and discovery will be reduced, and this has a number of possible negative
consequences on society. With reduced scientific research, the number of new life-saving medicines (12) introduced into the
market each year may be reduced significantly, resulting in poorer health conditions for many people. Furthermore, scientific
studies on the environment and the effects of human activities may also be reduced, affecting the way and speed at which we
respond to environmental crises (13).
In conclusion, while more appealing careers have led to a drop in the number of students studying science at university, the
flow-on effects of this trend may slow down the time it takes for scientific breakthroughs (14) in medicine and environmental
issues to occur.
