What is Edge Preparation in

Welding?
Edge preparation is the
process of preparing the
edges of the joint members,
by cutting, cleaning, plating,
or other means.

What is the importance of

edge preparation?
The purpose of edge
preparation is to remove any
irregularities that may be
present on the surface of the
metal and to create a clean,
flat surface for the weld to be
made. Edge preparation is
an important step in ensuring
a high-quality weld.

What are the methods of
edge preparation?
There are various methods
of edge preparation,
depending on the type of
metal being welded and the
desired results. Some
common methods of edge
preparation include:

Cutting: This is the most

common method of edge
preparation. Cutting removes
any unevenness on the
surface of the metal and
creates a clean, straight
edge for welding.

Cleaning: This involves

removing any dirt, grease, or
other contaminants from the
surface of the metal. This is
done to ensure that the weld
area is clean and free of any
foreign materials.

Plating: This process

involves coating the surface
of the metal with a thin layer
of another metal. This is
done to protect the surface
of the metal from corrosion
or other damage.

How do you prepare the

edges of the metal prior to
welding?
1. The first step is to cut the
metal to the desired shape
and size.

2. Next, the metal is cleaned
to remove any dirt, grease,
or other contaminants.
3. Finally, the edges are
plated with a thin layer of
another metal.

Joint preparation in welding

It is a critical step in ensuring
a high-quality weld. By
taking the time to properly
prepare the edges of the
metal, you can ensure that
your weld will be strong and
durable.

F. Developing mastery
(Leads to Formative Assessment 3)
G. Finding practical applications of concepts and The teacher will ask the
skills in daily living students in what situation
where the students can
apply their knowledge of:
a. cleaning the surfaces and
edges of metal,
b. essential welding
procedures.
H. Making generalizations and abstractions about The teacher will ask
the lesson question.
Based on what we have
discussed what are the
procedures in cleaning the
surfaces and edges of
metal?

I. Evaluating learning The teacher will give the

students a formative
assessment using multiple
type of test.

J. Additional activities for application or After checking the written
remediation exam those who failed will
retake the examination
given. After they passed,
they will be asked some
questions about the topic.
