Analyzing the Significance of Primary Sources to the History of the Filipino People

Exercise 2.2.2
Understanding the Bangsamoro Peace Problem
and the Bangsamoro Organic Law

Name: Neil Andre M. Borgador Section: B3

Instructions: In July 2018, the historical signing into law

of the long-awaited Bangsamoro Organic Law finally took
place. It has always been the goal of every administration to
put an end to the Moro conflict which has its origins in the
country’s colonial period. In a 500-word essay, look into the
identified causes of Moro conflict in the country in relation to
the documentary, Raiders of the Sulu Sea, and analyze how the
Bangsamoro Organic Law can possibly address the issue.

Bangsamoro Organic Law gives authority to the provinces under the bangsamoro
region of mindanao to establish their own government and have a set of laws but
still within the sovereignty of the Philippines. Before the colonization of the
Spaniards, Mindanao was influenced by the neighboring countries Brunei and
Malaysia in terms of culture and beliefs.

Most civilians in Mindanao were already muslims when the Spaniards came and
tried to conquer the land. Muslims drive away the Spaniards because Spaniards
intend to change the culture of the muslims by introducing Christianity as the
religion. Mindanao at that time is like a country, the have an economic activity of
trading, voyaging, ship making, pagpapanday, and slave raiding. Muslims from this
time want a total separation from the colonized region of the Spaniards because
they wanted an independent region to avoid the clash of culture and influencing
each other’s religion. The Spaniards have failed with their mission in colonizing the
Mindanao region. They failed to introduce God in christianity, conquer the
resources, especially Gold, and establish their glory through colonization.

The Bangsamoro people's central political fight revolves around their attempts to
acquire autonomy as a separate and independent state, or at the very least to attain
some degree of self-determination as a people separate from the Filipino country.
Leaders and representatives of the Bangsamoro people have frequently argued that
the annexation of their ancestral lands into the Philippine state is unlawful and is
solely the result of decisions made by Spanish and American colonial
administrators, as well as subsequent assertions made by the government of the
Philippines, which is based in Manila. identity: through growing Morohood.

Readings in Philippine History

The Bangsamoro tribes have continuously reaffirmed their identity

as a people distinct from the non-Muslim Filipinos throughout the
history of the Philippine Islands as a colony and later as a republic.

There are many different types of Muslims in the country. The same
goes for all ethnolinguistic groups who have adopted Islam. Muslims
urged the promotion of Muslim unity, not by preserving or restoring
individual historic polities, but by creating a new, transcendent
Filipino Muslim Within an Islamic context, those in positions of
authority and leadership are answerable to the public. The "
constitutional" nature of Islamic government can be summed up as
the agreement of the governed to be controlled by a predetermined
set of rights and obligations. Islam is the foundation of Muslim law.
Islam has a democratic political system. The system is participative
from the point of creating the institutional framework of governance
to the point of maintaining it. It indicates that decisions on
leadership and policy will be made with the full, gender-neutral
participation of the governed through a democratic election process.
The "constitutional" nature of Islamic government can be summed up
as the agreement of the governed to be controlled by a
predetermined set of rights and obligations. Islam is the foundation
of Muslim law.

Bangsangmoro Organic law addresses the issue of independence of

the muslims because muslims in Mindanao have their own culture
and they want to avoid religious persecution. Muslims wanted to
establish laws that revolves around Islam religion unlike laws under
the constitution of the Philippines which was greatly influenced by
Catholicism.

Exercise 2.2.3
Assessing the Importance of the Primary Sources
in Understanding the Grand Narrative of Philippine History

Name: Neil Andre M. Borgador Section: B3

Instructions: Give (3) three reasons why the documentary,

Raiders of the Sulu Sea, is important to the grand narrative of
Philippine history.

1.
Raiders of Sulu Sea accounts that the first religion to enter the
country was Islam. It was introduced by the neighboring
countries Brunei and Malaysia to the people of Mindanao
whenever trading happens.

2. It documents the early economic activity of the Muslims such

as slave raiding, resources trading, marine navigating, and
ship and sword making.

3. The documentary can serve as evidence that provinces included

in the Bangsamoro region has their own sovereignty and can be
considered as an independent country due to its culture, social
classes, and religion.
