Design of Base Slab
Design as a 2-way spanning slab, simply supported at edges. Assume that the pressure beneath the
slab is uniform and is generated by the weight of the walls spread over entire area.

Example-01 Rectangular Tank Design

Similarly we can design the top slab (if it is provided which is not in this
case) for the tank, it is assumed that the tank top slab act as a simply
supported on supporting walls.

For thickness of the top slab, use

Thickness = t = perimeter/180

Wu = 1.3 x (1.2 DL + 1.6 LL)

Practice Problem
Q-02: Analyze and design a rectangular single cell reinforced concrete tank.
The height of the tank is 15ft, the length is 35ft and the width is 25ft.
Assume the thicknesses of the supporting walls, top slab and bottom slab are
15”, 12” and 18” respectively. The density of the soil fill is 110pcf and the
density of water is 62.5pcf. The bearing capacity of the soil is 2tsf in addition
to that the top slab is subjected to a live load of 40psf. Design and detail the
tank and also check the uplifting and bearing pressure underneath the
bottom slab of the tank?
