the client planning to develop a mix project which is involving 30unit banglow, 5unit single
storey shop office (area: 1,500ft2) and surau with capacity of 50people.
a) Calculate Population Equivalent for this Development

b) Calculate water demand for this Development

c) Determine what it the water supply facilities(with size) to be proposed here and at what
location? Please provide your justification and sketch if necessary.

d) Calculate the minimum BWL of the water reservoir proposed.

e) Calculate the Peak Flow for the sewerage system in m3/s

f) Determine a suitable location to treat the sewerage and discharge to River B.

solution;

a) PE calculation
-resident: 30unit x 5PE/unit= 150PE
-shop office: 5unit x 139m2 x 1floor x 3/100PE= 21PE
-surau: 50person x 0.2PE/unit= 10PE
total= 150+21+10= 181PE

b) water demand
-banglow: 30unit x 2000= 60,000litre
-shop office: 5unit x 2000= 10,000litre
-surau: 50person x 50= 250litre
total= 70,250litre

c) Determine what it the water supply facilities

(with size) to be proposed here and at what location?
Please provide your justification.

Tapping point has 2.5bars pressure. Therefore,

we can put our suction tank on Plot Z.
pressure(tapping point) > HSL+min residual pressure + headloss
25m+170m>195m+0.25(assume HL)+2m(suction tank TWL)
195m > 197.25m
not enough. proved to provide suction tank at nearest
From Plot Z, we need Pumping Station to
pump the water to Plot W and put an elevated
water tank there. we may use gravity to supply
to the plot W

suction tank 1/3 (1/3x70,250=23,417litre) & elevated

tank 2/3 (2/3x70,250=46,833litre)

d) minimum BWL of the water reservoir proposed

BWL > HSL + 7.5 + HL

HSL= 200+10(building height)+1.5(watertank)= 211.5m

BWL= 211.5+7.5+1(assume headloss)= 220m

e) Peak Flow
Peak factor = 4.7(PE/1000)-0.11 = 4.7 (181/1000)-0.11 = 5.67

Q = peak factor x PE x 225 l/d

= 5.67x 181 x 2.6x10-6(convert)
= 2.67x10-3 m3/s

f) suitable location to treat the sewerage and discharge to River B.

§ IWK only allow 1 STP for each development project and the proposed STP is 181PE only
(note: higher than 150PE cannot use septic tank).

§ (note: since the question are not mention the full scheme of development, thus
we assume there will be 2situation).
§ Sewage from Plot X to be conveyed by gravity sewer line into pumping station at Plot Y.
After that, the sewage from plot Y is pumped to proposed gravity manhole at Plot W.
§ At Plot W, sewage is flow by gravity sewer line across the Plot W & cater for Plot W
catchment. After that, will be discharge to gravity sewer line at Plot Z and further to
proposed MSTP at Plot Z. Drop manholes need to be introduced from Plot W to Plot Z.
§ Sewage will be treated at STP at Plot Z and discharge to River B.

§ BUT, if Plot X&Y is not populated area, Plot W will be a suitable locations to put MSTP
and the treated effluent will be discharge by open cascading drain to Plot Z then to
River B
