INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The importance of Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) courses, in

achieving excellence and preparing students for the workforce cannot be

underestimated. At Davao City National High School (DCNHS) where a

significant number of TVL learners are enrolled it is evident that the quality of

their education and their ability to succeed in the job market are closely linked

to the availability of resources and equipment in their learning environment.

This research focuses on an issue; the lack of equipment and its impact on

the academic performance of TVL learners specifically those specializing in

Domestic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (DomRAC). Ensuring that

students have access to the tools for hands on learning is crucial for both

success and readiness, for future employment.

Recent research emphasizes the significance of having access, to the

equipment and resources in education. According to Davis (2018) the

availability of resources directly impacts students ability to grasp the aspects

of their chosen fields. A study by Smith (2019) specifically highlights that in

DomRAC a lack of equipment can greatly hinder the development of skills. As

a result not having access to tools not hampers students academic success

but also reduces their chances of finding employment after graduation. On the

hand Johnson (2020) presents a perspective by emphasizing that effective

instruction and high quality teaching methods are equally important factors, in

determining students academic performance. Johnson’s research suggests

that while equipment plays a pivotal role, a comprehensive approach that

combines skilled instructors and state-of-the-art resources is paramount. This

contradiction highlights the need to examine the relative weight of equipment

against pedagogical quality in the context of DomRAC programs, ultimately

calling for a more nuanced investigation.

Learners specializing in DomRAC at Davao City National High School

are the focus of this research, which fills a crucial gap in current literature by

examining the direct effects of equipment shortages on academic

performance. Given the multitude of perspectives and understanding available

in educational research, it is imperative to conduct a targeted inquiry specific

to this context.

By investigating the impact of equipment scarcity on DomRAC

classrooms' TVL learners academics, our research targets a more holistic

comprehension. The ultimate purpose here is to enable informed decisions by

educators, policymakers, and institutions, by answering the redundant

equivocal questions. This way, the learning environment for TVL students can

be improved, benefiting from the illumination provided by the investigation.

Our ultimate goal is to boost the efficiency of technical-vocational education

and optimize the learning experience for TVL students, complementing the

skill set and cultivating a more employable workforce to cater to the region's

needs.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this SOP is to investigate the correlation between

insufficient availability of equipment and the academic performance of student

enrolled in the Domestic Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning(DomRAC)

program within Davao City National High School’s Technical Vocational-

Livelihood(TVL) track.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following research

questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of DomRAC Learners in DCNHS?

A. Sex

B. Age
C. Final Grade in DomRAC

2. What is the Level of Knowledge and Lack of Equipment in

DomRAC?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the final grade in

DomRAC and the level of knowledge in the subject?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research study aims to comprehensively investigate the relationship

between the availability of equipment and academic performance among

Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) learners in the context of Domestic

Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning (DomRAC) at Davao City National High

School (DCNHS). This section show the scope and delimitation of the study,

providing a clear statement and understanding of the boundaries within which

the research will be conducted. The geographic scope is specific to Davao

City National High School, that is located in Davao City, Philippines. The

subject area focuses on TVL learners enrolled in the DomRAC program at

DCNHS, and the data collection period will span one academic year,

commencing from August 2023 to May 2024. The research utilizes a

combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, including

surveys and interviews, involving a minimum of 200 TVL learners surveyed

and a subset of 20 students interviewed for in-depth insights. However, this

study excludes other TVL domains, does not include educational institutions
outside of DCNHS, is delimited to TVL learners only, offers a snapshot of one

academic year, and primarily evaluates the availability of equipment rather

than its technical specifications or individual conditions. By clearly defining

these parameters, the study endeavors to provide a comprehensive analysis

of the specific relationship between equipment availability and academic

performance among TVL learners in the context of DomRAC at Davao City

National High School.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study extends far beyond the confines of Davao

City National High School (DCNHS) and the realm of Technical-Vocational

Livelihood (TVL) education. It delves into the heart of a challenge faced by

educational institutions across the nation. As the world continues to evolve in

the digital age, where refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies are

pivotal in various industries, the proper training and education of TVL learners

in the field of Domestic Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning (DomRAC) holds

paramount importance.

TVL Learners: TVL learners are the immediate beneficiaries of this research.

The findings will directly impact their educational experience by shedding light

on the challenges they face due to equipment shortages. With a better

understanding of these challenges, TVL learners stand to benefit from

potential improvements in their learning environment, leading to enhanced

academic performance and practical skills development.

Educators and Schools: The research outcomes are also of great relevance

to educators in TVL programs, both at DCNHS and other institutions. By

identifying the specific deficiencies in equipment and the resulting academic

consequences, educators can make informed decisions about resource

allocation and curriculum development. This, in turn, can lead to better

teaching practices and overall program enhancements.

Policy Makers and Government: Policymakers and government agencies

responsible for the education sector can utilize the findings of this study to

advocate for policies that promote the allocation of necessary resources in

technical-vocational education. They can gain insights into the unique

challenges faced by TVL learners in DomRAC, which could guide the

allocation of funding and resources to meet these needs on a broader scale.

Businesses and Industries: Companies and industries that depend on

skilled DomRAC technicians will indirectly benefit from this study. A well-

prepared and competent workforce in DomRAC is essential for the growth

and sustainability of these industries. The study can help these entities
recognize the importance of supporting TVL programs and contributing to the

development of a highly skilled workforce.

Society: Lastly, the significance of this study extends to society at large. A

well-functioning technical-vocational education system, particularly in crucial

areas like DomRAC, has far-reaching effects on the overall economic and

societal development of the region. It ensures that local communities have

access to skilled professionals who can contribute to the comfort and well-

being of homes and businesses.
