Learning Task for Lesson 3.3

A. The table below shows the result of a study in which researchers examined a child’s IQ
and the presence of a specific gene in the child.

1. Find the probability that the child has a normal IQ.

50
P (Selecting a child with normal IQ) = = 0.4902 or 49.02%
102
2. Find the probability that a child has a gene.

72
P (Selecting a child with a gene) = = 0.7059 or 70.59%
102

3. Find the probability that a child has a normal IQ and has the gene.

39
P (Selecting a child with normal IQ and gene) = = 0.3834 or 38.34%
102

4. Find the probability that a child has a high IQ, given that the child has a gene.
33
P (high IQ | with a gene) = = 0.4583 or 45.83%
72

B. If scores are normally distributed with a mean of 25 and a standard deviation of 7.5, what
percent of the scores is:
1. Greater than 40.
P (x > 40)
x−μ 40−25
z=
σ
=
7.5
=2
P (x > 40) = P (x > 2) and the table value is, 0.4472
Since, 0.5 less 0.4772 gives as 0.0228 which implies that the percent of getting a
score of greater than 40 is 2.28%
2. Lower than 40.

P (x < 40)
x−μ 40−25
z=
σ
=
7.5
=2
P (x < 40) = P (x < 2) and the table value is, 0.4772
The area between the center and the left side region of the region under the curve is
0.5000, while that between z = 0 and z = 2 is 0.4772. Therefore, the area is 0.5000 +
0.4772 = 0.9772 or 92.72%. We added the two areas since the z-values are on both
sides of the distribution.
3. Between 28 and 42

P (28 < x < 42)

x−μ 28−25
z=
σ
=
7.5
= 0.4
x−μ 42−25
z=
σ
=
7.5
= 2.27
P (28 < x < 40) = P (0.4 < x < 2.27)

The area between 0 and 0.4 is 0.1179, while 0 and 2.27 is 0.4884. Since the two z-
values are on the same side of the distribution, we need to subtract both of it. Hence,
0.4884 – 0.1179 is 0.3705 and that is also 37.05%.
