CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Currently, all students are facing challenges in their academic performances as a result

of misunderstandings stemming from ineffective communication.

Communication can be defined as a way of transferring thoughts and ideas to other

people. Communication can either be verbal or non-verbal. Both ways of communication are

very important for transferring thoughts. Teachers and students’ relation stand on the verbal and

non-verbal means of communication. Communication is the blood of success in every walk of

life. Petrie (2011), states that communication is much more than simply speaking and providing

information. Communication takes place when “someone sends a message and the other

person receives it”. Lynch (1996) In this particular case the teacher-student conversation cannot

be considered as efficient communication amongst the two. Learner-learner communication has

a vital role in the classroom as well. Lynch mentions that students tend to understand their

peers’ statements as personal attacks. Face-to-face communication with each other helps

accept feedback as a normal and essential part of learning.

Effective communication plays a crucial role in education, whether it involves a teacher

instructing a student, collaborating with colleagues, or engaging with parents. Ensuring

successful learning outcomes relies on the establishment of effective communication channels.

Despite the perception that communication is constant in the teacher-student dynamic, it is not

always guaranteed. Factors such as time constraints, resource limitations, and a lack of

communication skills can hinder effective interaction. When communication between teachers

and students is proficient, both parties benefit: students become more enthusiastic, and

teachers emerge as significant influencers in the child’s learning journey. This enhanced

communication not only facilitates easier learning but also strengthens the teacher-learner

relationship, fostering a positive atmosphere within the learning environment.

Effective communication plays a vital in the academic performance of Bachelor of

Science in Office Administration (BSOA) students. This program is designed to equip students

with essential business and office management skills applicable across diverse professional

environments. Consequently, BSOA students are encouraged to consistently enhance and

uphold their communication skills as a means of fostering professionalism in their interactions.

This emphasis on effective communication is integral to their overall development and success

within the field.

Despite the crucial role of effective communication, the researchers have found that

certain BSOA students tend to underestimate the significance of this factor, resulting in

misunderstandings that contribute to a deterioration in academic performance. Therefore, this

study aims to fill this gap by examining the impact of effective communication on the academic

performance of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration (BSOA) students at CATMAN Inc.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Generally, this study identified the impact of effective communication on academic

performance among the students of Bachelor of Science Office Administration at the Colleges of

Advance Technology and Management of the Phils. (CATMAN) Inc.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

3. What is the impact of effective communication on the academic performance of

Bachelor of Science in Office Administration students at CATMAN Inc.?

4. What are strategies to improve effective communication

Conceptual Framework

A conceptual framework is an analytical tool with several variations and contexts. It is

used to make conceptual distinctions and organize ideas. It provides an outline of how you plan

to conduct the research for the thesis, but it goes further than that by positioning the work within

the larger field of research. It helps to guide researchers to analyze the thesis. The researcher

used the IPO method to illustrate the conceptual framework, it provides a structured approach

for identifying the goals and objectives of a system as outputs and how those outputs might be

measured to evaluate choices in process methods. The input consists of the Socio-

Demographic profile of the respondents and also involves the Impact of effective communication

on academic performance stipulated here. The process involves the questionnaires used which

is the Survey, the data gathering procedures, and the statistical treatment of data. It also

includes the tabulation, analysis, and interpretation of data. The output refers to the action taken

after interpreting the results of the study it states the general output or outcomes of the study

and knows the impact of effective communication on academic performance among the

Students of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of effective communication on academic

performance among students of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration at CATMAN, Inc..

It is only limited to the students of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration at

Colleges of Advanced Technology and Management of the Philippines (CATMAN) Inc. in St.

Saranay District, Guimba, Nueva Ecija, for the school year 2023-2024.

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to explore the impact of effective communication on academic

performance among BSOA students at CATMAN Inc. The individuals who stand to gain from

this research include:

The result of the study will teach students how to improve communication skills, how to

lessen miscommunications, and how to emphasize the importance of effective communication

in academic performance. In particular, this study is helpful for BSOA students at CATMAN Inc.

to understand how effective communication impacts their academic performance

Also, the findings of this study will benefit the teachers in reflecting on the typical

communication struggles that students may encounter. Additionally, the research may cause the

teacher to develop strategies custom-made for students to lessen miscommunication, especially

in their academic performance.

Moreover, this study will be helpful to the parents to understand how important the

communication skills for their child. They may help provide support and guidance to their

children to improve effective communication skills. Knowing and teaching the importance of

proper communication skills can help improve children’s academic performance and prevent

misunderstandings.

Furthermore, this study will offer advantages to future office administrators by

enhancing their abilities in managing and overseeing company operations. Additionally, it will

aid in the development of professionalism among future office administrators, enabling them to

effectively address the challenges within a company.

This study aims to enhance researchers' comprehension of the impact of effective

communication on academic performance and strategies for improvement. The data collected

will afford researchers a broader perspective on the subject matter.

Lastly, the findings of this study will serve as a valuable resource for future researchers.

It will serve as a foundation for conducting similar studies, enabling them to identify any flaws or

gaps and improve upon the existing research. These insights will contribute to

recommendations on enhancing effective communication skills for students' academic

performance.

Definition of Terms

Academic Performance. Refers to the academic status of students in their studies, especially

among students of the Colleges of Advance Technology and Management.

Age. It refers to the years of existence of the respondents.

Bachelor of Science in Office Administration. Refers to the students who are the main target

of this research.

CATMAN Inc. Refers to Colleges of Advance Technology and Management Inc. the institution

that conducts research.

Communication. It refers to the exchanging of messages or ideas of students of Colleges of

Advance Technology and Management Philippines Inc.

Effective Communication. It refers to effective and proper communication in school, especially

among students of the Colleges of Advance Technology and Management of the Philippines

Inc.
