Alright, very good. So, can anyone

explain to me who Darna is?
Teacher!
Yes?
Well, Darna is a local superhero known
for her superstrength and her flying.
Very good! Now, do you know any other
local superheroes aside from Darna?
None, teacher.
Well, that’s understandable considering
that most of our superheroes didn’t have
modern retakes aside from Darna. How
about your own hero? Who is someone
you consider as your hero?
Teacher, me!
Okay, go ahead.
I consider my parents as my hero. They
protect me and care for me.
That’s very nice. How about the others?
Me, teacher!
Go ahead.
My hero is my lolo. He is always there
when I need him and he makes me feel
happy and safe.
It’s nice that you consider your families as
your hero as they are always there for us.

Now, what do you think made them a

hero? What makes Darna, your family,
and all other superheroes a hero? What
are their qualities or characteristics?
Brave!
Strong!
Courageous!
Has superpowers!

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Excellent! You are all correct. Today we
will be reading about another hero who is
from Ilocos. The life of a strong and
courageous hero from our very own
locality. Who that hero is? Kindly read the
title.

Biag ni Lam-ang.
Biag ni Lam-Ang. Do you know what Biag
means?
Life, teacher!
Alright. We will look in to the life of a great
hero named Lam-Ang.

Before we delve in to the actual story,

allow me to introduce to you a special
person.
Kindly read. Pedro Bukaneg

He is also known as a hero here in Ilocos

because he is the Father of Ilocano
poetry and literature. Bukaneg is
acknowledged as the first author to
transcribe the Ilocano epic.

Biag ni Lam-Ang is an Ilocano epic. Do

you know what an epic is? No, teacher.

Well, how about the word epic? What

comes to your mind when they say epic?
Teacher, for me it would mean amazing.

Exactly. An epic is an amazing story.

Kindly read what an epic is.
Long poem, typically novel-length that
tells the deeds and adventures of heroic
or legendary figures that represents a
perfect citizen of their culture.

Goin back to Darna. Isn’t Darna the

perfect citizen? When he is not Darna,
she helps out her community during
calamities and when in her superhero
form, she fights supervillains.

Kindly read the next one.

Roots in oral tradition that predates
written word and was the way culture and
history was preserved.
I mentioned a while back that Pedro
Bukaneg transcribed the piece. Do you

know what transcribe means?
No, teacher.
Well, transcribe is to put spoken words
into writing. Because of this, Biag ni Lam-
Ang is here now.

What is again an epic? A story that tells the deeds and

adventures of heroic figure.

D. Lesson Proper
But before I forget, Pedro Bukaneg gave
us a special task and that is to finish the
story. However, the story is incomplete.
You have with you cards of the different
scenes in the story, these will be your
choices. Today, I am your taskmaster that
will reward you along the way because
right now you are all heroes on a mission.
Are you ready?
Yes, teacher!
Okay, let us read once again the title.
Biag ni Lam-ang.
Let’s read the first part.
In a small village in Nortern Luzon called
Nalbuan, now part of La Union, lived
Namongan and her husband Don Juan
Panganiban.
Namongan then gives birth to a baby with
incredible strength named Lam-ang. It
took four people to help Namongan give
birth. However, Don Juan wasn’t there
because he went to the mountains in
order to punish their Igorot enemies.

Who are the parents of Lam-ang?

Don Juan Panganiban and Namongan,
teacher.

Fantastic job. Now let me read the next

one.
Lam-ang asks his mother about his
father’s whereabout and learns that he
has gone to fight the Igorot. Upon
learning this, what do you think did Lam-

Ang do? Did he not do anything or was
he worried? Let’s see what happens. Oh
no, this part is locked.

Does anyone from the class want to try

and pick among your cards to see what
happens next?
Teacher, can I try?
Go ahead.
Let’s see. Okay, kindly read what it is.
Is it this one?

Is it correct? Why do you think that is the

answer? Well, teacher, it stated that Lam-Ang
waited before he went after his father.
Okay, lets see if its correct. It’s right!
You may pick a prize in our treasure box.
Now we can unlock this part of the story.
Now let us all read together.
After nine months of waiting for his father
to return, Lam-Ang grew up immediately
and decided he would go look for him. He
arms himself with amulets and left her
mother, Namongan.
After learning about this, he waited for a
bit and went to challenge the Igorots.
Now, let us see what happens next.

Okay, He rested for a bit, however, he

was too late. Now if you were Lam-Ang,
would you also get mad and kill them all?
Do you think what he did is right? For me teacher, I would not, instead, I will
call the police because killing is bad.

Of course, if you kill them at this time, you

would also be in prison.

Now, why do you think did Lam-Ang let

one of the Igorots live? Teacher, because Lam-ang ensured that
someone would spread the news about
his deeds and sole survivor was very
afraid.
Exactly, right. After his triumph, what do
you think happened next in the story?
Where did Lam-ang go? Let’s find out. Its
locked again. Who wants to try this time?
Teacher, me!
Okay go ahead and try and read.

Okay, is she/he right? Let’s see. Its

Correct! Here is your reward. Now why do
you think was he bathed by 99 maidens?
Teacher!
Yes?
Teacher, it’s because of his triumphant
return, many women wanted him to be his
husband.
That’s correct! Excellent insight! Do you
think in our culture, is it common for a
woman to woo a man?
No, teacher.
Why?
Teacher, that’s because its not common
for women to be forward since they have
a trait of being shy.
Just like when they say “Dalagang
Pilipina”. Very good, a reward for you,
brave hero.
But, who here it’s alright for a girl to go
after a boy?

Let’s see what happens next.

Okay, everyone read.

His hair was so dirty it killed on the fishes

in the river! Can you imagine? Who here
has tried not taking a bath for days?
Especially during the rainy days?

Now, going back to the story. After again,
another heroic deed. What do you think
did Lam-ang do next? What was his next
venture? Did he go look for another
opponent or perhaps since many women
were after him, he went to look for a wife
himself.
Okay, try and read.

Ohhhh. His next adventure is love. Do

you think he will be successful?
Yes, teacher.

He dressed himself nicely and brought his

pets. Do you think Ines Cannoyan will be
impressed? Yes, teacher.

Why is that so?

Because not only is he dressed nicely,
but he is also strong and brave after
defeating enemies.
Exactly. It’s not only about the
appearance of a person but his actions
and personality that makes them
attractive.

Let’s try to find out. It seems that this

page is also locked. Who wants to try?
Teacher, can I try?

Sure. Go ahead.
Is it this one, teacher?

What does everyone think? Is it correct?

Yes/No, teacher!
I think we’re getting mixed reactions. Who
wants to try another answer.
Me, teacher! It’s this one.

Why do you think it’s that one? Teacher, that is because Lam-ang was
going to woo Ines Cannoyan, but the
giant got into his way.
Wow! Such comprehensive answer. Nice
job! What your classmate said was
correct. You get a reward, hero.

Now, onto the next part. After defeating
the giant, what happened next? Did he
get to Ines Cannoyan? This part is also
locked. Who wants to try?
Me, teacher!
Okay, try to answer and read.

Alright! Is it correct? You also get a prize.

So, Lam-ang was able to reach Ines
Cannoyan and it seems Ines Cannoyan
likes Lam-ang, too! Well, of course, let’s
do a brief recap of his achievements.

What were the enemies that he defeated?

The Igorots.
The crocodile
The giant Sumarant

Now let us see what happened next,

students?

Since you only have one card left, let us

all read.

So, Lam-ang was also triumphant with his

love life. Now, question. What Lam-ang
and Ines Cannoyan are doing is a part of
Filipino culture. Do you know what it is?
Is it Pamamanhikan, teacher?
Very good! Now we only have one panel
left. Let’s read.

Okay, very good students! Now that is the

story of the heroic Lam-ang.

Now, what did you think of the story?

Anyone? Me, teacher!

The story was very interesting since we
were able to see different adventures of
Lam-ang.
Lam-ang was really amazing, right? The
story also makes mention of an Ilocano
tradition. Was anyone able to notice what
it was or the character traits of Lam-Ang
as a local hero? Teacher, was it the tradition to have a
newly married man swim in the river for
the rarang fish?

That’s right! But that is a thing of the past.

Do we have more? Courtship, teacher! Lam-ang courted Ines
and her parents.

Lam-Ang also displayed familial love,

teacher.
Okay, good job. Lat question, do you
think you heroes need supernatural
powers to be called heroes? Use the
diver as an example. No, teacher. Because we have now what
call “modern day heroes” which are our
teachers, families, and the people around
us.
Nicely done!

E. Application
Now let’s do an EPIC checklist as a
comprehensive check.
So, I have here on the board the
elements of an Epic. Raise your hand if
you want to answer. We will put a check if
Biag ni Lam-ang has these qualities.
Then we will answer it all together.
Understood?
Yes, teacher!
