B. Review of the past lesson

“Before we start our new lesson, who can “We talked about the concept of dressmaking
recapitulate our past lesson? Yes, Joseph?” and we defined it as an activity or job wherein
it produces a fabric or clothes that we are all
wearing to cover our physical body.”

“Wow, Excellent! That’s good to know that

you have learned something from our past
lesson. This morning we are going to discuss
the sewing tools and equipment.”

C. Motivation/ conditioning activity

“Class, I will show you different pictures and

tell me what it is. To those who will answer
will get additional point later in the quiz. Now,
look at the picture on the screen.
What did you see?”
“Ma’am, it’s a dress.”

“Exactly! What about this one?”

“Ma’am it’s a tape measure.”

“Fantastic! You’re right Benedict.”

“Ok, what about this one?”

“Ma’am it’s a scissors.”

“Yes Jasmin that is superb!”

“What about this one? Yes, Sara?

“Ma’am it’s a fabric.”

“Great! What about this one? Yes, Janjay?”

“Good thinking! Your answers are all correct. “Ma’am it’s a threads.”
Now, what do you think of those pictures? Are
they connected to each other? Yes, Princes?” “Yes Ma’am, those pictures are connected to
each other because those are tools used in
sewing.”
“Bravo! You’re learning fast Japheth."

“Today, we will be tackling about the different

sewing tools and equipment and its uses.”

D. Discussion

“Earlier, I have showed you different pictures, “ Ma’am I think those objects are tools used in
what can you infer upon seeing those objects? Making clothes.”
Yes, Vanessa?”

“Yes you’re right. Another? Yes Doc?” “Ma’am those objects are the tools that a
dressmaker will use in sewing.”

“Very good! You are all right. What I have

showed you earlier are some of the different
tools that we use in sewing.”

“Now, I will be discussing to you the different

sewing tools and equipment as well as its
classifications according to their uses.”

“But before we proceed to our discussion, who “Ma’am, sewing is a process of making
can define what is sewing? Yes, Aiza?” clothes.”

Exactly! What else, Yes, Hannah?” “Ma’am sewing is attaching an object using
stitches with the use of needles and threads.”

“Great answer! Sewing is a craft where you

stitch fabrics together. Sewing can be done by
hand or with a sewing machine.”

“In sewing, we have different kinds of tools

and equipment.”

“I have a story class, listen. I have a friend “Ma’am, I think she must take a measurement
whose name is Hilda, she wants to sew a first.”
dress but she doesn’t know what process
should take first. Can anyone of you tell me
what she must take first? Yes, Benj?”

“Good idea! But, what do we call those tools in “Ma’am we called these tools as measuring
taking measurement? Yes, Sara?” tools.”

“Excellent! Let us now discuss the first

classification of sewing tools. Let us start with
the measuring tools.”

“Who can say something about what

length by the use of measuring tools.”

“Great! Now, can you say which of these tools

are classified as measuring tools? Yes, Alvin?”

“Ma’am, tape measure, ruler, L square,

French curve and dressmakers gauge.”
“Very good! Let us have first the tape measure.
What did you observe in the tape measure?
Yes, Benny? ”

“Ma’am there’s a number.”

“Exactly! Why do you think it is included in

measuring tools in sewing? Yes, Darlene?” “Ma’am because it is a tool we used to know
what size of clothes we are going to sew.”
“How nice your answer is! What else? Yes
Sara?” “Ma’am because this is the right tool we used
to measure our body correctly.”
“Wonderful! Next we have ruler.”

“Can you describe this object? Yes, Rain?”

“Ma’am the ruler is straight and there is a

number.”
“Yes, that’s right. I know all of you have
already experienced to use a ruler. Am I right?” “Yes ma’am”

“Can you tell me why you use a ruler? Yes,

“Ma’am I used ruler to make a straight line.”
Jinky?”

“Nice thinking! What else?”

“Ruler is used in measuring and drawing
straight lines.”

“Exactly right! Now, Hilda have already made “Drafting!”

the measurement, What should be the next
process?”
“Drafting is the process of making a draft.”
“Perfect! What do you mean by drafting? Yes,
Janella?”
“Ma’am it is transferring the accurate
“Wonderful! What else? Yes, Dom?” measurement taken from the person’s body
size.”

“We need to make a draft in dressmaking

“Well thought! Why do you think we need to making so that we can have a guide or a

and to cut it easily and accurately follow the
listed measurements.”

“Impressive! Keep up. Addition for that class,

for the information of everyone draft is used
for the blueprint or the basis of the design
which can be useful for the future work if
there is a demand on the dressmaker to
produce another same product style.”

“Alright. Which among these tools you think is

used in drafting? Yes, Charl?”

“L-square, French curve, yardstick”

“Nice going! What can you say about this

picture? Yes, Khyea?” “Ma’am it is also a ruler.”

“Ma’am the shape of this ruler is letter L.”

“Yes you’re right. What have you noticed from
this ruler compared to the first one? Yes,
Catherine?”

“Yes, you’re quite observant! We call this L

shaped ruler as L-square which is sometimes
called tailor square. We used it in transferring
measurements to the draft pattern and is
used to mark fabric straight, corners correctly.
It can help to keep the grainline of the fabric
correct. Keep the scale on the fabric
and align against the edges so that the other
edge becomes completely straight.” “L-square is used in making straight lines.”

“Again where do we use L-square?”

“Good listener!”

“What about this one? What do you call this

object? Yes, Kc?”

“What about this one? Where do we use it?

Yes, Vanessa?”

“Ma’am it’s a yardstick. We use it in

these tools? Yes, Doc?”
“We classify those tools as drafting tools.”
“What a great listener students! Now, which of
these do you think are the other tools in
making a draft? Yes, Jenny?”

“Of course in making a draft we need to use a

pencil, marker, or chalk to write the
measurement and trace it on the pattern.”
“Good point! What do you called that? Yes,
Rica?”
“Marking tools”

“You’ve got it. Marking tools are required for

transferring pattern markings to garment
fabric pieces and for making alterations on
garments.”
“Remember that dressmakers uses different
marker depending on the fabric they will use.”

“We have chalk pencil or dressmaker pencil

which is common used by the dressmakers.”

“Dressmakers also use liquid marking pen

which comes in two types. The one that
washes out and the one that fades after 48
hours. The mark should be removed before
pressing the fabric.”

“They also have tailor’s chalk which is

removed by brushing and wax chalk which is
used for woolen fabrics and can be removed
by pressing.”

“Now, what do you think is the tool used by the

dressmakers to transfer marking from patterns
onto fabric with or without the use of tracing
paper.”
“Tracing wheel”

“Very good! After tracing, the dressmaker will

then use the tracing paper which is a
specially waxed carbon paper that is use to
transfer the tracing wheel’s markings to the
fabric. These comes with different colors and
it should be chosen base on the color of the
fabric.”

“The mentioned tools are all needed and “Marking tools”

useful in sewing. Now, how would you classify
those tools? Yes, Brenda?”

“Great! You have a good memory.”

“Cut the fabric.”
“Now, the pattern are already formed and
traced, what do you think should be the next
process? Yes, Javier?”

“Shears, scissors, seam ripper”

“Amazing! You processed it well. Can anyone
tell me what tools are used to cut the fabric?
Yes, Aiza?”

“Did you know what shears are for? Shears

are used to cut the fabric. We have bent-
handled dressmaker’s shears and pinking
shears. Bent-handled shears are made of
quality steel and hold a sharp cutting edge. Its
blades are moving easily and cut smoothly
along the entire length. Pinking shears are
popularly used for zigzagging or scalloped
edge or for seam finishes. It creates a
decorative edges on many types of fabric.”

“Also, did you know that cutting scissors have

different variety? We have this so called
trimming scissors used for trimming,
embroidery scissors for embroidery work and
buttonhole scissors intended for making button
holes.”

“Now, did you know what scissor dressmaker

are using to snip the thread or thread excess
and parts of the fabric that have frayed or “Thread clippers”
unraveled. Yes, Bea?”

“Cool! You know even the small thing. How

about the tool specifically designed for ripping
out stitches from seams that often results of “ Seam ripper”
an error? Yes, Cherry?”

“Awesome! How do you classify these tools?

Are they what? Yes, Princes?” “ Cutting tools”

“What a great listener! What comes next after

cutting the fabric? Yes, Benedict?” “Sewing “

“Great! You’re fast thinker.”

“There are some fabric that are slippery, how

would you prevent it from moving while “Use a pin”
sewing? Yes, Sandra?”

“You’ve got it! There are some dressmakers

who are accidentally got pricked by needles “Thimble”
while sewing, what tools do you think they
need? Yes, Albert?”

“You’re sharp! How about it, we cannot sew “Needles and Thread”
without them, what is it? Yes, Sara?”

“Outstanding! Now, where do we put the pins “ In a pincushion”

and needles if not in use? Yes, Jam?”

“Wow! Nice going. What is the most important “Fabric”

material that a dressmaker should have? Yes,

“What an awesome opinion! What equipment
should dressmaker have to produce clothes
fast and work easily?”

“Perfect! Unbelievable work, you all made a

big progress today keep up the good work
everyone.”

E. Values Integration

“Now class, why do you think it is important “Ma’am, for me it is important that I should

sew it appropriately with the use of right tools.”

“Brilliant answer Sandra!”

“Ma’am, for me it is important for every
“What else class? Yes, Joven?” dressmaker to know the appropriate sewing
tools and equipment so that they can work
fast and efficiently.”

“Magnificent answer Billie! You are all

learning a lot today.
F. Generalization

“To wrap up our discussion. Let’s have a quick “Ma’am the five classifications of sewing tools
review before you have the quiz. Again, what and equipment are measuring tools, marking
