AM2530 Foundations of Fluid Mechanics

1. Consider the two-fluid manometer shown in Figure 1. Calculate the applied pressure difference. Given,
specific gravity of carbon tetrachloride is SGCT = 1.595

2. Water flows downward along a pipe that is inclined at 30o below the horizontal, as shown. Pressure
difference pA − pB is due partly to gravity and partly to friction. Derive an algebraic expression for the
pressure difference. Evaluate the pressure difference if L = 55 ft and h = 56 in. Given, SGHg = 13.55

3. Consider a tank containing mercury (SGHg = 13.55), water, benzene (SGB = 0.879), and air as shown.
Find the air pressure (gage).
If an opening is made in the top of the tank, find the new equilibrium level of the mercury in the
manometer.

4. The inclined-tube manometer shown has D = 96 mm and d = 8 mm. Determine the angle, θ, required
to provide a 5 : 1 increase in liquid deflection, L, compared with the total deflection in a regular U-tube
manometer.
Sensitivity of a manometer is the ratio of the manometer deflection to that in a vertical water manometer.
Evaluate the sensitivity of this inclined-tube manometer.
