A. Introduction Electricity is one of the most important forms of energy which is made available in every home, office, school,
and factory. It is measured by the watt-hour when it passes through an electric meter. Because the watt is a
small unit, we use the kilowatt-hour to measure large quantities of electricity. The amount of electricity con-
sumed is expressed in kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Here is an example of an electric mete with 5 dials.

These are called dials.

To read your meter, read the dials from right to left. The first dial turns clockwise. The second dial turns counter-
clockwise. The third dial turns clockwise, the fourth dial turns counterclockwise, and the fifth dial turns clock-
wise.

Man cannot live without water. In towns and cities where water runs through pipes, every drop of water from the
faucet is measured through the water meter. The amount of water consumed is expressed in cubic meters
(m³)

Here is a water meter.

When reading water meters. The rules of reading a water meter with dials are similar to the way an electric me-
ter is being read.

B. Development Reading Electric Meter

1. Start reading the numbers pointed by the arrows from right to left, starting from Dial E to Dial A.

2. When the pointer is between two numbers, write down the smaller number except when it is between 0 & 9.
In this case choose 9.

3. If the pointer appears to be exactly on a number, check the dial to the right to find out the correct reading:

● If the dial on the right has passed zero, then use the number the pointer is pointing to on the dial you are
reading.
● If the dial has not passed zero, then make use of the smaller number on the dial you are reading.

Example:

Trias family bought an aircon last April 2,2021 because of excessive heat they are experiencing during summer
and to avoid heart attack and possible heat stroke. They want to know their electric consumption for the month
of April to know how much is added to their bill. Their March bill is PhP 723. The meter below shows the previ-
ous reading and the present reading.

In order to identify their electric consumption, subtract the present reading to the previous reading.

Present reading

- Previous reading

Electric consumption

20731 kWh

- 20585 kWh

146kWh

Cost of Electricity

If the cost of electricity is Php 8.00 per kWh, how much did the electricity cost for April?

Multiply the electric consumption to the price of per Kwh.

146 kWh

x PhP 8

PhP 1, 168 is their April bill

To know the added bill, simply subtract the present bill to the previous bill.
PhP 1168

- PhP 723

PhP 445 is added to their bill

Why is it important to use electricity wisely?
As a member of the household, how can you lower your electric bill?
(Indicator 1. Applying knowledge across curriculum area - Science)

To read water meters:

Start reading from right to left (clockwise). Read the number by the pointer of the dial. When the pointer is

between two numbers, the lower number is recorded.

2. Record the number from right to left.

Example:

Janna left her province and moved to Cavite for work last May. She always wash her hands with soap, took a
bath before and after work, do regular laundry, and regularly mop her floor with water and bleach. Sometimes
she let the water runs when she is doing the laundry. She really makes sure that she is safe against Covid-19.
(Indicator 2. Responsive to current situation)
Water in her province is free that’s why she is afraid of the water bill she will pay in her apartment. She moved

in her apartment with water meter reading of 2143㎥ and below is her present meter.

What will be her water bill if the cost per cubic meter is Php 25?
Answer the following question:
(Indicator 1. Applying knowledge across curriculum area - Science)

1. If you were Janna, will you do the same as what she is doing with water? Why or why not?

2. How important is water in our life? In this time of pandemic? (Indicator 2. Responsive to current situation)

3. What should she do to lessen her bill?

C. Engagement Kahoot application as assessment.

(Indicator 3. Use of ICT)

How to read electric and water meter?

Start reading the numbers pointed by the arrows from right to left.

Remember to record the number from right to left in the water meter.

Performance Task No. 3 (Asynchronous)

Show your answer on a short bond paper.

Compute your electric or water meter today (Thursday) as Previous reading until Wednesday as your Present
reading. And answer the following questions.

1. Give the reading of each meter:

Thursday : _________________

Wednesday: ________________

2. What is the electric/ water consumption?

3. If the cost of electricity/water is Php 15 per kWh or ㎥, how much did the electricity/water cost for 1 week?
