Activity 2.1 “Accuracy and Precision”

TRIAL MOISTURE CONTENT (%)

1 5.03
2 5.59
3 5.33
4 4.85
5 5.80

1. Are the results accurate? Explain.

- The results are accurate because of the closeness of every value from each trial of
the moisture content that have been conducted.

2. Are the results precise? Explain.

-The findings of the moisture content trial are not particularly accurate since the
measurements of each trial are not near enough to each other, resulting in an imprecise
experiment.

3. Why is there a need to conduct several trials is an experiment?

- Multiple trials of the name experiment are required to guarantee that the findings
are accurate and precise, as well as to obtain the intended goal of the experiment's
researchers. Furthermore, it is required in order to avoid a failure due to random
events.
DO THIS
In the first column identify the significant figures in each measurement by underlining
them. Then fill in the second column.

GIVEN MEASUREMENT NUMBER OF SIGNIFICANT SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS

FIGURES
1. 1988 FOUR 1988
2. 0.00054 TWO 54
3. 30.008 FIVE 30.008
4. 6000 000 EIGHT 6000 000
5. 400.00 FIVE 400.00
6. 90 TWO 90
7. 2.000 34 SIX 2.000 34
8. 0. 000 000 00700 THREE 700
9. 2 450 FOUR 2 450
10. 0.80 TWO 80

RULES OF OPERATIONS ON SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

“ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION EXERCISES”
1. 34.2 mL + 2.67 mL = 36.9 mL
2. 7.50 mL + 11.3 mL = 18.8 mL
3. 25.458 g + 42.21 g = 67.67 g
4. 56.8 mL – 3.68 mL = 53.1 mL
5. 24.65 g – 12.45 g = 12.2 g

“MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION EXERCISES”

1. 12.35 cm times 7.5 cm = 92. 625 cm2 = 93 cm2
2. 12.35 cm times 7.50 cm = 92.625 cm2 = 92.6 cm2
3. 12.35 cm times 7.50 cm times 1.55 cm = 143.56875 cm2 = 144 cm2
4. 56.82 mL / 52.4 mL = 1.0843 g/mL = 1.08 g/mL
5. 101.5 m / 9. 86 s = 10.294 m/s
