2023 SCHOOL ENGLISH FESTIVAL OF TALENTS

1. In celebration of the Literacy Month, San Juan Elementary School Unit 1 will conduct
the 2023 School English Festival of Talents which shall be held from November 1-30,
2023.

2. The activity aims to:

 Promote love for reading among learners;

 Enhance learners’ vocabulary skills, word usage and pronunciation;

 Provide opportunity for the learners to build their self confidence

 Showcase their talents in using the English language and reading


competence

 Develop competence in grammar and reading comprehension

 Emphasize the importance of English language

3. The different ACTIVITIES / CONTESTS to be judged are as follow:

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING


POEM RECITATION

Physical Presence - 30 %
This category evaluates the contestant’s entrance and presence on stage. A strong
performance will be confident, poised and engaging; the contestant will have eye contact, a
relaxed posture and a strong stage presence. It is essential that the he/she announces the title
and poet at the start

Intonation, Pitch and Pace - 30 %


In this category, consider the contestant’s volume, pace, rhythm, intonation, pronunciation,
enunciation and clarity of projection. In a strong performance, all words are pronounced
appropriately and clearly in his / her natural accent and the volume, rhythm and intonation greatly
enhance the recitation. Pacing is appropriate to the poem

Understanding - 40 %
This category is to evaluate whether the student exhibits an understanding of the poem in his
or her recitation. A strong performance relies on a powerful internalization of the poem rather than
distracting dramatic gestures. In a strong performance, the sense of the poem is powerfully and
clearly conveyed to the audience. The contestant displays an interpretation that deepens and
enlivens the poem. Meanings, messages, allusions, irony, tones of voice and other nuances are
captured by the performance.

STORY TELLING

Memory – 30%
The story should not be memorized word for word (unless it is a poem). The story should flow
when told and the person should not have to stop and think of what comes next.

Projection – 20%
The storyteller should project his/her voice so that all can hear. No electronic amplification is
used.

Diction – 30%
The storyteller should enunciate carefully and use his/her voice effectively. Personality The
flavor of the story should be brought out by the storyteller's presentation, i.e., humorous story,
scary story, tall tale.

Poise – 15%
The storyteller should be relaxed in his/her presentation of the story.
Time – 5%
The story must last less than ten (10) minutes.

READING INTERPRETATION

Emotion – 30%
The reader should read the story with the appropriate expression; feelings, gestures, tone of
voice.

Projection – 20%
The reader should project his/her voice so that all can hear. No electronic amplification is
used.

Diction – 30%
The reader should enunciate carefully and use his/her voice effectively. Personality The flavor
of the story should be brought out by the reader’s presentation, i.e., humorous story, scary story,
tall tale.

Poise – 15%
The reader should be relaxed in his/her presentation of the story.

Time – 5%
The story must last less than ten (10) minutes.

CHORAL SPEAKING

Memorization – 25%
Knowledge of material, hesitation, confusion, necessity for prompting

Synchronization/Voice Quality – 25%


Articulation, pronunciation, enunciation, fluency, projection, pitch, vocal quality

Communication – 10%
Eye contact, ability to hold attention, mental rapport with audience

Use of body – 10%


Posture, facial expression, gestures, movement, distracting mannerisms

Interpretation – 30%
Comprehension and proper emphasis, creation of mood, phrasing, contrast, expression,
spiritual or emotional
