Dear Maria,

I recently heard your radio broadcast on “children should be seen not heard”
and I am writing to disagree to the strong misleading beliefs you have
regarding the way children are raised these days.
Firstly, you start with saying how “young people have it easy”. This could
not be further from the truth. Modern day Youngsters have to deal with
massive amounts of responsibilities that were absent back in the day. There’s
School, career, social life, health, parents as well as the entire drama of fitting
in. These problems are no less for any child, however financially fortunate
they may be. And is it really that bad if children get to spend the money the
already have. It just gives them hands on money handling experience they
will lack otherwise. Additionally, your idea of imprisoning children at home
really isn’t the way to go. These soon-to-be adults need to get out there and
see the real world and how things work instead of sitting ignorantly at home
and doing something like skipping rope or playing a board game. Children
aren’t born adults. Experiencing childhood is a magical part of their journey
as is getting excited and talking nonsense. It really allows them to be who
they want to be and restricting them will just turn them into cold hearted
feelingless zombies. you say that children must be aware of their
responsibilities and act on them but young people have a lot of time to learn
about their responsibilities. At that stage in lie, they need to explore and
adventure out. The responsibilities never really end. Furthermore, your view
on school vastly differs from mine. School is an experience, unique for
everyone. It is not just a set of skills to be learnt in a specified amount of
time. Everyone’s journey is different and I feel it is wrong of you to assume
people who haven’t learnt anything academically haven’t learnt anything at
all. You go on to express your dislike for mobile phones and say that they
disrupt careers. Youngsters should be able to do anything they want and are
not solely responsible for profession needs of the country. Mobile phones are
revolutionary invention, that have saved all of us massive amounts of time
and effort. Furthermore, you have to come out of your made-up world. It
isn’t the 20th century anymore. You aren’t revolutionizing anything by
pretending it it. Things work differently now and you have to accept a more
efficient and less work obsessed lifestyle. I suggest all caretakers and parents
guide their children to a balanced exposure to everything, allowing them to
choose the best future fo themselves
Thank you.
