CHAPTER I

The following chapter will give readers the overview of the topic at
hand. It will also have a discussion regarding the background information
of the research problem, which will then be answered in the end-part of
this paper. This chapter also possesses the objectives of the researchers,
the ones who will benefit, and the ranges and restrictions of the study.

Rationale

As technology advances, information is more accessible and

abundant. Therefore, workloads for individuals such as professionals,
employees, and most especially students, have greatly increased. Another
factor is COVID-19. The setups have suddenly changed from traditional to
virtual, hence increasing the workload in exchange for things being done
online. Since the generation of students are caught up in the transitioning
between pre-COVID and the COVID era, most of them are trying to adjust
to the new setup and weight of work. It is natural that they will
experience strain and distress.

It is reported that COVID-19 pandemic triggers a 25% increase in

prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide according to the World
Health Organization (WHO). Thus, most of them will tend to rely on
coping mechanisms in order to adapt. There is a wide range of coping
mechanisms for different people. An interesting mechanism to focus on is
the making use of social media, specifically twitter, as it is widely used by
most people nowadays (COVID-19 era). There are 353.90 million users
worldwide in 2023 (Turner A., 2023). In the Philippines, Twitter is the 5th
most-used social media platform with 59.2% of internet users aged 16-64
using it. (Amurthalingam S., 2022)
Twitter is a social networking service where users can post or tweet
anything they want. Each post can be seen publicly, but can also be
restricted only to your followers or block certain accounts from viewing
your post. (Rapcikova, 2022) This social media platform also allows users
to interact with one another by the use of the following features:

• Users can follow the other user’s account, just by clicking the follow
button on the person’s profile.

• Users can like other user’s posts, by clicking the heart icon at the
bottom part of the tweet.

• The retweet feature allows users to forward each tweet posted by

other users to their own feed.

• Quote tweet, a feature connected to the retweet feature, allows

users to add their own comments to the post they forwarded.

These are just some of the unique features of Twitter that encourage
users to interact with one another. These features give students an open
space to share or unleash stress-giving thoughts, emotions, and
experiences. All these contribute to why many users, specifically students,
use Twitter as a coping mechanism.

The main objective of this study is to know the perceived experiences

of Senior High School students from Las Piñas City National Science High
School who use Twitter as a coping mechanism. It explores the different
strategies that students use to cope with various stressors. It also aims to
identify the specific features of Twitter that makes it suitable for stress
relief. Lastly, it assesses whether or not Twitter is an effective coping
mechanism for Senior High School students.
Statement of the Problem

The main objective of the study is to determine the experiences of

Senior High School Students that use Twitter as a coping mechanism.

Specific Problems:

1. What is the students' demographic profile?

1.1. Age

1.2. Gender

1.3. Frequency of using Twitter

2. What are the strategies that students use to cope up with various
stressors?

3. What are the features of Twitter that make it suitable for relieving
stress?

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

To find the effectiveness of Twitter as a coping mechanism for Senior High

School students.

To find out the different ways on how Senior High School students
effectively use Twitter as a coping mechanism.

To compare the before and after state of people who use Twitter as a
coping mechanism as they post tweets.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

The findings of this research will benefit society by providing

information about the effectiveness of using Twitter as a coping
mechanism for Senior High School students. Additionally, this study will
determine how Senior High School students effectively use Twitter as a
medium of venting out to help them destress, especially for those who
experience mental instability.

Students

The students will be able to discover the effectiveness of using

Twitter as a coping mechanism and help them solve their mental
instability faster.

Parents

The parents or guardians will have a better understanding of how

Twitter can effectively help their children and use it as a coping
mechanism.

Twitter users

Twitter users can have a valid reason to access the social media
platform more often if this study can show that it can be an effective
coping mechanism and can be beneficial for students.

Schools

Schools in the Philippines may promote this social media platform to

address difficulties with students’ mental instability if this study can prove
that Twitter can effectively be used as a coping mechanism.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study utilizes a descriptive method primarily focusing on

elaborating the experiences of Senior High School students in using
twitter as a coping mechanism. The participants of the study include 30
senior high school students (Twitter users) from Las Piñas City National
Science High School, during the school year 2022-2023. All senior high
school students can be the participants of this study and they will be
chosen using Purposive Sampling. The researchers will get the responses
from the respondents via questionnaires. The questionnaire will be
composed of 10 questions. 5 close-ended (yes or no) questions and 5
open-ended questions relating to their twitter usage experiences. The
duration of this research will last for 4 months, starting from February 20,
2023 to May 25, 2023.

This study is limited to the usage of Twitter, a social media platform, as a

form of coping mechanism for senior high school students. This study
excludes other areas namely: Twitter as a medium for information
dissemination, entrepreneurial promotion, graphical content, as a
newsroom, and as a livelihood. The experiences of age-brackets other
than that of senior high school students is also not included in the study.
CHAPTER II

This chapter possesses the related literature of the different scopes

of the study at hand. These scopes are: Coping mechanism, Social Media,
and Twitter itself. Given that these are literature from the past, this
chapter will help provide a strong foundation in understanding the effects
of Twitter to its users and if it can be used as a coping mechanism.

I. Coping Mechanism

Though considered a normal part of daily life, stress is any negative

event, whether minor or major, which causes the body to adapt and
undergo physiological, psychological, cognitive, behavioral, or emotional
change (Bonjak, Mina et al. 2019). Stressors, the stimuli that the causes
stress, can come from many sources and be experienced by everyone. As
described in a study, the following are the identified sources of stress for
any person: the person’s self (self-criticism and personal standards),
social environment (critcism from others), conflicting roles (parent vs.
child or vice versa), behavioral setting (isolation or oversocialization),
working environment, workload (overload or underload), organization,
and cultural condition (Reif, Julia et al. 2021).

Acute stress or minor stress is not said to have a significant or

evident negative impact. However, when repeatedly experienced, it
becomes chronic stress. In the phase of chronic stress, the human body is
subjected to exhaustion of the body due to the overexertion to create an
adequate reaction. If continued over a prolonged period, the exhaustion
could lead to immunological dysfunction. Additionally, in 2017, it was also
reported by the World Health Organization that stress is one of the causes
of 60% of known diseases. Some mental disorders also exhibit a direct
association to stress i.e. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (Bonjak, Mina et
al. 2019)

College students, for example, typically experience stress daily.

Having numerous stressors while lacking coping mechanisms can be
detrimental to students’ success and overall health (Gallagher et al.
2019). Coping mechanisms are the proposed effective interventions to
reduce the negative effects of stress, specifically in higher education.

"Coping styles" or coping mechanisms are the varying ways of

dealing with a specific type of stressor, or simply the behavior that a
person shows in response to stress. These mechanisms help people
adjust, cope, and regain stability before and after a stressful situation.
Coping mechanisms are voluntary mobilization acts that help reduce or
tolerate stress. Defense mechanisms, on the other hand, are involuntary,
subconscious, or unconscious adaptive responses, but both of these
mechanisms have the same purpose: managing stressors. (Algorani and
Gupta 2022).

II. Social Media

There are some proven benefits of using social media in various

aspects. One benefit is that it can make people feel better and help them
improve their mental health. Another advantage is that it improves
people's cognitive abilities (Hertzog, Kramer, Wilson, and Lindenberger
2009)

The researchers would like to add emphasis to a gap that the

researchers overlooked and discovered in this research study: finding and
doing other things as coping mechanisms in our gadgets. The researchers
have recently discovered that activities such as watching movies and
reading e-books on our devices can also be used as a coping mechanism
for students (ChanLin 2013)

There are a number of proven negative effects of excessive use of

social media. Those would be the reduction of real human interaction,
increased time wastage, and reduced researching capabilities. (Akram and
Kumar 2017).

On the other hand, because social media is widely accused of

dealing harmful effects to its users, especially adolescents, its benefits are
widely neglected. One solid example is that it has a number of
educational aids. Social media is a platform that may be used for different
learning purposes. Comprised under those purposes are the following:

 Communication channels - it is proven that the increased

connection and communication between students and learners
(Jones and Jones 1981). As social media is established for
communication purposes, it may be used as an effective tool in
the aspect of education and learning (Faizi, Afia, and Chiheb
2013)
 Engagement tools - social media may attract the attention of
students towards the learning opportunities provided by
schools and learning institutions (Rutherford 2012). By using
social media for pastime, it may redirect the focus of students
towards the resumption of their academic activities.
 Collaborative platforms - productivity, critical thinking, and
synthesis are all increased when things are done in a
collaborative effort (Mattessich, Murray-Close, and Monsey
2001). Social media provides a way for learners to be able to
easily connect with each other and work collaboratively
(Agosto, Copeland, and Zach 2012).
III. Twitter

Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to share short

messages, known as tweets, which can include text, videos, photos or
links. To use Twitter, an internet connection or a smartphone with the
Twitter app or website is required.Twitter is a form of microblogging,
which combines the features of traditional blogging and instant
messaging. Twitter is popular for many reasons, including its ability to
provide real-time updates and promotions from brands, facilitate
communication with friends, and enable users to follow and engage with
business leaders, politicians, and celebrities. Additionally, it is a valuable
tool for staying up-to-date on news and events. (Hetler 2022).

Twitter is an effective communication tool because of its easy

accessibility, constant updates, and real-time format. It is utilized by
students, teachers, and other groups to exchange information,
communicate with each other, and share knowledge about topics of
interest. Twitter has the potential to improve students' learning abilities
and increase their motivation and involvement in non-traditional teaching
methods. (Malik, Aqdas, and Aditya 2019).

Twitter has become an essential part of our social lives. Twitter

allows people to connect with others from all over the world, regardless of
distance, and to form communities based on shared interests and values.
Twitter has the ability to find like-minded people who share your passions
and hobbies. With the help of hashtags and other search tools, you can
easily discover others who share your interests and connect with them.
This not only allows you to expand your social circle but also to learn and
grow as an individual by engaging with different perspectives and ideas.
(Edwards, 2022)
Moreover, Twitter is a feasible avenue for investigating mental
health-related phenomena that can provide mental health discussions
(Berry et al., 2017). In a study conducted by Berry et al., they analyzed
tweets from the hashtag #WhyWeTweetMH on Twitter to understand why
people discuss mental health on the platform. They were able to identify
four main themes and 11 subthemes that explained the reasons, including
(1) a sense of community, (2) raising awareness and combating stigma,
(3) a safe space for expression, and (4) coping and empowerment. Some
users revealed using Twitter as a coping mechanism with mental health
issues, allowing them to escape daily challenges, reflect on their
experiences, and feel empowered, indicating that social media tools could
be used as part of psychological interventions. Because of this, Twitter's
mental health community is valued for its ability to offer help because of
users' common understanding, which facilitates communication and
mutual support.

In addition, Twitter, as a social media platform, offers a unique data

source to examine stigmatized topics such as mental health, due to its
billions of users who tend to tweet emotional updates from daily life
(Lachmar et al., 2017). Another study by Lachmar et al. analyzed tweets
with the hashtag #MyDepressionLooksLike on Twitter to understand how
people talk about their symptoms of depression. They identified seven
themes including dysfunctional thoughts, social struggles, and suicidal
thoughts and behaviors, using qualitative content analysis on 1978
tweets. This could support how through sharing mental health
experiences online, Twitter users are using social media to find relief from
symptoms of mental health problems.
CHAPTER III

This chapter encompasses the data collection method that the

researchers are utilizing to obtain the needed information from the chosen
sample. Also in this chapter are the descriptions of the samples, the
sampling technique they chose to use in picking the right respondents for
the study, and the setting of the study. After all that, the researchers
discussed the method used to analyze the data to properly establish the
results acquired from the respondents.

Research Design

This study aims to understand the perceived experiences of Senior

High School students from Las Piñas City National Science High School
who use Twitter as a coping mechanism. Therefore the researchers
utilized a descriptive research design to explain the effectiveness of
Twitter as a coping mechanism for senior high school students.
Additionally, this method is used to find out the different ways on how
SHS students effectively use Twitter as a coping mechanism. With this,
the researchers will be able to achieve the purpose of their study.

Sample and Sampling Technique

The researchers will use purposive sampling for the study. The
chosen form of sampling technique seeks to identify the respondents who
meet the criteria necessary for the study's objective.
The Respondents

This study included 30 respondents. These respondents are from the

senior high school department of Las Pinas City National Science High
School S.Y. 2022-2023. The 30 respondents are all active Twitter users
and were chosen through a purposive sampling method. The researchers
contacted the chosen respondents and made them answer survey
questions.

Research Instrument

The researchers will utilize a survey as their means for data

collection. The researchers will create a Google Form as the platform for
the survey, including questions that are relevant to the study.
Furthermore, the researcher will administer the survey to students in
Grades 11 and 12 of Las Piñas City National Science High School who are
currently utilizing Twitter. The purpose of the study is to gather their
perspectives and opinions on how the app has aided the respondents as a
coping mechanism. The survey will take place from May 30 to June 1,
2023, allowing respondents three days to complete it and submit their
input, ensuring sufficient time for their responses.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Las Piñas City National Science High
School (LPCNSHS), a specialized public science high school situated in the
City of Las Piñas. It specifically targeted the Senior High School students
from School Year 2022-2023.

To ensure convenience for both the researchers and participants, the

research instrument was administered online utilizing survey
questionnaires, allowing the study respondents to be surveyed in their
homes or other locations of their choice. The study is scheduled to take
place during the second semester of the academic year 2022-2023.

Data Gathering

The researchers conducted the study at Las Piñas City National

Science High School. First, they constructed survey questionnaires
consisting of open and close ended questions. Second, they wrote consent
forms to be granted the permission to conduct a survey in the school.
Third, they encoded the survey questions into Google Forms, an online
accessible platform, for the purpose of convenience and efficiency. Fourth,
in order to acquire respondents, the researchers made us of purposive
sampling – utilized in order to have twitter-user respondents. Fifth, the
researchers sent a formal message to the respondents and provided them
with the link to the Google Form containing the survey questionnaire.

Data Analysis

The researchers will be using the responses from the survey

conducted via Google Forms. The researchers will synthesize an analysis
about the experiences of Senior High School students from Las Piñas City
National Science High School, in using twitter as one of their primary
coping mechanisms. The will be using content analysis as their main data
analysis technique. The survey results shall be classified according to the
different directions of the respondents (negative, positive, neutral). This
shall be based upon key terms in the responses in the open ended
questions in the survey. These terms will then be assigned different codes
and then categorized according to the aforementioned directions. The
final analysis will be presented in table form wherein the main categories
are presented.
CHAPTER IV

This chapter summarizes the findings from the analysis and

interpretation of the data gathered from the responses to the survey
questionnaires. The data provided were organized in a tabular format,
aligning with the specific questions outlined in the problem statement.

Results and Discussion:

The data presented in this chapter provides valuable insights into the
respondents' characteristics, their frequency of Twitter usage, their
perception of Twitter as a coping mechanism, and the impact of Twitter
on their lives. This chapter’s main purpose is to discuss the key findings
and their implications.

The researchers’ first key finding is that Twitter is an effective coping

mechanism. This statement is supported by the substantial number of
respondents (40%) stating that they are more inclined to use Twitter as a
coping mechanism following a stressful event. This indicates that Twitter
serves as a means of seeking comfort and emotional support for these
individuals. Furthermore, the majority of respondents (63.3%)
recommend Twitter as a coping mechanism for stress relief to other
senior high school students, emphasizing its potential benefits in
managing stress.
The majority of respondents (76.7%) reported that Twitter is one of
their top 5 coping strategies, indicating that they rely on Twitter to
manage stress.

Regarding the frequency of Twitter usage, a significant proportion

(43.3%) indicated that they use Twitter very often (rating of 4 on a scale
of 1-5), followed by 33.3% who use it often (rating of 5). This suggests
that Twitter is a popular platform among the respondents.

The data indicates that the majority of respondents (90%) believe

that Twitter helps them cope with stress. This finding suggests that
Twitter is perceived as an effective tool for managing stressors and
providing emotional relief. It is important to note that a small proportion
of respondents (6.67%) expressed the view that Twitter does not assist in
coping with stress. Further exploration of their reasoning would provide
valuable insights into the limitations and drawbacks of using Twitter as a
coping mechanism.

Moreover, it is also important to note that the respondents reported

various reasons for using Twitter, including academics (29.73%), personal
concerns (32.43%), emotional expression (18.92%), and information
sharing (13.52%). These findings highlight the multifaceted role of
Twitter in addressing different situations and challenges. The impact of
Twitter on users' lives encompasses emotional expression (27.66%),
relieving stress and boredom (19.15%), and access to information
(14.89%). This suggests that Twitter plays a significant role in facilitating
emotional release, providing entertainment, and serving as a source of
information for the respondents.

A minority of respondents (10.64%) reported negative impacts

associated with using Twitter. Further exploration of these negative
effects could shed light on potential risks or drawbacks of Twitter usage
for stress relief.

Twitter usage.
CHAPTER V

This chapter is composed of a conclusion which is the answer to the

research questions. In addition, a recommendation for research studies
following this one is also present. There are also the documents of the
whole research process at the end.

Conclusion

The data presented in this chapter provides valuable insights into the
frequency of Twitter usage of the respondents, their perception of Twitter
as a coping mechanism, and the impact of Twitter on their lives. When it
comes to the frequency of usage, Twitter is found to be a popular
platform among the respondents, with a significant proportion reporting
frequent usage, indicating its importance in their lives. As a coping
mechanism tool, Twitter is identified as one of the top coping strategies
for a majority of respondents, particularly following stressful events. It
serves as a means of seeking solace, emotional support, and stress relief.
It is also found that the vast majority of respondents believe that Twitter
helps them cope with stress effectively, highlighting its perceived benefits
as a tool for managing stressors and providing emotional relief. The
respondents reported diverse reasons for using Twitter, including
academic purposes, personal concerns, emotional expression, and
information sharing. Twitter has a positive impact on users' lives by
facilitating emotional expression, relieving stress and boredom, and
providing access to information. While the majority of respondents
reported positive experiences with Twitter, a minority acknowledged
negative impacts associated with its usage. Further exploration of these
negative effects would be valuable to understand potential risks or
drawbacks.

Overall, the findings suggest that Twitter is a popular and effective

coping mechanism for senior high school students, enabling them to
manage stress, express emotions, access information, and build
connections. However, it is important to consider the limitations and
potential negative impacts associated with Twitter usage.

Recommendations

The research discusses the experiences of senior high school

students in utilizing twitter as one of their main forms of coping
mechanisms. Despite the completion of the study, the researchers would
like to make the following recommendations.

Future researchers may wish to make their research more extensive

by expanding the scope of the study. The target respondents may not
only be limited to senior high school students of Las Pinas City National
Science High School. Future studies may include other schools and other
students from different levels of education. The study may also have a
sample size greater than 30 to allow for a wider variety and selection of
respondents.

Future researchers may also conduct a different approach to the

study. They may create separate data analyses for male and female
respondents. Doing this might discover the difference in experiences
between the two genders in using the social media platform.

Moreover, eventual studies may not only focus on the good

experiences but also the negative impacts of using Twitter as a coping
mechanism for students.
