Topic: Fix Truck
Focus Area: Product area
Inquiry Question: How can I fix and rebuild my truck to a road legal state.

1) Capstone Project Summary:

In the box below, please type out 200 – 300 words explanation of what you are planning to do with
your Capstone Project. It should be as specific as possible, detailing what you hope to accomplish.

With my capstone I will fix and bring my truck to a road legal and presentable state. The truck I will be
fixing is a family vehicle that once belonged to my past away grandpa and has been passed on to me to
fix. The truck is a modified 1972 GMC 3500 dump truck that has been parked in the elements for over
15 years. The truck was running when parked and since then has decayed to an inoperable not running
state. With my capstone my number one goal is to get it to a drivable state. After it reaches a drivable
state, I will improve the cosmetic state as well as fixing the hydraulic systems of the dump bed. To get
it to a run I will need to rebuild or buy a new carburetor as well as fixing the electrical systems, the
engine bay itself is also very dirty as critters took refuge in the carburetor and engine bay, the interior
is in an alright state but none of the windows crank and the floor under the passenger and driver side
have rusted out. To fix rust issues I will incorporate my metal working skills into the project. Overall,
my capstone will encapsulate all the skills I've learned throughout my high school experience as well as
expanding my knowledge and proving my skills.
Good description of your planned project. It sounds like a worthwhile project, but challenging and
possibly very expensive. You’d mentioned your grandfather could help mentor you...if so, that is an
incredible opportunity to learn from him.

2) Core Competencies:
In the boxes below, explain how your project will demonstrate your abilities and skills from each
section of the Core Competencies. (You must choose at least two points from each skill area of the
core competencies. All the core competencies are attached in the assignment.)
Good start, Tyson, however you will need to connect your Final project to at least 2 core competencies
when you do your FINAL CAPSTONE PROPOSAL.
Core Competency (skill area): How you demonstrate it in your Capstone Project:
Personal Awareness & I will need to set goals and set expectations for myself in steps so don’t
Responsibility become overwhelmed and remain on task, I will need to self-regulate
myself to avoid procrastinating.
Social Responsibility My project involves fixing a truck that would otherwise rot away and
using it for various community projects, I will need to build relationships
with mentors who can guide me
Critical Thinking I will need the to critically think and analyze my truck and decide what to
do and how to do it. I will need to ask Quilty questions to guide me in
working on my truck
Creative Thinking I will need to use my creative thinking to fabricate and fix things well
saving money this will involve recycling old parts to further my project, i
will also need to develop my ideas to actionable plans with reasonable
timelines.
Communication I will need to collaborate with others to get answers to questions and
guide me in fixing my truck, I will also need to reflect and explain what
I've done and how i did it and share what I've done with others.
Personal & Cultural Identity One of my personal values is not being wasteful and reusing old things, I
also value physical objects and believe one my strengths is my ability to
generate ideas and remain organized and on task.

3) Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question.

Explain WHY you are choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

Im passionate for working on my truck and mechanics in general because it has many real word applications
and is a great skill to have in life, it also is very satisfying to fix something that is broken to me; the truck im
working on for my capstone also has great sentimental value to me.

4 ) Background: What background knowledge / connections / prior learning do you have that can help
you to be successful with your project?

My project will need a decent understanding of mechanics as well as metal work to be completed,
althought my knowledge of both skills is limited i hope to develop them with this project, my prior
knowledge includeds taking several mechanics cources in high school as well as taking metal work
courses. I have connections to an expiernced welder as well as connections with several mechanics and
other adults who can help me.

5) Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does
this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals? What are you hoping to gain from
completing this project (other than graduating or passing CLC 12)?

At this point in time im unsure of what i want my post secondary career to be be but am looking for
something that involves physical work such as a paramedic or framer i am also considering mechanical or
a metal work career and hope this project will expand my knowledge and hope it guides me to a career.
With this project i hope to keep the truck after its fixed and use it for other projects or use it for work.

6) Capstone presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present your
project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You may use a
combination of mediums.

Im considering presenting my capstone through power point or through physically showing off the truck at
school, it is highly likely i present my capstone through powerpoint as it is the best medium to show off my
learning.
