The Effects of Volcanic Eruptions on the Earth’s Surface

Benefits of Volcanic Eruptions

1. Agricultural Benefits.
The burning lava can turn into one of the richest or most fertile soil in the
world. Cultivation of this weathered volcanic materials produce abundant
food.

2. Industrial Benefits.
Volcanoes contain very rich amounts of minerals such as gold, silver
and copper. Precious gems, minerals and building materials are making
available by volcanic eruptions. Stones like pumice volcanic ash and
perlite (volcanic glass) are all mined for various commercial uses.

3. Economic and recreational benefits.

Volcanoes can promote tourism. Tourist preferred volcanic areas either
for recreational purposes like sightseeing, hiking, climbing, camping or
for extreme activities like mountaineering, volcano boarding and others.

Dangers of Volcanic Eruptions

1. Effects of Volcanic Ashes. Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrous Oxides and hydrochloric

fumes can lead to acid precipitation and respiratory diseases.

2. Effects of lava and pyroclastic flow. It destroys everything in its path.

Massive debris flow can bury everything in its path.

3. Greenhouse effect
Erupting volcanoes emit mixture of gases like ash and sulphur dioxide that
reflect sunlight away from earth that cause warming on the earth’s
atmosphere.
Example Mount Pinatubo, Zambales

Activity

Write TRUE if the statement describes changes on the earth’s surface as a result of volcanic eruption and
FALSE if not.

________________ 1. An erupted volcano can attract tourists for recreational activities or for extreme

activities.

________________ 2. Flowing lava can change earth’s surface by covering and burying crops and building

along its path.

________________ 3. An acid rain is corrosive and dangerous for plants, infrastructures and living things.

________________ 4. A volcanic eruption can never have a good effect to the earth’s surface.

________________ 5. Earth’s landscape is permanent and cannot be changed by any calamity especially

volcanic eruption.
