Sampling techniques

Simple random
sampling
Type of probability in which the
researcher randomly selects a
subset of participants from a
population. Each member of the
population has the same chance
of being chosen. Data is then
collected from as large a
percentage as possible of this
random subset. (Hayes, 2022)
By convenience
Non-probability sampling
method where units are selected
for inclusion in the sample
because they are the easiest for
the researcher to access.

Researchers can subjectively

select individuals who are happy
to become part of the research.
(Nikolopoulou, 2022)
Systematic
Probability method where the
researcher chooses elements from a
target population by selecting a
random starting point and selects
sample members after a fixed
‘sampling interval.

This helps to minimize predisposed

samples and poor survey results.
(Lauren, 2020)
Quota
Researcher selects a sample group to represent
some specific characteristics of the population.

The main reason why researchers choose

quota samples is that it allows the researchers
to sample a subgroup that is of great interest
to the study. (Simkus, 2022)
Stratified
The researcher divides the entire population
into different subgroups or strata, then
randomly selects the final subjects
proportionally from different groups.

They divide the groups based on shared

characteristics of the members. (Hayes,
2022)
Snowball Sampling
Research participants recruit other
participants for a test or study. It is
used where potential participants are
hard to find. It’s called snowball
sampling because (in theory) once you
have the ball rolling, it picks up more
“snow” along the way and becomes
bigger & bigger. (Simkus, 2022)
Bias in the sampling
Occurs when some members of a
population are systematically more
likely to be selected in a sample than
others.

Samples that are collected to

determine its distribution are
selected incorrectly & do not
represent the real distribution
because of non-random reasons.
