The camera tube shipment includes the tube, the basic unit, the adjusted coil system, the
lens and a temperature sensor.
When replacing a picture tube in a VIDEOMED SX, the following procedure must be
observed:
Beginning approx. April 2000, only the VIDEOMED S will be shipped. In a spare part situ-
ation (SX picture tube), an S picture tube will be shipped! In this situation, the target voltage
should be changed as follows prior to the adjustment:
• VIDEOMED SX, Up = 50 V Sqare Part No.: 37 94 315
Designation XQ 8705 RX - can be read from the test certificate, top left.
• VIDEOMED S, Up = 75 V Spare Part No.: 37 94 307
Designation XQ 8705 RA - can be read from the test certificate, top left.
• With POLYSTAR systems, Serial Nos. > 4000, a Vid S television system with the
Vid SX configuration is used.
• Check centering of the TV camera in relation to the I.I. output. The horizontal and verti-
cal image position can be set by means of two self-locking nuts, (Fig. 5 / p. 15).
The nuts are secured using red varnish. When turning the nuts, please ensure that no
varnish particles fall into the light distributor.
Image position is optimally adjusted at the factory in the basic position of the unit.
• With the POLYSTAR in the I.I. overtable and 0 position with a preliminary tension of 0.5
clockwise on the monitor.
• With the SIRESKOP, the drift is averaged out at the factory at +25°.
• With SIREGRAPH in 0° position.
• With ICONOS in 0 position.
NOTE Carry out the correction only if rotation can be detected in the
same direction, over the entire tilt/OT-UT range and if the cus-
tomer requests a correction.
To adjust to the unit geometry and to compensate for the effects of the earth’s magnetic
field, it is possible to rotate the image. To do this, the camera is mechanically rotated.
The difference can only be averaged out between the different unit positions.
By averaging this out, the image reverse function is negatively affected.
Procedure
• The grid lines of the test pattern should be as parallel as possible to the collimator
plates in all working positions. If this is not the case, image rotation must be averaged
out using mechanical camera rotation.
• Switch off the radiographic system and remove the camera housing.
• Make a mark between the bottom ring and the camera mount.
• Loosen the camera head by loosening the three set screws (1/Fig. 7 / p. 17) and switch
on the radiographic system.
X • Start the service program as described above and make the adjustment. Trigger fluo-
roscopy. Close the side plates of the rectangular collimator. When there is sufficient
image contrast, stop fluoro regulation (AGC stop).
• For systems without a reference attachment, place sheet of film over the Live monitor
(to make the mark).
• Mechanically turn the camera (clockwise) until the grid lines of the test pattern are as
parallel as possible to the collimator plates in all working positions (I.I. OT/UT and
± 90°).
• Secure the camera head with at least one of the set screws.
Fig. 7:
NOTE When the set screws are loosened, the camera can fall out of
the camera mount. There may not be a gap between the cam-
era mount and the camera (2/Fig. 7 / p. 17).
• Switch off the radiographic system, tighten the set screws (1/Fig. 7 / p. 17).
X • Recheck image rotation in all working positions and if there are differences, repeat the
procedure if required.
• Reinstall the camera housing.
Memory-resident programs that are active in the background (e.g. screen savers, virus
scanners....) influence the real-time behavior of the PC. Communication between the PC
and XCU is time-out monitored. If these programs prevent the PC from responding
promptly to the alive message, it will lead to a switch-off of the Service PC, which means
that the XCU will assure that the Service PC has been switched off and will not accept any
further communication from it.
Recommendation: While the XCS service application is running, programs active in the
background such as screen savers, virus scanners, mail and network utilities may not be
loaded.
In addition, there are certainly problems when the SPEAKER.DRV driver to control the
internal PC loudspeaker is loaded. There are two reasons for this: on the one hand, the
Speaker.drv blocks all interrupts when playing sounds, even the one that supports commu-
nication to the XCU. Thus, communication is blocked when what are called system sounds
are activated, i.e., sounds which are played if the wrong key is pressed or if a question box
appears. On the other hand, the service software sends out BEEPs for some potentiome-
ters (e.g. dose adjustment) when the correct adjustment is reached to inform the technician
of this success if he should happen to be away from the Service PC and not in visual con-
tact with it. However, if the Speaker.drv supports the interface to the loudspeaker, the nor-
mal beep is subject to even more difficulties, i.e., it will come after a long delay. Here too it
can lead to an interrupt of the communication.
Recommendation: Deactivate the SPEAKER.DRV driver in the system controller under
DRIVERS.
The latest information regarding the XCS service software can be viewed in the XCS Help
function.
• Select the "XCS Help" icon
Fig. 8:
XCS Help entrance menu:
Select "Diverses/Miscellaneous", "Bek. Probleme/Known problems". The Help text dis-
played provides information about known problems and is expanded in every XCS-SSW.
Installation 0
The diskettes with the valid XCS service software are included in the corresponding system
file or Techn. Documents System Reg.9. If this software version has not yet been installed
on the hard disk of your Service PC, install the software as follows:
• Start WINDOWS on the Service PC.
• If another version of the XCS service software has already been loaded on your PC,
delete this version or rename it first. Under SSW, delete or rename the directory
XCS_SERV together with all subdirectories and files entered.
• Insert diskette 1 of the XCS service software into the floppy drive.
Start the installation program (a:\install).
• Connect the Service PC to the XCU D320.X5 subassembly with the interface cable.
• The service program is started by double-clicking on the XCS symbol (Fig. 9 / p. 19)
Component Service 0
• Under "Components" you can access to the generator, unit, Videomed and
Fluorospot TOP service software.
General Remarks
Because of the different fluoro, exposure and scan modes, a series of iris adjustments are
necessary. An separate software module has been designed to make these adjustments
more efficient. This module does not replace the iris basic adjustment in the generator ser-
vice software.
Prerequisites
• The PDA adjustment must be completed.
• The iris basic adjustment must be completed in the generator service software.
• The Videomed S/SX must be configured and adjusted.
Starting the Iris Software Module
• Connect the SPC to the XCU and start the XCS service.
• Before starting the iris module, select the Patient List in the FL-TOP and select the DFR
system.
• In the "XCS MAIN Program" start the <Adjustment> module under <Iris Correc-
tion>.
IQ Tests 0
• All tests can be selected via "Radio Buttons". Tests which are displayed "dimmed" will
be implemented only in the next version or the option is not available.
• It is possible to select several test steps per test. These are listed in the list box.
• If a certain test sequence is necessary, a message window with the description of the
action is displayed. If another test sequence is requested in some instructions, this has
priority.
The description of an action must always be acknowledged with "O.K." before execut-
ing a test.
• The tests are selected with Start of Test. The IQAP program is terminated with Exit.
• If triggering of an aquisition or fluoro is requested, the following window is displayed.
It must be noted that, depending on the test steps, either fluoro or exposure must be
triggered. In both cases the same window is displayed. The test is not performed by
pressing Cancel and after an acquisition the FL-TOP test results are not transferred to
the SPC.
For acquisitions, at least 4 images are required (number of required images depending
on the test selected).
Approx. 5 sec. for Fluoro.
• After performing the test steps, if needed, the ROI’s must be set at the FL-TOP. An
appropriate prompt is displayed on the FL-TOP. The ROI’s can be positioned using the
mouse. A test evaluation is automatically initiated.
• The images for a test can be copied into the “Siemens Service Transfer” folder for the
export function (see Export). The folder is created with the first "Export" in the IQAP pro-
gram.
• The test result is transferred to the SPC with the "End of Test" function. The menu
selection key is located on the “Additional Functions” page.
The upper window shows the value calculated for the previously completed test.
In the lower window, the measuring values that were determined using the oscillo-
scope or the Mavo monitor can be manually entered. In addition, any desired text can
be inserted as a remark.
All data and remarks displayed in the widow can be written into the file "Iqap.end"/...
with "OK".
NOTE The "Iqap_end" file is created only once, the first time the
program is started. Afterwards, other entries are added to the
end of the file. If the file is no longer present, a new one is cre-
ated automatically.
The file can be read with any text editor. Path: C:
Iqap_dat\Ser. No. of system
factory.txt The file created at the end of the IQAP that is saved as the factory data
in the XCU. Can only be read by the service technician.
iq_end.bak A backup copy, incl. the comments from the last test. This file is gener-
ated only when logging in the second time.
iq_end.txt This is where the currently stored results are located.
iq_start.txt This is where the results that were saved last are located in the XCU.
The measuring values are cancelled with “Cancel”. The test can be restarted.

Depending on the TV camera picture tube, the automatic centering current adjustment
does not always provide optimum results. The centering currents for the TV camera picture
tube are checked, and if needed, are adjusted with the "Lag Measurement".
Carry out a "Lag Measurement" under the following conditions:
1. After a replacement of the "TV camera picture tube" and subsequent "Auto Adjust-
ment" with all options selected.
2. After an "Auto Adjustment" with "Centering Currents" selected.
With introduction of the TV camera picture tube, the adjustment of the centering current
was carried out an documented at the factory. The protocol is in the System- or techn.
documents system reg. 9 binder, "Centering Currents for Picture Tube". The values can
be found in the protocol and must be entered under <Adjustment>, <Tube>. When this
is done, a "Lag Measurement" is not necessary.

• Examine all images from the "Siemens Service Transfer Folder" for image distur-
bances and artifacts. For an evaluation/description of the disturbances, see below.
P • Enter the results in the IQ Test Protocol, "Image Disturbances and Artifacts".
Description of Disturbances 0
Pixel Errors
are image pixels containing no image information. They are visible as black, pixel-size dots
in the basic image. In the DSA image they can occur as black or white dots, depending on
whether the failure is in the mask or in the fill image.
The causes are memory failures or addressing errors which occur in the RAM or in the
mass storage device (Post Processing).
Tolerable pixel dropouts are sporadic, not limited to one location, always only one pixel at
one location, maximum of three pixels/image and no more often than every 20th image.
Ghost Image
are object shapes which are usually offset to one side, and appear double. They are gen-
erally caused by reflection in poorly adapted, long video cables.
Clearly visible ghost images are not tolerable.
Contouring
are horizontal or vertical "stripes“ which do not mimic existing linear structures. They can
best be detected on a sawtooth signal-generated image by continuously changing the win-
dowing. Light contouring during the above-described test is tolerable.
Horizontal Jitter
Vertical object edges do not appear on the monitor as "sharply" defined limits, but as lightly
jagged, "frayed" lines. Jitter occurs from slight irregularities in the horizontal deflection from
image line to image line, or during image storage and to a certain extent are unavoidable.
In the DSA image, they lead to slight, tolerable registration errors. For the check, tape a
soldering wire cross on the center of the I.I., as vertical and horizontal as possible and
make a DR exposure using dose step 100 and a single image with the smallest I.I. format.
Image evaluation criteria: narrow windowing with high contrast.
Island Formation
We speak of island formation when visibly defined shapes appear in parts of the image
which have an even gray value and are generally noise-free. They often occur due to insuf-
ficient memory depth, etc. and accordingly contain incorrect image information. What are
called "burnt out" image locations are also part of this phenomenon. They are tolerable only
to a very limited degree.
Vignetting
is always present as a decline in brightness from the center of the image to the edge of the
image; it is caused by the heel effect of radiation, by deformation of the I.I. input screen, by
the electron optics in the I.I., by the tandem optics between the I.I. and the TV camera, by
the TV camera tube and by the monitor picture tube. It is considered to be an image distur-
bance only when it occurs very large or strongly asymmetrically, or when stronger bright-
ness differences are present and are distributed in an irregular pattern over the screen.
Exposure-related Artifacts
occur only with DSA images and are caused by exposure deviations from image to image
during the DSA scene. If two completely similar images (mask and fill image) are sub-
tracted from each other, an evenly bright, completely structureless image results in which
only noise is visible. If exposure changes between the mask and the fill image, because of
the difference in exposure, an inferred image structure is created even with an object which
has not changed. It is acceptable only when the inferred image is slight, because with med-
ical exposures, a similar effect can occur when there is patient movement.
Logarithming Error
The non-linear attenuation of radiation as a function of the object density or object thick-
ness can be largely linearized by a logarithming of the signal values of the image. Incorrect
adjustment of the logarithm step results in a brightness jump in the display of the vessel
simulation of the DSA test phantom. With the DSA norm test phantom per DIN 6868, Part
8, the transition from the most dense step (1.4 mm Cu) to the smallest step (0.2 mm Cu) is
used for this evaluation. With the Dynamics test with the iodine capillary test, the gray value
of the iodine capillaries in Fields 2L, 1 and 5 R should be evaluated. Slight differences in
brightness in the vessel simulation over the various thickness of Cu steps are acceptable.
Registration Errors
occur only in DSA images. If the coordinates of corresponding projection elements of
image and mask do not match, artifacts occur in structured objects which are referred to
as registration errors. In the tests, only registration errors which are not caused by object
movements are taken into consideration.
Image patterns which occur from a light shift in position of the DSA test phantom when
moving the vessel simulation are scarcely avoidable; however they are the same in all DSA
images in a series.
The reasons for objectionable registration errors are slight irregularities in the horizontal
and vertical deflection of the TV system or errors in the storage of the image pixels.
Slight registration errors are tolerable, because they do not hinder the ability to evaluate
medical exposures.
For the check, make DSA test scenes at dose step 200 6 f/s and dose step 500 1 f/s, with
the soldering wire cross (see check for horizontal jitter) and evaluate the entire series in
each instance. When doing this, place the mask on an image in which the dose control has
surely been concluded.
Inhomogeneousness
(Hum, line errors): a certain amount of inhomogeneousness can be found in every image
(among others, see also vignetting); up to a certain degree it does not adversely affect the
ability to evaluate medical exposures.
Inhomogeneousness which is caused by electro-magnetic scatter in the image generating
system is unattractive and bothersome, and depending on the type of disturbance, can sig-
nificantly affect the ability to evaluate the images and ideally should not occur at all. They
are tolerable only to a very slight degree. Hum disturbances are visible as periodic, hori-
zontal light-dark lines or as light or dark diagonal lines in the image; they are temporary and
not limited to one location.
The dropout or partial dropout of lines is recognizable as dark diagonal lines in the TV
image.
Microphony
is caused by mechanical vibrations (rotating anode movement, etc.) which are transferred
to the TV camera and which influence the electron beam and usually appear as very reg-
ular disturbance patterns similar to electro-magnetic hum disturbances in the TV image.
Microphony is scarcely tolerable.
Disturbance Stripes
Enter all disturbance stripes here which were not described in the previous paragraphs and
whose cause is not clear. Disturbance stripes which are caused by dirt on optically active
surfaces should also be entered here. they are limited to one location and are not tempo-
rary. Disturbance strips are, as already mentioned, scarcely tolerable.
