1 SCOPE
This document describes the Control Philosophy for the HRT Ø99m Thickener; Tag
2610-TH-004 developed for BHP - Spence Growth Option (SGO) Project; which shall
process Copper Tailings.
Project ID: Plant Code: Plant Unit Code: Document Type: Running No: Revision: Sheet of Sheets:
2 OBJECTIVE
The main objective of a tailings thickener is to recover water from the tailings slurry
and to provide thickened tailings for deposition to tailings storage. Once the tailing is
in the Thickener, flocculant is added to the slurry in order of settling the solids and
achieving the separation of water particles and in this way, they are settled down by
gravity at the bottom of the thickener. The surface of the settled pulp bed forms a
well-defined interface, which has a layer of cleared liquid above it; this liquid is
recovered by overflow and generally is stored in a recovery tank for its later use in
other processes.

The Thickener mechanism can be started or stopped by the button pads and
selectors located in the frontal part of the local panel. Local panel displays all the
mechanical alarms as also the main process signals, such as the Torque, bed
interface level and the thickener bed mass (pressure).
4.2 FEEDWELL
The incoming pulp tangentially enters in the Feedwell producing mixing of the slurry,
dilution water and the flocculant, the Feedwell is designed in such way for producing
an optimal dilution which maximizes the solids sedimentation and water release.

4.2.1 TURBODIL
Outotec Vane Feedwell can be equipped with one or more Turbodil®, which is a
forced dilution system which allows more flexibility and control over a great variation
in the feeding volume and the solid content conditions. For the particular case of the
2610-TH-004 thickener, inclusion of a (1) turbodil is considered.
The raking system includes a Hydraulic Power Pack connected to six (6) hydraulic
motors directly assembled in six (6) planetary gearboxes. These gearboxes actuate
a common ring gear, which supports the shaft of the thickener rakes.
The hydraulic unit is mounted at the central zone of the thickener bridge next to the
drive.
The Drive Unit includes three (3) lifting cylinders (Rake Lifting System) allowing a
maximum lifting of 600 mm.
The torque is directly measured by a pressure transducer 2610-OT-06401 installed
on the Hydraulic Power Pack together with the high torque switch 2610-OSH-06414
(95% of the Maximum Operating Torque (MOT) of 11.500.000 Nm). While the lifting
position of the rake is measured with the 2610-ZT-06400 position sensor and the
respective limit switches 2610-ZSH-06413 (upper position); 2610-ZSL-06413 (lower
position) mounted in the centre column of the thickener.
The selection of the mode Local or Remote only can be selected in the Client
DCS.
Project ID: Plant Code: Plant Unit Code: Document Type: Running No: Revision: Sheet of Sheets:
In "Remote" mode, the control and monitoring are performed from the Client
DCS, using Ethernet IP communication. There are two options in Remote
mode: Remote/Auto and Remote/Manual to be explained later on.
In the “Local” mode, the drive commands of the rakes consider a JOG
Selector, which have to maintain activated in the position of the selected
direction, and when this JOG Selector is de-activated will come back to the
neutral position, this with the objective to always have a neutral condition in
the thickener when the “Remote” mode is activated and avoid operational
issues. The command of Lifting/lowering rakes is by a selector 2610-HS-
06412 and the change of direction clockwise/counter clockwise by a selector
2610-HS-06411; when some of these selectors is activated will be activated
the corresponding solenoid valves in the Hydraulic power pack in order to get
the desired movements.
The "Manual" mode means that the lifting system control logic in function of
the torque is disabled, only acting by commands from the console in the local
control panel or Client DCS, to lift/lower the rakes, as Local or Remote mode
respectively.
As summary:
- Remote/Auto (Normal Operation): Lifting/lowering movements are
commanded according the control logic installed in the PLC and DCS is
able to switch to local/remote mode.
- Remote/Manual: Lifting control logic of PLC is disabled; DCS controls
Lifting/lowering movements and also is able to switch to local/remote
mode. In this mode, movements cannot be commanded by control panel,
but it can be stopped by the emergency stop button 2610-HS-06410D.
- Local/Manual mode: Lifting control logic is disabled; Lifting/lowering rake
commands are available from local control panel only.
- Local/Autol: Doesn’t exist
torque. This signal is fed to the PLC where it is used to trip the high torque
alarm 2610-OAH-06414 on the panel door display and also fed to DCS to stop
the electric motor via a contactor in the MCC.
The oil reservoir low level switch on the hydraulic power unit (2610-LSL-
06405), once activated sends a signal to the PLC and turn on the alarm 2610-
LAL-06405. Also, the instrument has a low low-level switch (2610-LSLL-
06405) that once activated, the PLC sends a signal to DCS to cut the power
of the electric motor and trips the low-low oil level alarm 2610-LALL-06405.
A mechanical protection against the torque is set in the hydraulic axial piston
pump, when torque reaches 100% of MOT (11.500.000 Nm) the pump
compensator goes to 0° and de-strokes the pistons, it means no oil pumped
to hydraulic motors, so the rakes stops.
Another mechanical protection against the high torque shall be the use of a
pressure relief valve manually adjusted to 12.075.000 Nm (105% of MOT),
which acts as control protection backup, eliminating the possibility of
overloading the drive system. When torque reaches 105% then the relief
valve sends the oil to the reservoir by-passing the hydraulic motors.

5 CONTROL TACTICS
Project ID: Plant Code: Plant Unit Code: Document Type: Running No: Revision: Sheet of Sheets:
The rake is automatically lifted – with speed of 150 mm/minute – by energizing its
respective solenoids (2610-XV-06412 & 2610-VP/ST-06412A/B/C & 2610-XV-
06412A/B/C) when:
The torque (2610-OT-06401) overpasses the 50% of the maximum torque, this is
5.750.000 Nm, and
The torque (2610-OT-06401) is equal or lower than 45% of the maximum torque,
this is 5.175.000 Nm, or
The torque (2610-OT-06401) is lower than 40% of the maximum torque, this is
4.600.000 Nm, and
Automatic sequence for lowering the rake consists in a timer which energizes the
corresponding solenoid valves (2610-XV-06412 & 2610-VP/ST-06412A/B/C & 2610-
XV-06412A/B/C) to lower the rakes for 12 seconds and then de-energizes them for
660 seconds. It means, rakes shall lower in 30 mm steps every 660 seconds.
