includes geophysical survey comprised of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW),
using a Geometrics Geode seismograph acquisition system and a 24 channels land streamer
and 300/800 MHz Dual frequency Ground Penetrating Radar system from GSSI. This report
comprises of the geophysical results of the MASW and GPR Survey performed at the project
site of ICTL in the state of Tamil Nadu. Figure 1.1 below highlights the Multi-channel Analysis
of Surface Waves (MASW) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) locations at the project site
area.
The objective of the geophysical survey was to image the subsurface for identification of weak
zones and void related anomalies over the thirteen bridges of the survey area.
The following geophysical technique was employed to achieve the scope described above.

The geophysical site work was carried out from 03rd November to 04th December 2022 in
presence of ICTL, NHAI along with site visits by Professor from IIT Kharagpur at 13 Locations
along with some extended areas for 9 locations as advised by Professor of IIT Kharagpur.
This report addresses the methodology, 2D Profiles of the MASW and Depth slices for GPR
survey performed at the survey areas.
This investigation involved the use of remote measurement methods and therefore most of
the findings presented here are the result of the measurement and interpretation of seismic
and electromagnetic signals. This report represents the best Fugro opinion of the authors.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the results are accurate and reliable, including
reference to material calibration data from this and other sites. However, as with other indirect
methods there is a possibility of localised inconsistencies and inaccuracies within the results.

The streamer is laid down at the start of a line. A shot is taken at 5 m offset from first geophone.
The energy travels through ground and reaches geophones which is converted into signal by
Geode seismograph. The signal from geode is recorded as data in a laptop. After each shot,
the streamer is moved along the surveyed line by 4 m and the next shot is recorded for the
new position. This procedure is repeated until the end of the line is reached.
During data acquisition filters were not applied to the seismic data to preserve the maximum
bandwidth of the input signal. The analogue signals from each geophone were digitised and
recorded by a Geometrics Geode via multichannel cable. For each shot, the seismograph
recorded vertical ground motion for a period of 1.0 seconds following the source impact.
At each spread location, at-least two stacks were recorded to improve signal to noise ratio.
MASW data were recorded and stored in standard SEG-2 format using sample intervals of
0.5ms. For MASW acquisition, the sampling point for each shot is mid-point of the streamer.
Theoretical aspects of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) technique are presented
in Appendix A.

5 MASW RESULTS
5.1 General
The processed MASW data are presented as series of 2D subsurface models. These sections
are presented in Appendix-B. The 2D profiles highlight the shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution
to a maximum depth of 20 m below the ground level (bgl). The sections are displayed on a
depth scale (m).
It must be noted that seismic velocities are directly related to the elastic properties and
densities of the subsurface strata.
Generally, the 2D profiles of the MASW Lines have been incorporated in Appendix-B.
It is also important to note that MASW technique gives information about the ground
conditions in terms of shear wave velocities at the exact location of the streamer.
7 GPR Results
7.1 General
The processed GPR data are presented as in parts of depth slices. These sections are
presented on Plates in Appendix-B. These profiles highlight the amplitude spectrum to a
maximum depth of 6 m below the ground level (bgl).

The MASW and GPR acquisition has been carried out over the asphalt areas at different bridge
locations. GPR survey provides us the indicative results whereas the qualitative and quantitative
analysis of the anomalous zones have been estimated from the 2D MASW sections. The MASW
2D Sections and the GPR depth slices have shown good correlation throughout the survey
areas. The Shear wave analysis of Surface waves has shown the anomalous regions with low
shear wave velocity (<200m/ Sec). The less compacted ground or the anomalous zones have
shown reflective amplitude in the GPR depth slices. The 2D Velocity models along with GPR
depth slices have been furnished in Appendix-B.
The MASW 2D section have been marked with red colour contours with shear wave velocity
less than or equal to 200 m/sec. The observed anomalous zones for all the bridge locations
and the extended areas have been furnished in Appendix-B. The depth extents and the linear
extents of the anomalous zones have been incorporated in a tabular form in Appendix-C.
The locations with less anomalous zones or without anomalous zone have been marked on the
2D MASW sections which can be considered as the locations with better conditions although
subject to further monitoring and sample testing.
It must be emphasised that geophysical methods can only identify areas yielding results that
are different, i.e. anomalous to the site norm. The interpretation of the results is inevitably
based on assumptions utilizing the best information available on the historic use of the site
and subject to the limitations of the geophysical technique employed.

Typically, about ~67% of the energy from a vertical displacement source will be transmitted as
surface waves. Rayleigh waves are a common type of surface wave and arise from the
interference of compression (P) waves and vertically polarised shear waves (Sv). In a
homogenous medium, Rayleigh wave velocity is constant as a function of frequency. However,
in most geological situations, layering or gradual velocity changes are present near the Earth’s
surface. In these circumstances, because higher frequencies generated by the source travel in
the shallow layers only, whilst lower frequencies travel in both shallow and deep layers, velocity
will vary with frequency. This is known as geometrical dispersion (and should not be confused
with dispersion related to attenuation). MASW data are collected in the time-distance domain
in a similar manner to seismic refraction or reflection data (travel time vs distance along
geophone spread).

Data are then processed by a 2D Fast Fourier Transform to the frequency-wavenumber domain
with appropriate spatial windowing applied to minimise processing artefacts, and by a further
process to the phase velocity–frequency domain.
The relationship between phase velocity and frequency facilitates the discrimination of a
dispersion curve. High frequencies travel within near surface layers whose velocity (in general)
will be lower than the velocity of deeper layers. Higher frequencies, therefore, tend to have a
lower phase velocity than lower frequencies. Higher frequencies Rayleigh waves contain
information from shallow depths whilst lower frequencies contain information from both
shallow and deeper levels. The Rayleigh wave dispersion curve contains the frequency-
dependent and therefore depth-dependent response. Rayleigh wave behaviour is described by
the Rayleigh wave equation given below.
By application of the Rayleigh wave equation we can conclude that phase velocity is always
less than P and S-wave velocity and that the most influential factor on phase velocity of
Rayleigh waves is the S-wave velocity.
Rayleigh waves, assuming a Poisson’s ratio of 0.25, travel at a velocity (Vr) of about 0.92 times
the S-wave velocity for a medium. The ratio of Vr over Vs varies between 0.87 and 0.96 as a
function of Poisson’s ratio. For a typical range of Poisson’s ratio found in most rocks and soils
(0.2 to 0.45) the Vr over Vs ratio varies only between about 0.91 and 0.93.
Data inversion to obtain S-wave velocity from Rayleigh wave data is carried out by inversion
using Kansas Geological Survey SurfSeis 6.0 software. The MASW surface wave method
assumes that significant lateral variation does not occur over distances smaller than the
geophone spread length.

The MASW method is optimally designed with a low frequency geophone in efforts to get
maximum depth. The earth acts as a high frequency filter so the high frequencies attenuate
rapidly. The low frequencies provide the desired depth, but the resolution is compromised. In
general, high frequencies have greater resolution but with limited depth of penetration. Low
frequencies have less resolution but greater depth of penetration. The natural frequency of the
geophone selected was 4.5 Hz, as shown from the Figure A. below, the response of this
geophone is from about 3 Hz to 100 Hz. The graph would illustrate that at 1 octave down (2.25
Hz) 50% of resolution is lost. At 2 octaves down (nearly 1 Hz), the response goes to 0. The
ability to image to depth with MASW data is generally a function of the low-frequency end of
the bandwidth of the surface waves generated. Imaging to depth requires the generation of
low frequencies that can be dependent on-site specific conditions.
The MASW technique is based upon acquisition at small strains (< 10-5) and therefore within
the elastic limit of most materials. Any shear modulus values derived from the MASW
technique, will therefore be at or close to a maximum value (Gmax) consistent with established
stress-strain principles.
Processed MASW data are in the form of 1D shear wave velocity profiles with the assumed
lateral measurement point located at the centre of the receiver array or geophone spread. For
data acquired along survey lines such as at this site 1-D data can be combined into 2-D cross-
sections showing S-wave velocity distribution as a function of depth and horizontal distance.

SurfSeis 4.0 software. The technique assumes therefore a flat ground surface between the shot
and the far receiver. For areas of low relief such as the majority of this site this assumption is
valid, however, in areas of more variable topography a variable elevation profile may invalidate
this assumption. It is likely that any such effects will be most significant at the higher frequency
(shallower) end of the phase velocity-frequency spectrum. Data in areas of variable topography
should therefore be afforded a lower confidence level for any subsequent interpretation.
After conversion to KGS format basic data processing and filtering was applied to the seismic
data including trace kills, bandpass filtering and surgical top and bottom mutes to remove
non-dispersive airwave and body wave energy.
Dispersion curves were digitised from phase velocity – frequency overtone plots. Where clear
dispersive behaviour was not identified a dispersion, curve was not generated.
Only the 'fundamental mode' was considered when using dispersion curve information to
derive shear wave velocities. The fundamental mode is defined as the lowest dispersive,
coherent phase velocity at any particular frequency. In the example provided in Figure A. from
this project site, there is little evidence of multi-modal behaviour however, this may be
identified by the presence of coherent higher phase velocities (relative to the fundamental
mode) at the same frequency. It is important to identify and isolate the fundamental mode
from any such multi-modal behaviour prior to any further analysis.
Note the variation in velocity with frequency (dispersive behaviour) in the fundamental mode;
for example at 5 Hz the phase velocity is approximately 220 ms-1 and at 20 Hz the phase
velocity is approximately 160 ms-1.
An initial starting model was determined in SurfSeis 4.0, based upon the characteristics of the
dispersion curve from each shot. Each starting model comprised 20 layers with variable
thickness automatically generated as a function of the frequency-phase velocity values forming

the input dispersion curve. Starting S-wave velocities were derived from the dispersion data
and used for the initial model based upon the relationship described by the Rayleigh wave
equation.
Based upon the initial model, a series of synthetic dispersion curve profiles were derived by
forward modelling. The software then applied an inversion process that iteratively varied the
initial velocity model to improve the 'fit' between the modelled synthetic dispersion curve and
the observed dispersion curve. The resulting best fit models comprised a 1-D profile of shear
wave velocity as a function of depth for each measurement point along the survey line.
A.3.2 Theory
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an echo sounding method where a transducer (transmitting
antenna/receiving antenna) passed over the structure. GPR uses high frequency electromagnetic
waves (i.e., radar) to acquire subsurface information. The waves are radiated into the subsurface
by an emitting antenna. When the wave hits a buried object or a boundary with different
dielectric constants, receiving antenna records variations in the reflected return signal. Results
can be viewed on-screen and recorded onto disk. Sampling is so rapid that the collected data
effectively produces a continuous cross section, enabling rapid assessment of thickness and
condition over large areas

Measurements are continuously recorded with a resolution that is significantly higher than most
other surface geophysical methods, providing a profile (i.e., cross-section) of subsurface
conditions. For Structural analysis, the working frequency is generally 100 -900 MHz where depth
of range of investigations is constrained on the nature of the soil at the site of investigation.
The depth range of GPR is limited by the electrical conductivity of the ground, and the
transmitting frequency. As conductivity increases, the penetration depth also decreases. This is
because the electromagnetic energy is more quickly dissipated into heat, causing a loss in signal
strength at depth. Higher frequencies do not penetrate as far as lower frequencies but give better
resolution. In moist and /or clay laden soils and soils with high electrical conductivity, penetration
is sometimes only a few centimetres.
A.3.3 Limitations:
The efforts will made to best possible results from the GPR survey, however there are few
limitations of the technique.
The depth range of GPR is limited by the electrical conductivity of the ground, and the
transmitting frequency. As conductivity increases, the penetration depth also decreases. This is
because the electromagnetic energy is more quickly dissipated into heat, causing a loss in signal
strength at depth. Higher frequencies do not penetrate as far as lower frequencies but give
better resolution. In moist / saline formation and /or clay laden soils and soils with high electrical
conductivity, penetration is sometimes only a few centimetres.
Another limitation of the Ground Probing Radar technique is the presence of saturated materials,
or clay-rich which act to dissipate the transmitted radar signal. Under such conditions, the depth
penetration is reduced, and the resolution is also degraded. At the above site however, the main
target for the ground probing radar are within the shallow subsurface strata, and by employing
more than one antenna frequency, it is thought that this limitation will be overcome.
It does not provide any information related to the geometry or the material of the utility.
In some cases, if two smaller pipes are close to each other, it may be detected as one due to
resolution issue at greater depths, however this situation arises very rarely.
It is difficult to identify smaller diameter utilities (e.g. electrical cables) at greater depths.
A.3.4 Processing
GPR data was processed using Radan7 software from GSSI. At first the GPR data was imported to
Radan7. After that the dimensions of files were set as per field notes. After setting up the
dimensions, different processing steps were applied for the best analysis of data. After analysing
the data, the depth slice sections are finally exported for interpretation of subsurface.
