Long time ago there lived a lonely family. They consisted of a lone
father and a daughter. Father named Keo, and the daughter Marika. One
day Keo felt in love with a widow named Machann, who also had a
daughter named Channty. Keo and Machann got married, and one month
later, Keo embarked on a distant journey in order to do business.
However, before departing, Keo said to his daughter Marika: "My dear!
While I am away, you must love your step mother as much as you do for
me. Avoid any argument. " Then Keo set off.

Once Keo was away, Mrs. Machann told her daughter to help find
maneuvers to get Marika out of the house because she did not want to
share the property with her. On the following days, the mother and the
daughter often beat Marika and forced her to serve them like a maid.

One month later Keo returned home. Once seeing her husband back,
Mrs. Machann started to vilifY Marika in front of her husband. But Keo
remained silent and had his daughter prepare the meal for him before
going to bed. A few days later Keo set off again. He told his wife and

One day, Ms. Channty spotted Ms. Marika sport nice dress and felt envious. She then
started to beat up Ms. Marika of her own free will. " Hey! You bloody Marika! Who
lets you have such a nice dress? Do you know they are mine, give me back!", said Ms.
Channty while starting to batter Ms. Marika until she became unconscious. Ms.
Channty was panic and called for her mother's help. Mrs. Machann splashed water
on the face of Ms. Marika, who recovered from her and felt severely painful all over

She moved slowly, crying, toward a water well behind the village. Ms. Marika sit
somberly besides the well, feeling sorry about her poor fate . Out of a sudden there
appeared an almost toothless old woman with mopped long hair , big eyes and a walking
stick and asked: "What happens to you, my little girl? Why you sit and cry here?". Ms.
Marika told the old lady about her story. Having felt pity with her, the old lady asked her
to become her companion. On the way, the old lady reminded Ms. Marika: "If you see or
know something weird, just don't ask a question or speak nonsense. And when I ask you
to do something. just do it, don't ask".

Having arrived at the hut, the old lady gave her a grain of rice and a piece
of bone and said: "Take this stuff and cook it as food". Ms. Marika was
puzzled and wanted to ask, but hesitated as she remembered being told by
the old lady on the way. She took the stuff and did as what being told.
A moment later, the two items became very delicious food. "The food is
really delicious, myoid dear!", said Marika. The old lady smiled and said:
"Eat more if it is good before taking a rest" .

After having had the food, the two went to bed, lying face to face. Late into
the night, using magic spells, the old lady discharged the mouth smell as
stinking as carrian, but Ms. Marikajust ignored it and spent the rest of the
night until dawn. After having spent several weeks staying with the old
lady, Ms. Marika asked the old lady to let her visit her family. The old lady
agreed and told her to collect many eggs before leaving by saying: " Take
the eggs that agree to come along, not the ones that refuse". Marika went
to the place where eggs were stored and asked: "Eggs! Do you agree to
come along with me?". Some said yes while others refused. She picked up
the ones which agreed to go and got a full basket of eggs before getting
back to the old lady.

these three eggs. When your step mother harasses you, think about me and
" ' ,rnw out the first, the second and the third eggs. You will see what you

lady, and after travelling for a while, she started to throw the first egg onto
the ground. The egg cracked and turned into gold and diamond. She then
repeated with the other eggs until she was able to collect a full basket of
gold. She carried the basket in her hands and sang so happily that she
hardly realized that she arrived at her house.

When Ms. Channty and her mother saw Ms. Marika with a basket, they asked: "Hey!

The old lady took her to her house. Looking at the old lady's appearance, Ms. Channty
said to herself: "This old lady look very ugly and disgusting". Arriving at the old lady's
hut, she uttered loudly in a very scornful manner: "Why your hut has many leaking holes
. When it rains, water will be all over the place. It is hard to live in!". "I am so old to build
a nice house like you say", replied the old lady, who then gave her a piece of bone
and a grain of rice to prepare food. "Dam it! With one grain of rice, how can I
make a full cooker of boiled rice?". Hardly having finished her words, Ms.
Channty threw away the stuff given by the old lady and even trampled them
under her feet.

When night came, the old lady and Ms. Channty went to bed. The old lady
used her magic spells to let out the stinking mouth smell as she once did.
smelling the bad scent, Ms. Chmmty kept her face turned away from the
old lady until daybreak. The old lady came to know that she was a bad-
behavioured woman unlike Ms. Marika. In the morning, Ms. Channty said
to the old lady: "Grandmother! I want to go back home". The old lady told
her to go and fetch eggs like Ms. Marika. However, due to her greed, Ms.
Channty collected all ofthe eggs, including the ones which refused to come
along. Carrying a basket of eggs on her head, Ms. Channty then left for her
house without saying good-bye to the old lady. Half way to her house, Ms.
Channty started to throw the first egg. The egg cracked and became a
snake, and she continued with the second and the third and so on. There
appeared many snakes chasing and trying to bite her. There was one egg
left, and she held it tightly in her hand. After running a bit further, Ms.
Channty release the egg, which turned into a whip which chased and beat
her until she reached home, and it disappeared .

With cuts on the face and limbs, Ms. Channty burst into tears . The
