D. Discussing New Initial Task

Concepts and
TASK 1. WATCH ME!
Practicing new skills
#1

Class, I have a short clip of scenarios from Detective Conan. Let us

watch this video.

Okay, let us now answer the following questions. First question, what
can you observe from the video?”

Good observation. Now, based on this short video clip of Detective

Conan, what are the ways that Conan used to reveal the culprits?

Very good, everyone.

Great! All of your answers are correct.

Let’s unravel the mystery!

Day 1 The Title of our lesson this afternoon is all about

CITING EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT A GENERAL STATEMENT

When we have ideas about what we read, we need to cite text

evidence to support our claims.

The main idea is the most important part of the paragraph because it
is the central point of discussion.

General statement – is claim that needs to be proven. Usually

expresses the main point or a main idea in the sentence or paragraph.

The main idea is the most important part of the paragraph because it is
the central point of discussion.

Text evidence – uses specific examples and ideas from a text to help
support and further define your own claims and ideas.

Example: “The rain forest is home to many creatures. Monkeys,

birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals live in the rain forest.

This is the general statement that expresses the main idea of the
given paragraph. This claim needs to be proven.

What is the text evidence that supports the claim of the general
statement?

Monkeys, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals live in the forest.

This sentence is the text evidence that supports the claim of the
general statement. It uses specific examples like monkeys, birds,
reptiles, and others to make the claim of the general statement valid.

What’s New

Now, let us have another example.

Can you read this paragraph altogether, class?

The color of a metal changes when its temperature changes. At

higher temperatures, it becomes yellow and finally white. When the
wire inside becomes yellow-hot, the light bulb glows, or gives light.

General statement: The color of a metal changes when its

temperature changes.

Text/Specific evidence: At higher temperatures, it becomes yellow

and finally white. When the wire inside becomes yellow-hot, the light
bulb glows, or gives light. When metals become very hot, it begins to
glow.”

The general statement only stated the main idea of the paragraph
while the text/specific evidence listed down the details about metals
when the temperature changes.

The text/specific evidence presents the whole message of the

paragraph because you can see the whole point of the paragraph
because it is more detailed.

The importance of text/specific evidence is it will explain and prove

the general statement so that the readers will understand.

Evidence is here to support and prove the general statement.

Now, let us deepen the knowledge what general and text/specific

statements are.

General statement it represents a broad description of something.

Okay, A text/specific statement is something is precisely stated.

Are there any questions? Any clarifications?

Okay, thank you for listening!

Discovery Task:

Activity: Identify me!

With the same group.

Directions: Encircle the general statement and underline the

text/specific evidence. Is that clear?

“My grandfather has different hobbies for his pastime. He likes

to go fishing, biking, and woodworking.”

“My grandmother loves flowers. She has different flowers in her

garden. She has gumamelas, santans, roses, sampaguitas, and
orchids.”

Where is the general statement there?

How about the text/specific evidence?

Great job, class.

Flowers and hobbies are general terms while the examples are the
specific ones.

Class, just remember a general statement is normally the topic or

broad description of something in the paragraph and a specific
statement refers to an exact, precise fact or description of
something mentioned in the text.

identify not only the main idea of the text but also the specific details
to support the main idea.

2. Identify the general statement or the main idea from the

text you read.

When you are able to identify the general statement or the main idea
of the text, it would be easier for you to cite or research for the text
evidence to support your claim.

3. Go back to the text to find supporting statements to give

your claims valid.

Once the general statement is identified, that’s the time to look for
some specific details from the text that will support the general
Day 2 statement or idea.
4. Add the quotes to your response.

Finally, add the quotes of the author or use your own words to relay
the idea of the author to support or explain your claim.

5. Remember, not all ideas are explicitly stated in the text.

Sometimes we have to make an inference. To do this, we use evidence

from the text and our prior knowledge to understand the text better.
This is called “to read between the lines”.

Example 1: Religious gatherings represent Filipinos’ faithfulness to God.

We may have different religious but we commonly believe in one
