peers.
In this type of learning process, students are exposed to more interesting
and valuable experiences. Dealing things outside of a classroom is often
more engaging and fun. It provides better retention of knowledge and
exercise skills.

ASSERTION is a statement used to make a declaration or to express strong
belief on a particular topic, often without evidence. Often, assertions are
made after reading a story or a poem, and after watching a movie or play.
Example
When you eat an apple, you are free from any illness
HOW TO WRITE AN ASSERTION
 Be Knowledgeable – Research on the subject. Get the facts about a
particular topic and organize them.
 Back it up- Use the facts that you have researched to support clear
your claim.
You can remember the process of defending an assertion with the
acronym “ARE”
A is for “Assertion”. Assert by discussing, judging and deciding an
opinion on the aspect of any text.
R is for “Reason”. Find a reason that strongly supports the assertion
E is for “Evidence”. Find evidence from the text that directly
supports the reason

 Be concise – Be direct in stating your claim

REACTION is an action taken in response to something.


Example
Truly, I eat an apple everyday and I don’t get sick easily.

Things to remember in reacting to assertions made by the author in a


text:
 Read and understand the text
 Analyze the assertion made by the author
 State your reaction clearly
 Support your ideas and opinions by explaining your stand

Here are sample statements of assertion and reaction:


a. Assertion: Drinking a glass of milk can make our bones and teeth
healthy and strong
Reaction: Yes, I drink a glass of milk every day and it makes my
bones and teeth healthy and strong

b. Assertion: My friend Sheila invites me to eat at Jollibee since it is the


best fast food in town
Reaction: No, I will not go with her because my mother said that it is
not safe in there. Besides, it is not the best fast food in town.
