ADDICTION TO GADGETS AND ITS NEGATIVE EFFECTS TO STUDENTS’

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN DLANHS-SHS

INTRODUCTION:
The world is now open to all advancement especially to technology. known to be an
efficient and effective way to do things in the workplace or anywhere. Tal and Torous (2017)
said the rapid development of modern technology in the era of technological gadget has led to
the revolution of modern media by the present generation Z (Gen Z). Previously, the use of
gadget is very limited to professionals but nowadays, the use of these gadgets is not uncommon
especially among Gen Z. More and more gadget users are able to own these devices because they
are widely available and are commonly sold at affordable price. With this, people are all in
creating new inventions for a greater work performance. However, does it really help people?
Or does it bring distraction?

Schools nowadays are technology based. In Demetrio L. Alviola National High School –
SHS, teachers have adopted new teaching methods using the new technology, while students can
now maximize their learning with the many resources made available to them. With new
information technology, education is fast becoming free of time and space. However, most
students use technology and their gadgets most of the time to the pony where it gets hard for
them to put their gadgets down and start working on school works. This is where their academic
performance gets affected. Students became dependent on the internet or in their mobile
phones. They became dependent to the extent they lose control. This now leads to
addiction, losing control is getting addicted. This is one reason why they lose focus on school
works. This is not the proper aftermath or the supposed effect of advancement of technology.

According to James Shanahan, “Depending on whom you ask, the technology is either
beneficial or has negative effects on health and environment”. Just like mentioned, students lose
focus on school works. Not only focus did they lose but also their interests. They became more
interested in mobile games and social media applications since it is the time of their youth that
they get involved in fun. Based on older people's perception, youth today lose or lacks discipline
that is why it is hard for them to realize what their priorities are.

The main objective of this study is to know the impact of gadgets to the academic
performance of the students in DLANHS - SHS. This study helps the students to have knowledge
on what is the possibility of what will happen to them if they continue to get addicted to mobile
devices.

This study will examine the use and impacts of the gadget as a learning tool on the
academic performance of the senior high school students of DLANHS. As confusion still arises
that either gadget addiction is beneficial in students’ life or does it have negative or positive
influence on students’ academic performance, this study would provide more in-depth sight on
the impacts that a gadget could have on a student’s academic performance.
