STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This mini research will help the researcher to determine whether the students
nutritional status in Grade 10 in CHSEC has an impact on the academic performance of
the school.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Undernutrition is negatively affecting learning as a result of increased illnesses,
decreased cognitive function, and poor school attendance rates (Anne Muiru et al.
2014).Students who do not take enough of some essential nutrients,such as calcium,
potassium, and vitamin C, may not be able to perform at their best academically
(Nabarro et al. 2012). Because of early start of classes,this cause the students in
CHSEC to frequently skip breakfast,and hunger can have an impact on a person’s
nutrition. Poor learning outcomes are significantly influenced by poverty,which prevents
many families from providing their children with the nutrition they require to succeed in
school.Without a doubt, therefore, undernutrition is a recurring problem for many
individuals which will negatively affect the academic success.Hence,the researcher
must identify which students are having difficulty in academics because of nutritional
deficiency.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researcher may able to identify students who needs support and intervention
about the importance of nutrition in our academic performance. This will reveal whether
or not the students are having difficulty with undernutrition.

METHODOLOGY
A. Research Design
This is quantitative research. Documentary analysis was used in conducting this
mini research

B. Participants/Respondents
Grade 10 students at CHSEC

C. Data Gathering
The data were taken from the teacher’s class record and student’s BMI

D. Statistical treatment
 Percentile
 Percentile Rank
THE TABLE BELOW IS THE MEAN/AVERAGE OF GRADE
10 STUDENTS UNDERWEIGHT IN 1st to 3rd QUARTER S.Y. 2022-2023

80 87 88 89 88 78
87 87 88 80 90 79
85 83 87 77 82 86
89 86 85 79 88 88
82 91 93 81 78 79

Step 1: Find the Range = Range = Highest number- Lowest number

Range= 93-77
Range= 16
Step 2:Use 2ⁿ>N
2¹=1
2²=2
2³=8
2⁴=16
2 to the power of 5 =32
32>16
Classes width=range/classes =16/5 Class width=3.2 / 3 round off
Number of classes :6 Class width:3
Desired class Tally Frequency Cumulative Lower
Intervals Frequency Boundaries
92-94 | 1 30 91.5
89-91 |||| 4 29 Pr90 88.5
86-88 |||||-|||||-| 11 25 85.5
83-85 ||| 3 14 82.5
80-82 ||||| 5 11 P25 79.5
77-79 |||||-| 6 6 76.5
N=30
I. Find the 25th Percentile
Step 1. Step 2.
P25=k(n)/100 LB=79.5
=25(30)/100 n= 30
=750/100 Cfb= 6
= 7.5 Fqk= 5
I= 3
K= 25

Step 3. 8
Pk=LB+[K(N)/100-cfb/fqk] i
P25=79.5+[7.5-6/5] 3
P25=79.5+[1.5/5]3
P25=79.5+[0.3]3
P25=79.5+0.9
P25=80.4.
Therefore, 25% (7)of the students has an average grade of
less than or equal to 80.4 while 75%(23)of the students has an
average greater than or equal to 80.4.

II. Find the 90th Percentile Rank

Step 1. Step 2.
P90 is within 89-91. LB=88.5
n= 30
Cfb=25
Fp= 4
I= 3
P= 90
Step 3.

Ppr=100/n[(p-lb)fp/I+cfb]
Pr90=100/30[(90-88.5)4/3 + 25]
Pr90=3.33[(1.5)4/3+25]
Pr90=3.33[6/3+25]
Pr90=3.33[2+25]
Pr90=3.33[27]
Pr90=89.91
Therefore, 89.91%(27)of the students has an average of less than or
equal to 90 while 10.09%(3) of the students has an average of greater
than or equal to 90.
METHODOLOGY
E. Results and finding
25%(7) of the students has an average grade less than or equal to 80.4 while
75%(23) of students has an average greater than or equal to 80.4.
89.91% (27)of the students has an average of less than or equal to 90 while 10.09%
(3)of the students has an average of greater than or equal to 90.
Conclusion and recommendations
Based on the result,its state that there was no significant difference in academic
performance based on weight and height of the respondents.A large part of the students
have an average of 80 and the passing rate is almost 100% which indicates that the
undernutrition doesn’t really affect the academic performance of the students but the
average 80 is also close to failing rate 75%. We must keep in mind that health is more
important than grades since health is wealth, and that we must take care of our health
and avoid undernourishment as it may have a bad long-term impact on us.
