Carnatic Style of Music / संगीत क क टक शैल

● Purandar Das is considered as the founder of the Carnatic style of music.
परु ं दर दास को संगीत क क टक शैल का सं थापक माना जाता है ।
● The credit for the development of the Carnatic style goes mainly to three
musicians named— Shyama Shastri, Tyagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar.
क टक शैल के कास का ेय मु य प से यामा शा ी, यागराज और
मथ ु ु वामी द तार नाम के तीन संगीतकार को जाता है ।
● They are called the triratnas of Carnatic music.

● Their period stands from 1700 to 1850 AD.

● Apart from them three main exponents of Carnatic Music were Kshetra
Rajan, Swati Tirunal, Subramaniya Bharathi.

Khyal / याल
● Khyal is a Hindustani form of vocal music, adopted from medieval Persian
music.
याल म यकाल न ारसी संगीत से अपनाया गया संगीत का एक द ं ु तानी प
है ।
● Khyal, literally meaning "thought" or "imagination".
याल का शा क अ है " चार" या "क पना"।
● Khyals are also popular for depicting the emotions between two lovers,
situations of ethological significance in Hinduism and Islam.

● The origination of Khyal is controversial, Many argue that Amir Khusrau
created the style in the late 16th century.

● The word gharana is derived from the Urdu/Hindi word 'ghar', which means

Gwalior Gharana / वा यर घराना

● Gwalior Gharana is the oldest and also considered the Mother of all other
Gharanas.
वा यर घराना सबसे परु ाना है और इसे अ य सभी घरान क जननी भी माना
जाता है ।
● The rise of the Gwalior Gharana started with the reign of the Mughal
emperor Akbar .
● The favorite singers of this patron of the arts, such as Miyan Tansen, who
was the most famous vocalist (most famous Dhrupad singers) at the court
of Akbar.
● The most popular figures of this gharana have been Ustad Hassu Khan,
Nathu Khan and Vishnu Paluskar.

Kirana Gharana / राना घराना

● The name of this school of music derives from Kirana or Kairana, a town and

● Abdul Karim Khan was a pioneer and the founder of the Kirana Gharana.

in January 2022.

Patiala Gharana / प याला घराना

● In the 19th century, this gharana was propounded by Bade Fateh Ali Khan
and Ali Bakhsh.
19 वीं शता द म इस घराने के पादन बड़े फतेह अल खान और अल ब श ने
या था।
● The most famous singer of this gharana was Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab,
who is one of the most famous singers of India.
इस घराने के सबसे ध गायक बड़े गलु ाम अल खान साहब थे, जो भारत के
सबसे ध गायक म से एक है ।

Agra Gharana / आगरा घराना

● The real founder of this Gharana was "Haji Sujan Khan".
इस घराने के वा त क सं थापक "हाजी सज ु ान खान" थे।
● This gharana pays special attention to restrictions.
● यह घराना बं श पर शेष प से यान दे ता है ।
● Haji Sujan Khan was given the title of 'Deepak Jyoti' by Emperor Akbar.

 Bhendi Bazaar / डं ी बाजार
● Nazir Khan, Chhajju Khan and Khadim Khan founded the Bhendi Bazar
Gharana related to Khayal singing in the 19th century.
नजीर खान, छ जू खान एवं खा म खान ने 19वीं शता द म खयाल गा क से
संबं त डं ी बाजार घराने क थापना क थी।
● Chhajju Khan and Khadim Khan settled in Bhindi Bazaar, Mumbai and
started this gharana.
● छ जू खान एवं खा म खान मब ंु ई के डं ी बाजार म बस गए एवं इस घराने क
शु आत क ।
● Amaan Ali Khan, son of Chhajju Khan and Anjanibai Malpekar, is a famous
exponent of this gharana.

● The Dagar gharana belongs to the Dhrupad style of singing.

 Talwandi Gharana / तलवंडी घराना
● The family belonging to Talwandi Gharana is currently based in Pakistan.
This is the reason why it is very difficult to place it under the Indian music
system.

Bettiah Gharana / बे या घराना

● Bettiah Gharana was represented by the Mishra family.

● Presently Indra Kishore Mishra is the lead singer belonging to Bettiah
Gharana.

Thumri / ठुमर
● Thumri is a vocal form of Indian classical music.
ठुमर भारतीय शा ीय संगीत क एक गायन शैल है ।
● There is primacy of taste, color and emotion in it. That is, in which the
beauty of emotion is considered more important than the purity of melody.
इसम रस, रं ग और भाव क धानता होती है । अ त सम राग क शु धता क

● The Bhakti movement has had the greatest influence on this style as love
for Krishna is shown.

Lucknow Gharana
● In the 19th century, the last Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, patronized
Kathak dance.
● Wajid Ali Shah had patronized the Lucknow Gharana.
● Shri Ishwari Prasad ji, a native of the Handia region in Prayagraj (Allahabad),
was established as the original founder of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak
dance.
● This gharana is known for the Khayal and Dhrupad styles.
● Pandit Sakharam and Ayodhya Prasad are famous Pakhawaj players of
Lucknow.
● Sarik Ali Khan is a famous Sarangi player.
● Bakhtoor Khan and Modu Khan are known for playing tabla in Lucknow.
● Bindadin Maharaj, Kalkadin Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj
and Birju Maharaj are the prominent Kathak dancers of Lucknow Gharana.

Banaras Gharana
● The third Gharana of Kathak dance is popularly known as Banaras Gharana
or Janaki Prasad Gharana.
● Janaki Prasad was a resident of Varanasi and the brother of the famous
tabla player Pandit Ram Sahay Ji.
● Janaki Prasad was the founder of Benaras Gharana of Kathak.
● Famous thumri singers Girija Devi and Siddheshwari Devi are related to
Banaras songs.
● Shambhu Maharaj and Mannu Mishra are the main Pakhawaj players of
Banaras Gharana.
● Pandit Ramsahay, Pandit Janaki Mishra, Kishan Maharaj and Anokhe Lal

 Raigarh Gharana
● Raigarh is known as the ‘Cultural capital of Chhattisgarh’, Raigarh is famous
for its dance form “Kathak” (as Raigarh Gharana) and classical music.
● Credit goes to Maharaja Chakradhar Singh under whose patronage Raigarh
flourished as a Center of art and culture.

Tappa / ट पा
● Tappa is a distinctive genre of Hindustani music.

● These songs are mostly in Punjabi language.
ये गीत बहुधा पंजाबी भाषा म होते ह।
● The credit goes to "Shauri Miyan" for establishing them as courtly singing in
