1. PURPOSE

This is to assure that the requirements of installation for linier heat detector
are meets the codes requirements and contract specifications. This
procedure is to describe the minimum requirements for installation for linier
heat detector which is of prime importance for the personnel safety and fire
fighting system availability. To make sure, the works are carried out in
acceptable workmanship and follow the requirements in the quality manual.

3. INSTRUMENT TO BE USED

1.1 Protectowire Linier Heat Detector

1.2 Pressing Terminals

4. SAFETY PRECAUTION

o This detector is not fragile but crushing or pinching will injure it therefore
DO NOT over tighten the fasteners as this may breach the outer jacket or
crush the inner insulation, causing “false alarm”. All fasteners must allow
the wire to expand and contract with temperature.
o DO NOT leave the detector on the floor and walk on it or set ladders on it
during installation, it may cause “false alarm”.
o Comply with all safety requirements described in instrument equipments
manual
o Worker should be used PPE (safety gloves)

5. PREPARATION TO INSTALLATION

o Ensure that the cables are rated for 30 VaC, 42 VdC. Resistance is
approximately one ohm per five feet (1.5m) of twisted pair (two
conductors)

o Protectowire Linier Heat Detector is approved as a heat actuated

automatic fire detector and is intended to be used on a supervised
initiating circuit of an approved fire protective signaling control unit.

o The Detector must be installed in continuous runs without taps or

branches in accordance with applicable sections of NFPA 70 National
Electrical Code, NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code.

6. PROCESS OF INSTALLATION

6.1 Protectowire is a listed, heat-actuated automatic fire detector and is

intended to be used on a supervised initiating circuit of an approved
fire protective signaling control unit.

6.2 Copper wire, of an approved type, with a minimum conductor size of

18 AWG, shall be installed from the control panel out to the hazard
area where it is connected to the beginning of the Protectowire portion
of the circuit.

6.3 Each end of the Proptectowire portion of every initiating circuit shall
terminate in an approved zone box, end-of-line zone box, or other
junction box provided as part of the system.

6.4 Strain relief connectors, Model SR-502, shall be installed in all

junction boxes where Protectowire enters or exits the enclosure, in
order to hold the cable securely and reduce dust and moisture entry
into the box. All zone box enclosures shall be rated and approved for
use in the environment in which they will be installed.

6.5 All electrical connections made within each zone box between
Protectowire and the circuit’s interconnecting copper wiring or end-of-
line device, shall be made via terminals.

6.6 Herewith the standard installation from the Design Description :

6.6.1 The common cable is adopted from the module box to outside
protection area.
6.6.2 The junction box and the end resistor box ouside the room
must adopt waterproof mode
6.6.3 The linier heat cables should not be cut off in a protection area
if it must be cut off, the joint should be connected with
terminal, and the terminal box, there should be clear mark.
6.6.4 When installing the linier heat cable, the winding angle should
not be too sharp. And the cable should not be stepped on or
weighed down by heavy things. For protecting from damaging

the cable, DO NOT use electric gas welding or engage in

construction that can bring out high temperature.
6.6.5 When installing the linier heat cable on cable tray the cable
should be laid in cable tray and should be disposed according
to near sinusoid (figure 1) and should be fixed with nylon line.

6.6.6 When installing the linier heat cable in protected area of water
distinguish system, install the cable under the fire extinction
pipe net, and the distance where the steel-wire fixed is
100~150mm, and then fixed the linier heat cable with the
plastic clip. The JB should be waterproof (Figure 2).

6.7 Whenever possible, corners should be rounded by pulling the detector

into a natural curve rather than bending it. This both reduces
installation time and improves the finished appearance. It also creates
a spring tension at the corners which helps hold the detector in place.
