1. Electrical Installation
1.1.1. Introduction
This report elaborates on the envisaged electrical system design for residential
building proposed to be constructed at …..City. Mains electric power will be
supplied from the nearest source of the Ethiopian electric Power Corporation
(EEPCO). It is assumed that EEPCO’s Supply shall be realized through overhead
distribution transformers capable of delivering estimated peak demand. Electric
power within the premise of the project will be delivered in the form of a three
phase 2 wire 220 volts. 50 Hz and single phase 2 wire systems by means
underground feeder cable.

1.2 Scope of design work

The electrical design work as shown on the accompanying drawings is worked

out according to appropriate standards and norms like EBCS-10. DIN. VDE and
IEE wiring regulation and the prevailing norms of Ethiopian Electric Power
corporation ( EEPCo)
1.3.1 Lighting system

All lighting system is designed with the use of compact. Florescent or energy
saving lamps with illumination level for each room set as per the EbCS-10. The
Calculation for the number of light fixture for each room and the illumination
level is accordance with the relevant clause of EBCS-10 light fixtures are
selected to fit the function..
The following formulas are applied while calculating the number of fixtures for
each room
N= ExA
0.4*ø
where

E= illumination level required (lux)

10
A= Room area ( sq.m)
Ø = lumen output of lamp ( in lux)
1.4 Service power and socket out lets
Each area in each building is provided with appropriate number of service
power and socket out lets depending on the service of the area
1.5 Distribution boards
1.5.1 Sub circuit design
The circuits for lighting and socket out lets are designed in order to
accommodate equal distribution of power to each sub circuit with the lighting
load determined as follows
P=N1Xw1
Where N number of lamps in the sub circuit
W the power of each lamp in KW
I Type of fitting in each sub circuit
Similarly the loads for the of each socket sub circuit is determined by
P = NX200 w
Where N number of socket in the sub circuit
1.5.2. Main Distribution Board (MDB’s)
The main distribution board is located in ground floor which is suitable for riser
area near to the stairs area and shall be flush mounted type made of metal
enclosure frames fixed to the floor comprising all insulated modular units
(MCB) and miniature/ automatic circuit breakers rating and quantity shown on
the relevant drawing. The bus bar system for MDB is selected one step higher
from the main circuit breakers. And shall be made of copper. The panel shall be
complete with all the necessary gland plates. Cable entries. Fixing brackets and
supports suitable for the cable specified
The following formula has been used to determine the current ratings of
miniature circuit breakers where S Total KVA and pis total KW

11
L1-ph= Sx10 3
V.
Or
L1-ph= PX103
V*0.8
1.5.3. Sub Distribution Board ( SDB’S)
The Sub distribution boards are located within each floor location and in line with
the main distribution boards each panels are assigned to feed lighting and service
socket circuits. In similar manner as MDB the SDBS Comprise of a miniature circuit
breakers the bus bars for the panels has been selected on step higher from the main
circuit breaker ratings to carry a current of 20 to 50 percent of the rated current. The
panel shall be complete with all the necessary gland plates. Cable entries. Fixing
brackets and supports suitable for the cable specified an addition of 25% reserve
spaces has been left for the future similar formulas’ as per the main board has been
used to determine the ratings of each breakers.
1.6 Power cables
All power distribution system is done with multi-core PVC Sheathed cable of copper
conductor of appropriate size with due consideration to voltage drop and current.
Cable design and current carrying capacity are in accordance with B56004 or VDE
0271. VDE 0298 and the relevant clause of EBCS-10.
Power cables run under ground in PVc conduit The color identification of cable
cores shall comply with the relevant clause of EBCS- 10. Power cables from MDB to
SDP’s are provided with due consideration to amp city and voltage drop.
The following formulae are used for calculating 1-phase and 3- phase current
respectively:
Single phase current (1) in amperes for a given apparent power Sin KVA:

L1 –ph=Sx103
V
12
Where v= phase voltage in volts
Three phase current (1) in amperes for a given apparent Power Sin KVA
13-ph = SX103
√3 XV Where V= Line Voltage in volts

Power cables are Selected in such a way so as not to exceed a voltage drop of
5%
Voltage drops in percent Vd % for a give power p in KW:
Vd% = Lx1.732x1x0.8 X 100 YXA V
Vd=Lx 1.732X1X0.8
YxA
Where L= Wiring distance in m
1=Current in Amp.
A= Cross- Sectional area in mm2
V= line voltage in volts (380V)

Y=
Conductivity in mm2 /ᾯ xm . You = 56

1.7 Grounding system

The main distribution boards shall be grounded with bare copper conductor of
appropriate cross- section and shall be connected to the ear thingsystem.
Farthing shall be done with property buried galvanized steel earth electrode.
Coupling and all necessary accessories. All other systems shall be 5 wires for
three phases and e wire for single phase.
1.8 Telephone system

13
Each area in building is provided with appropriate number of telephone out lets
depending on the service of the area with main telephone entry located in
ground floor with riser junction boxes at each floor
