REMARKS
Let 𝒙 be a differentiable function which represents a quantity that
changes with time 𝒕, then
𝒅𝒙
• is the rate of change of 𝒙 with respect to 𝒕.
𝒅𝒕
𝒅𝒙
• is positive if and only if 𝒙 increases with time (𝒕); and
𝒅𝒕
𝒅𝒙
• is negative if and only if 𝒙 decreases with time (𝒕).

RELATED RATES
A related rates problem concerns the relationship among the rates of
change of several variables with respect to time, given that each variable
is also dependent on the others. If 𝒚 is dependent on 𝒙, then the rate of
change of 𝒚 with respect to 𝒕 is dependent on the rate of change of 𝒙 with
𝒅𝒚 𝒅𝒙
respect to 𝒕, that is, is dependent on .

EXAMPLE 1
Two Rates that are Related
Suppose that 𝒙 and 𝒚 are both differentiable functions of 𝒕 and are related
by the equation 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑. Find 𝒅𝒚/𝒅𝒕, given that 𝒅𝒙/𝒅𝒕 = 𝟐 when 𝒙 = 𝟏.
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑 Write the original equation Given that 𝒙 = 𝟏 and 𝒅𝒙/𝒅𝒕 = 𝟐, then,

EXAMPLE 2
Ripples in a Pond
A pebble is dropped in a calm pond, causing ripples in the form of concentric circles. The
radius 𝒓 of the outer ripple is increasing at a constant rate of 1 foot per second. When the
radius is 4 feet, at what rate is the total area 𝑨 of the disturbed water changing?

An Inflating Balloon
Air is being pumped into a spherical balloon at a rate of 4.5 cubic feet per minute. Find the
rate of change of the radius 𝒓 when the radius is 2 feet.

A ladder 10 meters long is leaning against a wall. If the bottom of the ladder is being
pushed horizontally towards the wall at 2 m/s, how fast is the top of the ladder moving
when the bottom is 6 meters from the wall?

truck leaves the intersection?
