DESCRIPTION
The present experiment setup consists of a Single Stage Reciprocating Pump . Suction pipe
is connected to the sump tank and suction pressure can be measured by using suction
gauge fitted on it. Discharge pressure can be measured by pressure gauge fitted on the
discharge pipe. The discharge is measured by measuring cylinder. The flow rate of pump is
controlled by the control valve to take readings at various flow rates.
PROCEDURE
1. Fill the sump tank with clean water.

2. Switch ‘ON’ the main and select the desired speed of pump.
2

3. Now for a particular value of discharge opening note down the suction and delivery
pressure.
4. Using hopper fixed at measuring tank collect water in measuring tank and calculates
discharge of water.

5. Note down the delivery head and suction head.

6. Repeat the experiment for different opening of delivery.

2. Total head in meters

H = {10 x (delivery pressure) + Vacuum Gauge/760)}

Dif. In elevation of pressure gauge = 0.5 meter

3. Break power delivered by pump

BP = ρ g Q H
Where ρ = Density of water,(kg/m3) – 1000 kg/m3
g=Acceleration due to gravity (m/s2) 9.81 kg/s2

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. The water in the sump should be free from foreign particles.

2. Open both control valves at delivery & suction line before switch on the mains

3. Always start from lower speed.

After the experiment is over open all the delivery and suction valves and switch ‘OFF’ the on
control panel and then mains
