FOREWORD
B.S.Envi.Tech Pvt Ltd., has carried out the assignment of Environmental Monitoring study at
Gandhamrdan-B lron Ore Mine of Odisha Mining Gorporation, falling under the jurisdiction
of Keonjhar District, Odisha.
The work involves measurement to assess the Ambient Air Quality, Fugitive Dust, Ambient
Noise, Work Zone Noise, Ground Water Quality, Surface Water Quality ,Surface Water Flow
Rate and Ground Water Quality in and around the Gandhamrdan-B lron Ore Mine.
The team of B S Envi- Tech Pvt Ltd,, has conducted field studies for the month of July-2023
The data generated during this period has been compiled and presented in this report. This
data gives clear picture of monitoring of Environmental parameters at Gandhamrdan-B lron
Ore Mine of Odisha Mining Corporation.

-1.0 INTRODUCTION
Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC), a Government of Odisha undertaking has

engaged M/s B.S.Envi-Tech Pvt.Ltd. (BSET), for carrying out Monitoring of Environmental
Parameters at Gandhamardan-A lron Ore Mine located in Keonjhar District of Odisha.
BSET, is an accredited professional services organisation providing services in the field of

Environmental Consultancy, Analytical Testing and Mining Services,
BSET is Accredited by Quality Council of lndia - National Accreditation Board for Education
and Training (OCl - NABET) as Category "A" Consultancy organization for undertaking
Environmental Jobs.
BSET is supported by own Laboratory accredited by Ministry of Environment, Forests &

Climate Change and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories
(NABL),
The purpose of the study is to assess the Ambient Air Quality, Fugitive Dust, Ambient Noise,
Work Zone Noise, Surface Water Flow Rate, Ground Water Quality, Surface Water Quality
and Metrological Parameters in and around the Gandhamardan-B lron Ore Mine of OMC for
the month ol July-2023.
The team of engineers from BSET, has collected air and water samples during the study
period.
2.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of the Environmental monitoring studies includes the following environmental
parameters. The Monitoring Locations are shown in Fig-1.0 & Fig-2.0

Reliable information of wind movements is a critical requirement for air quality

management. Polluting gases and SPM released from different sources disperse by a
variety of mechanisms. By the time the pollutants reach to different receptors ground level
their concentration isreduced to a fraction of the emitted level. The extent of dispersion and
the resultant Ground Level Concentration depends on local meteorological parameters like
wind speed, wind direction

(Respirable Dust Sampler with Cyclone (Gravimetric))
Scope and Application
This standard prescribes a method for the determination of concentration of the Respirable
particulate matter in air.
Principle
Ambient Air laden with suspended particles enters the system through the inlet pipe. As the
air passes through the cyclone, coarse, on respirable dust is separated from the air stream
by centrifugal forces acting on the solid particles and collect in the sampling bottle placed at
its bottom. The respirable dust is retained by the filter and the carrier air exhausted from the
system through the blower.
Samplins Method
The respirable dust concentration will be determined by a gravimetric analysis, requiring an
accurate estimation of change in weight of the Whatman GF/A filter on account of the dust
deposited on it.Consider the lnitial and Final Flow rates as Qr and Qz. The Volume of air
sampled can be calculated as

(Fine Dust Sampler (Gravimetric))
This standard prescribes a method for the determination of concenhation of the Fine
Principle
An electrically powered air sampler draws ambient air at a constant volumetric flow rate of 16.67
LPM (1ma/hr) maintained by a mass flow controller coupled to micro preocessor, into a specially
shaped inlet and through an inertial particle size separator (impactor) where, suspended particulate
matter in the PMz s size range is separated for collection on a PTFE filter over the specified sampling
period.
Samplinq Method
The Fine dust concentration will be determined by a gravimetric analysis, requiring an

accurate estimation of change in weight of the PTFE filter on account of the dust deposited
on it.Consider the lnitial and Final Flow rates as Qr and Qz which is measured in DGM. The
Volume of air sampled can be calculated as

3.4 METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF SULPHUR DIOXIDE IN AMBIENT AIR
(lmproved West and Geake Method (Spectrophotometric))

This method is used to determine the concentration of Sulfur Dioxide Present in the
atmosphere,
Principle
SOz is absorbed from air in Sodium or potassium tetrachloromercurate (TCM). A stable
is formed. The complex is reacted with bleached
dichlorosulfito-mercurate complex
pararosaniline and Formaldehyde to form intensely coloured (Red-Purple) Para-
Rosanalinemethylsulphonicacid and the concentration of the colour is determined
spectrophotometrically at 560nm.
Samplins Method
SOz is collected by bubbling air through absorbing solution in a midget impinger placed in
the sampling system. Collect sample at a rate range of 0.2-1 LPM using the rotameter to
control the flow. Determine the volume of air sampled by multiplying the flow rate by time (in
minutes),After sample collection, the solutions are relatively stable, Al22oc, loss of S0z
occurs at the rate of 1 percent per day. So the samples are to be stored at Soc and
transferred to the laboratory for the further analysis.
Analytical Method
After24 hrexposure dilute the entire sample to 50ml with absorbing solution. Measure Sml
of the sample into a25ml volumetric flask by pipette for chemical analysis. Bring volume to
10 ml with absorbing reagent and add the color developing reagents. After 30 min reaction
take absorbance at 560 nm by using spectrophotometer. The Concentration can be known
by using the calibration curve between concentration and Absorbance,

- METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF NITROGEN DIOXIDE IN AMBIENT AIR
Modified Jacob & Hocheiser Method (Spectrophotometric)
This method is used to determine the concentration of oxides of nitrogen Present in the
atmosphere
Principle
Ambient nitrogen dioxides are collected by bubbling air through a solution of sodium
hydroxide and sodium arsenite,The concentration of nitrite ion (NOz) produced during
sampling is determined colourimetrically by reacting the nitrite ion with Phosphoric acid,
Sulphanilamide and NEDA and measuring the absorbance of the highly colored azo-dye at
540 nm,
Samplinq Method
Oxides of Nitrogen are collected by bubbling air through absorbing solution in a midget
impinger placed in the sampling system. Collect sample at a rate range of 0.2-1 LPM using
the rotameter to control the flow. Determine the volume of air sampled by multiplying the
flow rate by time (in minutes). The samples are to be stored at 5oc and transferred to the
laboratory for the further analysis.
Analvtical Method
After 24 hr, exposure dilute the entire sample up to 30ml with distilled water. Pipette 1Oml of
the collected sample into 50ml volumehic flask. Now add the colour developing reagents
and make up the volume to 50ml with distilled water. After 30 min reaction take absorbance
at 540nm by using spectrophotometer. The Concentration can be known by using the

calibration curve between concentration and Absorbance,

- 3.6 METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF CARBON MONOXIDE IN AMBIENT AIR
This method is used to determine the concentration of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere
Principle
The instrument provides the instant reading. The inshument measures the concentration
based on the electrochemical type method.
Samplins Method
Press the power key for a few seconds and power is turned on. The instrument will be auto
calibrated and will stabilize. After that the instrument is converted to Gas Measure Mode.
Gas Measure Mode indicates the concentration of the gas and the remained capacity of
battery on LCD, and it displays the gas concentration of the oxygen by % and such toxic
gases as H2S , CO and SO2 by ppm units. At Gas Measure Mode the maximum value,
STEL Value and TWA value are displayed consecutivel
3.7 METHOD FOR MEASURMENT OF FUGITIVE DUST IN AMBIENT AIR

(High Volume Sampler with Cyclone (Gravimetric))
This standard prescribes a method for the determination of concentration of the Suspended

Ambient Air laden with suspended particles enters the system through the inlet pipe, The
sampling flow rates should be within 1.1-1. mtlmin over 24hr sampling. As the air passes
through the cyclone, coarse, on respirable dust is separated from the air stream by
centrifugal forces acting on the solid particles and collect in the sampling bottle placed at its
bottom. The respirable dust is retained by the filter and the carrier air exhausted from the
system through the blower.

3.8 METHOD FOR MESUREMENT OF NOISE LEVELS

The objective of noise measurement is to make accurate measurement which gives us a
purposeful act of comparing noises under different conditions for assessment of adverse
impacts of noise and adopting suitable control techniques for noise reduction. A sound level
meter consists basically of a microphone and an electronic circuit including an attenuator,
amplifier, weighting networks or filters and a display unit. The microphone converts the
sound signal to an equivalent electrical signal. The signal is passed is passed through a
weighting network which provides a conversion and gives the sound pressure level in dB(A),
The monitoring will be canied out for 16 hours during Day time (06,00 am to 22.00 pm) and
8 hours during Night time (22.00 pm to 06.00 am) with data logging at 1 minute/S minutes/
60 minutes interval.
The data logged will be used for computation of equivalent value by using the below
formula:

3.9 METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE WATER FLOW RATE
The Objective of measurement of Surface Water Flowrate is to measure the accurate
measurement of velocities and discharges in rivers and canals. This is a cup type current
meter with a front hoop to protect the rotor and is used for measuring velocities between
0,1 m/sec to 3.5 m/sec. The Current meter ise used both in shallow channels and deep
rivers. ln shallow water courses, it is used with a wading rod, while in deep rivers it is
used with a suspension cable,The observations can be made by inseritng the instrument
into the Channerl or the river and the time shall be noted for the desired number of
revolutions, The velocity can be read from the calibration table supplied along with the
instrument,
3.10 PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTION, PRESERVATION AND TRANSPORATION OF
SAMPLES FROM FEILDTO LABORATORY
The sample integrity is maintained from sample reception to final analysis in the lab and
that all necessary documentation pertaining to sample traceability is readily available,
Removing samples that do not meet the acceptance requirements for elapsed time or
flow rate, and contacting site operators, as necessary, to repair damaged equipment or
correct faulty collection techniques sets forth the methods for use by field personnel
engaged in handling, storing and transporting samples,
