Dressmaking is the art of making


clothes, particularly women’s clothing items,
such as skirts, blouses, and gowns.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

MEASURING TOOLS: it is for pattern


alteration and body measurements to ensure
the garment fit.
Tape Measure - is a measuring
tool use for taking body measurement
to produce well fit clothes and pants.
This usually made of plastic or clothes.
Ruler - is measuring tool used
to measure and draft lines on a fabric
or pattern.

CUTTING TOOLS – used to remove


material from a work piece.
Embroidery Scissors - are
small scissors design for needle work.
Light Trimmer - is use for cutting small
corners or portion of the fabric, this tool
has one point blant to prevent the
fabric from snagging.
Thread Clippers - is a small
cutting tools use for sniping thread.

MARKING TOOLS – to transfer the


little notations that appear on your
pattern, it tells where to cut, fold, sew,
or place adjoining pieces.
Tracing wheel - is a marking
tool with saw tooth blade use to
transfer the marks from the pattern
paper to the cloth.
Tailor's Chalk - this is an
orange colored hard square wax use
for making guidelines or sawing lines in
fabric.
Tracing Paper - this is used
with the tracing wheel to transfer marks
from the pattern to the paper to the
cloth. Soft pencil - this is in drawing
lines and patterns construction.
Soft Pencil - Use in drawing
lines in pattern construction.

SEWING TOOLS – the various


instruments used for sewing by hand
or machine.
Needle - is a sewing tool that
has one sharp and end a hole at the
other to make the thread to pass
through.
Beading needles - very long
and fine with a sharp point. Used for
decorative work, for attaching beads
and sequins.
Curved needles - needle used
in sewing mattress and doing a
upholstery.
Straws - longer needles
between semi-colon used for tacking.
Pins – tiny sewing tools with a
sharp pointed tip used for variety of
purposes, such as holding pattern
pieces in place. Fit fabric or garment
on the body, hold fabric together, etc.
Safety pins – this pins come
with a safe cover for the pointed part to
prevent it from jabbing the skin.
Thread – used for stitching
cloth either by hand or machine and
comes with different colors and
thickness.

Direction: Get a needle and a piece of


cloth and follow the steps in making a basic
stitching pattern.

Whip Stitch

 Pull the yarn or your yarn needle over


your top fabric, and assure the knot
stays between the two cloths.
 Pierce through your bottom fabric and
exit at the same place you started with
the top cloth. It will lock your starting
stitches in place.
 Push the needle through the bottom
fabric, creating a diagonal stitch on the
edges of your fabric. Your quill and
thread must exit the top cloth to secure
them together.
 Repeat the process until you’ve
reached the ends of your fabrics. Don’t
forget to lock in your stitches.
