Czasowniki modalne

Przyjrzyjmy się czasownikom modalnym w odniesieniu do przeszłości. Po co ich

używamy/ Zwróć owagę na dopiski/ parafrazy i tłumaczenia.
Warto podkreślić, że tę samą ideę można wyrazić bez użycia modalnych za pomocą
słow perhaps, probably, I’m sure…, I don’t think… etc.

Mogliśmy spóźnić się na autobus. (Ale tak się nie stało.) We might have missed the bus. (But we didn’t.)
Sarah mogła zapomnieć kluczy w domu. (Być może zapomniała ich wziąć.) Sarah could have forgotten
her keys at home. (Perhaps she did forget them.)
John mógł rozbić ten wazon. (być może to zrobił) John may have broken that vase. (perhaps he did it)

Harry już by skończył. (Harry prawdopodobnie skończył.) Harry would have finished by now. (Harry
probably finished.)
Emily musiała już dotrzeć na lotnisko. (Najprawdopodobniej dodarła.) Emily must have arrived at the
airport by now. (Emily probably did.)
Harry powinien był już skończyć. (Prawdopodobnie skończył.) Harry should have finished by now. (Harry
has probably finished.)
Powinni byli już rozpocząć kurs. (Prawdopodobnie rozpoczęli kurs.) They ought to have started the
course by now. (They have probably started the course.)
