MEASURES OF POSITION

 it is a number that tells where

the score stands relative to
others in a set of data.
 It can be applied to ordinal
variables.

The 2 types of data:

 Ungrouped Data
 Grouped Data

The 3 measures of position:

Quartile
The quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into four equal
parts.

 Q1 is called the lower quartile

 Q2 is nothing but the median
 Q3 is the upper quartile

Formula for quartile:

 Q1 = ¼ (n +1)
 Q2 = 2/4 (n + 1)
 Q3 = ¾ (n + 1)
Example # 1
Find the Q1, Q2 and Q3 of the given
numbers: 13, 9, 18, 15, 14, 21, 7, 10, 11,
20, 5, 18, ,37, 16, 17

Example#2
Find the first quartile (Q1), and the
third quartile (Q3), given the scores
of 9 students in their Mathematics
Activity using linear interpolation.

1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30, 3, 21

Deciles
The deciles are the nine score
points which divide the distribution into ten
equal parts
General Formula:
Dk = k/10 (n + 1)

Example#1
Find the 3rd decile of the following test
scores of a random sample of ten
students: 15, 18, 20, 23, 28, 28, 33, 35,40,
42

Percentile
The percentiles are the ninety-nine
score points which divide a distribution into
one hundred equal parts, so that each part
represents the data set

General Formula:
Pk= k/100 (n+1)

Example#1
Find the 30th percentile or P30 of the
following test scores of a random sample
of ten students: 35, 42, 40, 28, 15, 23, 33,
20, 18, and 28.
C. ABSTRACTION

the teacher will summarize the lesson

with their formulas and ask question to
random student:

1. How do quartiles, deciles, and

percentiles help us understand
data better?

D. APPLICATION

The teacher will group the class into

three and each group will answer the
assigned measures of position.

The following are the scores of the 12

students of Grade 10- Camia in their 30-
item Math test. 5, 8, 11, 18, 28, 24, 23, 20,
19, 12, 24, 21.

Group 1- Solve for the Q3, D4, P15

Group 2- Solve for the Q1, D6, P6
Group 3- Solve for the Q2, D9, P8
