We argue that the ethical principles of justice provide an essential foundation for policies to protect

unborn generations and the poorest countries from climate change. Related issues arise in connection with

current and persistently inadequate aid for these nations, in the face of growing threats to agriculture and

water supply, and the rules of international trade that mainly benefit rich countries. Increasing aid for the

world’s poorest peoples can be an essential part of effective mitigation. With 20 percent of carbon

emissions from (mostly tropical) deforestation, carbon credits for forest preservation would combine aid to

poorer countries with one of the most cost-effective forms of abatement. Perhaps the most cost-effective

but politically complicated policy reform would be the removal of several hundred billions of dollars of

direct annual subsidies from the two biggest recipients in the OECD ― destructive industrial agriculture

and fossil fuels. Even a small amount of this money would accelerate the already rapid rate of technical

progress and investment in renewable energy in many areas, as well as encourage the essential switch to

conservation agriculture.

* mitigation: 완화 ** abatement: 감소 *** subsidy: 보조금

Invasions of natural communities by non-indigenous species are currently rated as one of the most

important global-scale environmental problems. The loss of biodiversity has generated concern over the

consequences for ecosystem functioning and thus understanding the relationship between both has become

a major focus in ecological research during the last two decades. The “biodiversity-invasibility hypothesis”

by Elton suggests that high diversity increases the competitive environment of communities and makes

them more difficult to invade. Numerous biodiversity experiments have been conducted since Elton’ time

and several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the often observed negative relationship between

diversity and invasibility. Beside the decreased chance of empty ecological niches but the increased

probability of competitors that prevent invasion success, diverse communities are assumed to use resources

more completely and, therefore, limit the ability of invaders to establish. Further, more diverse

communities are believed to be more stable because they use a broader range of niches than species-poor

communities.

When you watch a chase scene in an action movie, your heart races as well ─ you may be a little bit

scared, or excited. Your body and mind may react like the experience is real, as though it is happening to

you. That’s what happens when you visualize: You ask for the experience and your mind believes that it is

real, which creates the attraction for you to receive in your life. This technique is favored by many of the

world’s great coaches as they encourage athletes to visualize the actual race or contest ahead of time.

Every stroke, step, and muscle exertion is vividly imagined. The idea is, when you see it in your mind,

your body will surely follow. And, when the big day comes, the mind and body are so well trained to act

in unison that ultimate performance is virtually assured.

액션 영화에서 추격 장면을 볼 때, 심장도 함께 뛴다. 약간 무서워하거나 흥분할 수도 있다. 몸과 마음은 마치 그 경험이 자신에게 일어나

If you ask someone to name three sports, most likely he or she will be able to answer with ease. After

all, nearly everyone has an idea about what types of activities are regarded as sports and which are not.

Most of us think we know what sports are. However, the line drawn between examples of sports, leisure,

and play is not always clear. In fact, devising a definition that establishes clear and clean parameters

around what types of activities should be included and excluded is relatively difficult to do. Activities that

are regarded as play today may gain the status of sportin the future. For example, many people once

played badminton in their backyards but this activity was hardly considered a sport. Since 1992, however,

badminton has been an Olympic sport!

Though most bees fill their days visiting flowers and collecting pollen, some bees take advantage of the

hard work of others. These thieving bees sneak into the nest of an unsuspecting “normal” bee (known as

the host), lay an egg near the pollen mass being gathered by the host bee for her own offspring, and

then sneak back out. When the egg of the thief hatches, it kills the host’s offspring and then eats the

pollen meant for its victim. Sometimes called brood parasites, these bees are also referred to as cuckoo

bees, because they are similar to cuckoo birds, which lay an egg in the nest of another bird and leave it

for that bird to raise. They are more technically called cleptoparasites. Clepto means “thief” in Greek, and

the term cleptoparasite refers specifically to an organism that lives off another by stealing its food. In this

case the cleptoparasite feeds on the host’s hard-earned pollen stores.

We should appreciate the astounding amount of free service available to us from social network

companies, as well as search engines, websites full of expert information, and so on. We can choose

whether to use them or not. At the same time, the businesses that run these free services have a

responsibility to their users. If you invite your neighbors to use your car anytime they wish without

asking, you have an ethical responsibility not to leave the keys in the car when the brakes are not

working. It does not matter that you do not charge a fee. Companies may not, ethically, offer attractive

services and then cause a significant risk of harm, especially when the risk is hidden or unexpected.

Continual economic growth and constant population expansion is impossible within an effectively closed

system like Planet Earth. Our ultimate and longest-term response to resource depletion will therefore have

to involve obtaining raw materials from beyond our first planet. Throughout history, our ancestors learned

to venture further and further from home in search of new lands and new riches, and there is no reason

to believe that this will not happen again. Indeed, as I write these pages in mid-2011, NASA has just

allocated another significant round of funding to private-sector organizations that are developing a first

generation of commercial spacecraft. Google is also sponsoring a competition called the Lunar X Prize in

which 29 private companies are competing to send a robotic craft to the Moon.

Food manufacturers have to convey all kinds of information on their products. They have to tell us about

the calories, fat content, fiber, etc. Is it possible that the same attraction we have to zero price could also

apply to zero calories, zero trans fats, zero carbohydrates, etc.? If the same general rules apply, Pepsi will

sell more cans if the label says zero calories than if it says “one calorie.” Suppose you are at a bar,

enjoying a conversation with some friends. With one brand you get a calorie-free beer, and with another

you get a three-calorie beer. Which brand will make you feel that you are drinking a really light beer?

Even though the difference between the two beers is negligible, the zero-calorie beer will increase the

feeling that you’re doing the right thing for your health. You might even feel so good that you go ahead

and order a plate of fries.
