Strengths:From being in the BSW program, completing the upper division has given me the chance to learn how to engage in critical self-
assessment of knowledge and skills, and self-reflection of my emotions, feelings, and beliefs. Completing the e-Portfolio as a way to assess
ways I learned and engaged in each competency has proven to myself that I understand the content I have been taught. It has also
increased my confidence about finding jobs or engaging in grad school after obtaining my BSW degree. Prior to the Capstone course, I
was not aware of how much I learned, how it applies to me, or if I even remembered most of the content. Growing on my self-reflection
skills was an area of growth I am most proud of that the program implements in their curriculum. Over the past two years, I have been able
to write and speak about experiences and how I feel about them. The skills to self-reflection helped me grow as an individual as I began
to morph into my own person and learn things about myself that I did not know.
Weaknesses:Group collaboration is an area I will work on for personal and professional growth as I realized it was an area for
improvement through tests and experience this semester. I knew I disliked group work as I feared everyone would not hold themselves
accountable for their portion of the work. I would always distance myself from the group and prioritize my section of the project. Going
into grad school, I will likely start small by observing my interactions in group settings. From there, I will find ways to be more active in the
group. I receive constructive criticism well, so I plan to ask group members for feedback on their experience working with me. In addition
to group collaboration, leadership is an area I will work towards improving on. I have not had many leadership opportunities in
undergrad, so I have not had the chance to practice those skills with groups. Failure to practice these skills has reduced the confidence I
have in myself to do so. I am sure I possess leadership qualities; I just need to find spaces to utilize them. If I come across any leadership
development trainings, I will attend at least one to see if it helped.
Opportunities:To engage in further education and professional development going into grad school, I have registered to be a volunteer
with for the NASW National Conference this year. Becoming a member and volunteering with this organization will not only open more
opportunity for me, but also learn about the profession through another lens than being a student. By attending conferences and meetings
I will be able to work on my group collaboration and leadership skills. I am more than certain that opportunities to improve on those skills
will come as I have volunteered in the past and the organization is nationwide. When I enroll into grad school, I plan to further my
knowledge about mental health and aging by enrolling into specialized certification programs and working at sites catered to them. I
feel the certification programs would enhance my preparation to work directly with and on behalf of this population by learning specific
skills I probably would not learn in the MSW program.
Threats:A short-term strategy for self-care that I will use to adapt to graduate-level education will be learning about the city I am in.
Being in a new city will be difficult for me because I will not know much about it other than where I go to school and where I will be living
To relieve some stress this may cause, I plan to ride around the city in areas close to where I live to learn it by memory and get familiar
with roads, traffic, and feel of the city. A long-term strategy I plan to implement for self-care will be cooking more meals at home. This
will be my first official time living on my own for an extended period of time. With the time I hope to have, I want to create dishes for
myself, learn my cooking style, and be financially responsible when it comes to eating out and buying items at the grocery stores. Cooking
will also help consume cooked food over fast food which is easily assessable.
