Quartiles are values that

divide a set of data into

four equal parts.
n+ 1
Q i=i
4
Where;
i - 1, 2, 3
n - the number of values in the set of data.

Mendenhall and
Sincich method
Linear
Interpolation
Example1.
Find the , , of the
Q1 Q2 Q3

following set of data.

10, 2, 13, 12, 12, 6, 5

Try this!
Find the , , of the following set
Q1 Q2 Q3

of data.
21, 15, 18, 4, 19, 30,
24, 17, 11
Steps in interpolation method
1. Arrange the scores in ascending order
2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
3. Since the result is in decimal number, proceed to linear
interpolation
4. Find the difference between the two values wherein Q1
is situated
5. Multiply the result in step 2 by the decimal part obtained
in step 4
6. Add the result in step 5 to the second smaller number in
step 4
Example.
Find the , , , Given the scores of 9
Q1 Q2 Q3

students in their mathematics

activity using linear interpolation.
1, 27, 16, 7, 31, 7, 30, 3, 21

Try this!
Find the , , of the following set of
Q1 Q2 Q3

data.
The following are the ages of 13
students in statistic class:
18, 21, 25, 21, 17, 28, 23, 21,
19, 24, 18, 27, 23
Mendenhall and Sincich’s
method
1. The scores of 12 students in
their Mathematics activity.
4, 9, 7, 14, 10, 8, 12, 15, 10, 8,
12, 15
Linear Interpolation
2. Scores of Grade 10 – Makuli
in their Quiz in History
2 , 4 , 7 , 3 , 10 , 2 , 8 , 7, 2 , 2 ,
6 , 3 , 4 , 7 , 7 , 8 , 10
Mendenhall and Sincich’s method
1. Find the quartiles of the
problem. A group of students of
DQLNHS obtained the following
scores in their Statistics quiz:
8, 5, 4, 5, 7, 3, 6
Linear Interpolation
2. Find the lower quartile and upper
quartile of the data. The number of
days taken by each of 11 employees
to finish a job were
32, 39, 27, 23, 42, 35, 42, 29, 46,
37, 42
ASSIGNMENT:
Conduct a survey on the weight of 15
random grade 10 students of DQLNHS.
Then find for the first, second, and third
quartile. Interpret your findings and
present in front. Write your assignment
in a long bond paper.
At the end of the lesson, the
student should be able to:

1. identify the quartiles for

ungrouped data;
2. solve for the median,
upper, and lower quartiles of
a given set using the
Mendenhall and Sincich
Method and Linear
Interpolation ; and
3. Relates the concept of
measure of position Quartile
for ungroup data in real-life
situations.
