PLANE FIGURES

MENSURATION = is a mathematical name for calculating

the areas, volumes, length of sides and other
geometric parts of standard geometric shapes.
POLYGON = a closed plane figure with three or more sides
that are all straight.
Examples:
Concave Polygon = a polygon with reflex angle. At
least one of its interior angle measures more than 1800.

Convex Polygon = a polygon with no reflex angle.

0
Every interior angle is less than 180 .

AREA = it is the measurement of the amount of space
occupied by a closed plane/flat figure and is
measured in square units.

PERIMETER = the length of the line that bounds an

area.
A. RECTANGLE = a quadrilateral which has two pairs of
opposite parallel sides and of four right angles
A = LW P = 2(L + W)
L
W

Example:
Find the area and perimeter of a ship’s deck if its length is three
times its width and in rectangular form. Its width is 88 meters.
L
w
B. SQUARE = a quadrilateral whose sides are of equal
lengths and of four right angles.

S d A = s2 P = 4s

Example:
If the floor of a vessels’s cabin is in a form of a square and has an area of
1870 sq.cm, find the length of its sides, diagonal and its perimeter.
a. Find the sides: b. Find the Perimeter:
A = s2 P = 4s
C. TRIANGLE = a plane figure with three sides and three
corresponding angles.

A = ½ bh
P=a+b+c

Right Triangle Oblique / Scalene Triangle

Examples:
1. A vessel’s sail in the form of an oblique triangle with sides
a = 52cm , b = 65cm and c = 79cm. Find its area and perimeter.
a = b=

c=

a.) solve for s:

c.) P = a + b + c
2. A roof of a motor boat in the form of right triangle with side c = 89 ft and
angle A = 590, find the roof’s area. (opposite angle A is the height of the
triangle)
B

c = 89 ft

D. CIRCLE = a set of points that are at the same distance from a
fixed point called the center of the circle.

r
D

Example:
The area of a circular window frame is 2589 sq.m., find its radius,
diameter and circumference.

E. TRAPEZOID = a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides.

b2
Example:
A trapezoidal ship’s lounge with one of the parallel sides (bases) measures 66
cm,find the other parallel side if its area is 1550 sq.cm and its altitude is 87cm.
Solutions:
2. Find the height of a trapezoid if its bases are 35m and 58m respectively
and its area is 1358 sq.m.
