No ma’am!
But have you heard about these words
or have your read it somewhere?
Yes ma’am!

Let’s see what’s the meaning of these

words. First, we have literary criticism.
Roderick, please read.
Literary Criticism is the evaluation, analysis,
description, or interpretation of literary works.
This includes the classification by
genre, analysis of structure and
judgment of value.

Next, we have critique. Kindly read,

Maribel. Critique (verb) means to critically evaluate, analyze, or
give careful judgment in which you give your opinion
about a literary work.

In simple word, it means to review or

examine a literary piece.

What about a selection? what does it

mean? A selection or also literary piece/work refers to the story
that is being read or analyzed.

Critique (noun) is a detailed evaluation

or analysis of a literary piece. Critic is a person who judges, evaluates, or analyzes a
literary piece.

Who among you here knows a critic?

Or do you know someone who is a
critic? I think that English teacher can be one of the critics.

Very good!
Let’s take a bigger look at this picture.

We have five approaches in critiquing a

literary selection/piece. These are:
 Structuralist/Formalist
Approach

 Moralist
 Marxist
 Feminist
 Historical

Today, we will focus on the structuralist

or formalist approach. From the word
“formalist”, what does it mean? It is based on the “form” or the “structure.”

Correct! So, basically, we’re going to

discuss about the structure of a selection
mainly on the elements of a short story.
Who can tell me the elements of a short
story? Erica, can you enumerate the
elements of a short story. The elements of a short story are:
 Characters
 Point of View
 Imagery
 Tone
 Theme
 Settings

You have a sharp memory, very good!

Let’s try to do a character analysis on

the character of the giant in the story
“The Selfish Giant”. What is his At the beginning of the story, he was selfish and
attitude in the beginning? How about in hardhearted because he didn’t want the children to enter
the ending of the story? and play inside his garden. Near the end of the story, his
heart softens because he realized that he brought winter
into himself, and he knows that spring only returns to
the garden when the children sneak inside to play.
Therefore, he immediately made an amendment and he
let the children play inside.

Based on the story, the theme that I know are friendship,

How about the theme of the selection, and kindness. It talks that being selfish is not good
what can you say about it? because it will make us lonely and prevents us from
enjoying things. And showing kindness to others will
give us an everlasting friendship with other.
