Feature Overview
LTE4893 Cat-M1: Peak DL Throughput (Rel-14)
As LTE4893 is the evolution of
LTE4222 (Phase 1)/LTE 4442 (Phase 2)
and most of attributes are common for
all this set of features:

• Target platforms: Airscale, FSMF & FZM

• Supported bandwidth: 5, 10, 15 & 20 MHz
• Feature supports: 1Tx/1Rx,1Tx/2Rx, 2Tx/2Rx, 2Tx/4Rx,
4Tx/4Rx eNB configurations
• LTE4893 supports interworking with semi-static repetitions
(LTE4177) and dynamic repetition (LTE4494)
• Single repetition R=1 for MPDCCH, MPDSCH and MPUCCH is
supported
• The VoLTE users are excluded for multi-HARQ transmission
• Feature has an activation flag (CATMCEL: actHighHarqCatM)

Technical Details LTE4893
Evolution of Multiple HARQ processes for Cat-M UEs

• Support of 8 HARQ processes for a

Cat-M1 UE on DL to improve the single-
user peak DL
throughput compared to 3 HARQ
process
• Support of dynamic HARQ-ACK delay
to shift ACKs to another subframe,
which will allow to fit 8
HARQ processes in one subframe
• Both functionalities require Rel-14 UE

3rd HARQ Process
requires 6PRBs to
be available ➢ LTE4442: 3 DL HARQ processes in DL only
possible with : 2 PRB MPDCCH + 4PRB
MPDSCH
➢ LTE4893: PRBs configuration utilizes
solutions from LTE4442(2+4) but for up to 8
HARQ

CB008220: CAT-M in 3 MHz Carrier DL UL

Single UE Peak Throughput

5PRBS for MPUSCH

• The subframes 0 and 5 are set as invalid which
impacts the single UE UL and DL Hybrid Automatic
Repeat Request throughput, and the cell average
throughput.
• Moreover, the Cat-M1 UE peak throughput for
Release-14 UEs can be reduced. It's because a
maximum of five physical resource blocks (PRBs)
are left in UL for Cat-M1 UEs, which results in a
maximum transport block size reduction from
2984 bits to 2472 bits.
• For the Cat-M1 UEs, the subframe 0 and the
subframe 5 are marked as invalid, which impacts
the peak throughput as follows: The UL 3 Hybrid
Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) can be
downgraded to the UL 2 HARQ. Depending on
subframes in which UL grants are sent, in some
cases, only the UL 2 HARQ can be scheduled. The
DL 3 HARQ can be downgraded to the DL 2 HARQ.

sent, in some cases, only the DL 2 HARQ can be
scheduled

Feature Overview
LTE5382 Cat-M1: Coexistence with Slim Carrier in 5 MHz

• The LTE5382: Cat-M1: Coexistence With Slim Carrier in 5 MHz feature increases
radio efficiency by allowing Cat-M UEs to operate in a slim carrier within the LTE 5
MHz bandwidth.

• Cat-M UEs operate in a slim carrier where up to two PRBs are blanked on each
edge of a 5 MHz spectrum. The blanked PRBs can be either of the following
options:
• Two DL PRBs are blanked on each side (the number of blanked DL PRBs is
configurable and can be asymmetric).
• Two UL PRBs are blanked on each side (the number of blanked UL PRBs is
configurable and can be symmetric).

LTE 5382 Technical Details
Impact for legacy DL peak throughput

In DL direction slim carrier blanks 2 PRBs at each edge of bandwidth.

• Due to RBG granularity in DL available number of PRBs is further
reduced, since legacy PDSCH needs to be aligned with RBG boundary.
• Cat-M Narrowband with slim carrier ON occupies 4 PRBs, which
further reduces available capacity.
• The legacy UE throughput reduction can be linearly calculated by PRB
number variation.
• If there is no Cat-M traffic, Cat-M resources can be used by legacy
traffic, which can increase the throughput occasionally.

LTE 5382 Technical Details
Cat-M Performance – DL throughput

• For DL, the MPDSCH PRB number is reduced

to 4, which means that max TBS of 1000 bits
will be supported.
• With 6PRB, maximum 1544 bits is standardized,
however Max TBS for Cat-M1 UE is 1000 bits
in DL, which means that MCS10 with 936 bits can
be supported at maximum.
• It is currently not possible to run 3 or 8 DL HARQ with 4 PRB
allocation i.e. only 2 HARQ configuration is valid. Note that in total 6
PRB allocation is needed starting 3 HARQ (specifically 2 PRB MPDCCH
+ 4PRB MPDSCH)
• Feature under planning for SW Release 24R1 to allow 3/8 HARQ
processes: CB010763 Cat-M1 DL Peak Throughput in 5MHz with Slim
Carrier

LTE5382 Cat-M1: Coexistence with Slim Carrier in 5 MHz
• LTE 5382 Generally available
• 2 HARQ processes are supported in DL using LTE 4442.
• Current Restrictions:
• 3 HARQ processes for DL are not supported (LTE 4442)
• 8 and 10 HARQ processes for DL are not supported, i.e. turn off LTE4893 Cat-M1
Peak DL Throughput (Rel-14).

LTE5382 Cat-M1: Coexistence with Slim Carrier in 5 MHz
Single UE Peak Throughput
Max DL throughput with multiple HARQ, assumptions: Max UL throughput with multiple
HARQ, assumptions:
• Rel 13 Cat-M1 UE with max DL TBS of 1000 bits
• 4PRB allocation with LTE5382 and 2 DL HARQ • Rel 14 Cat-M1 UE with max
• Ideal radio conditions UL TBS of 2984 bits
• CAT-M System Information ~4.8% • The theoretical Peak UL
throughput is ~1Mbps
• Theoretical calculation
considers several assumptions
which are hard to have in a live
network
• From field experience it was
seen that Peak Throughput
~650Kbps can be achieved
under good radio conditions

With Slim Carrier 2PRBs are
permanently Blanked, only
4PRBs are available.
Therefore, only up to 2 HARQ
processes are possible
