Yes Sir.

Yes Sir.
Let us start our game.
Congratulations everyone, you did a great job.
C. ACTIVITY

Did you enjoy our activity? Yes sir!

Based on the activity, what do you observe?
Its all about energy, sir.
Very good! Who has any idea?
It’s about resources of electricity, sir.
Definitely correct!
Now do you want to have another activity?
Yes sir.
This time we will have an activity and you will
be grouped into four.

Please count off.. (students will do the counting)

You can now go to your respected group. Each

group should select a leader and reporter.

Our first activity in our lesson is titled, “TELL

ME”. All groups will be given a handouts of
Renewable and Nonrenewable Sources of
Energy and other materials to be used.

Leaders, kindly get your handouts and activity

materials here..

In this activity you should be able to describe

briefly and concisely on how energy is
harnessed from different sources. In short,
you’re going to make a summary from the
handouts given then you’ll do the reporting
later.
Group 1 will report Biogas and Geothermal
Energy
Group 2 will report Hydropower and Batteries
Group 3 will report Solar Cells and Biomass
Group 4 will report Fossil Fuels

You are only given 5 minutes each to finish the

task. Note that your output for this activity is
rated against the given rubric. (attachment 1)

Are we clear?
Yes, sir.
(Students are doing the task)
Time is up, are you ready to present your Yes sir!
output?

Thats good! Now lets start with the group 1..

Group 1will report about biogas and geothermal
energy.
Thats right!lets give the group 1 an angel clap.
Next to present is the group 2... Group 2 will report Hydropower and Batteries

Nice one. Lets give a nice clap to group 2.

Next will be the group 3... Group 3 will report Solar Cells and Biomass
.
Well done group 3. Lets give them a rain clap.
And last but not the least, the group 4.. Group 4 will report Fossil Fuels

That good! Lets give a mahagsay clap to group

4.
C. ANALYSIS
(The teacher will now discuss the topic)

In your previous studies you have learned that

energy is the capacity to do work. You also
learned that one form of energy can be changed
into another form. Now who can tell me what
Law in Physics States that energy cannot be
created nor destroyed, it only changes form? Law of Thermodynamics, sir.

Correct!
Now try to look around you and think of
examples of how energy is changed into
another form.
Yes Noel can you give me one example?
Sir, for example a sun’s energy is converted by
plants into chemical energy by the process
Exactly right! Who can give me another called photosynthesis.
example? Yes Alice.
Sir, solar energy from the sun is converted by
machines or appliances to mechanical energy.
Very good!
And because of that the term energy source
primarily refer to the wide variety of fuels used
for either heating, generation of electricity and
other energy conversion processes.

What are the two main types of energy sources? Renewable and Nonrenewable resources sir.

Thats right! Now who can you tell the

similarities of renewable and nonrenewable They are both natural reources sir.
resources?

Correct!
How about their differences? Who can tell the Sir, renewable resource is generated from sun,
difference between the two natural resources? wind, rain, tides and vegetation and can be
generated again and again when needed while
nonrenewable resource is one that has specific
conditions that made them and can take many
generations to reproduce.

Very good!
What are the types of renewable natural
resources? Sir, the type of renewable resources are:
Biogas, Geothermal energy, Hydropower,
Rechargeable Batteries, Solar cells and Biomas
Correct!
What about the types of nonrenewable
resources? Sir it’s Fossil Fuel only in the form of oil,
natural gas and coal.
That’s correct!

Now let’s investigate how these types of

energy are harnessed from different sources.
Sir, it is generated by the breakdown of
First is the biogas, how is biogas harnessed? organic matter by anaerobic bacteria.

Correct! But what is an example of an organic

matter that can be used to generate this kind of Cow manure sir.
natural gas?

Thats right! and how is this type of energy Sir, it is burned to generate heat or combustion
source produces electricity? engines to produce electricity.
Very well said!
Can you name a Place in our country that has a Its in Legaspi City, Albay Sir.
biogas plant?

That right!

What about the second one, do you know what

is the source of geothermal energy? Steam from deep inside the earth sir.

Thats correct! Its origin came from a Greek

word geo or “earth” and therme meaning
“heat” that means, the heat from the earth’s
underground is used as source of energy.

But how is heat from earth collected in order Through the geothermal power plant sir.
to produce electricity?

Very good.
Sir, the steam from deep inside the earth is used
Does anyone here know how does a
to drive turbines of a generator and the
geothermal power plant work?
generator produces electricity.
Exactly.

Why is the Philippines considered as one of the Sir, it’s because the Philippines is located along
world’s top producers of geothermal power? the ring of fire zone of pacific volcanoes which
has seven geothermal fields that supply about
12% of the nation’s energy.
Absolutely right.

Now what about hydropower, how is this

Sir..Hydroelectric plants use falling water from
harnessed? What is being used to generate this
a dam to turn the turbine of a generator. The
type of energy source?
generator then produces electricity.

Very good!

We have another type of energy source which is

the rechargeable batteries. How is this used in
generating electricity?
Sir a battery stores chemical energy and
converts it to electrical energy.
That’s correct! the chemical reactions in a
battery allow the flow of electrons which
provides an electric current.

What about the solar energy, how is solar

energy harnessed from the sun? By the use of solar panel sir.

Very good! In what way do solar panels work?

Sir .. solar panels contain silicon that converts
heat from the sun into electrical current.
Excellent.

How about biomass? What are considered as Garbages sir includes trees, leaves wood
biomass? chips and even animal manure and old tires.
Correct.
How are biomass used as an energy source?
Sir, these are placed into a furnace and burned.
The heat generated is used to boil water. The
steam from the boiling water is used to turn
turbines and generators to produce electricity.
Perfectly said.
Additionally, those garbages when burned
releases methane gas which is the source of
heat that can produce electricity.
The last type is the nonrenewable one, the fossil
fuels. What are fossil fuels? These are the remains of dead plants and
animals sir.
Thats correct. What are different examples of
fossil fuels?
Sir, these are oil, natural gas and coal.
Very good!
How are fossil fuels formed?
These are formed through specific conditions
when heat and pressure changes the dead plant
and animals that are buried beneath the earth
Exactly right! That is why they are for hundreds of millions of years.
nonrenewable because when they’re gone it
take millions more years to replenish.

But how are fossil fuels used to generate By burning or combust fossil fuels sir.
electricity?

Correct. What is the term for burning matter to Thermal generation sir.
generate electricity?

That’s right. However, electricity isn’t produce

by comubustion itself. The burning of coal and
oil heats giant boilers filled with water. This
transforms liquid water into steam that creates
pressure which can able to rotate a steam
turbine that produce electricity.

Did you understand class? Yes sir!

D. ABSTRACTION

You see how amazing those energy sources

produces electricity.
Can you identify which source of energy is I think sir, it’s hydrothermal energy.
used in our province?

Yes that’s right. What else? Solar energy and batteries.

Exactly! Which one is the cheapest? Why? Solar energy because its unlimited and you can
have it without buying it.
Very good.

Now that you learned about the types of

energy sources, do you know their benefits and
limitations? Or shall we say their advantages
and disadvantages?

Try to identify the benefits and limitations

(students will answer in the board)
brought by each energy source by filling the
table. I have strips of paper here with written
words. I need volunteer to paste each of this to
corresponding types of energy source. Utilization of waste produced domestically
Energy Advantage Disadvantage
source Emits foul odor no waste/pollution
biogas Expensive reservoirs cannot easily be found
Geothermal
energy Environmental impact weather dependent
hydrothermal
batteries Portable limited life and the need to replace
Solar energy Reduce electricity bills waste reduction
biomass
Now you already know the types of energy and
how they are harnessed from different sources.

Do you have any questions? No sir.

Did you understand clearly the discussion?

Yes sir
E. APPLICATION .
Now let us have another activity in order to
relate more about the lesson. With the same
group, locate the different power plants in
the Philippine map using dash as the
approximate location. Write your answers
in the designated boxes.
You are given 3 minutes to finish the task. Yes sir.
Am I clear?

(students will answer the activity)

F. GENERALIZATION
Today, you learned the following:
 Energy is the capacity to do work. One
form of energy can be changed into
another form.
 The First law of Thermodynamics
states that energy cannot be created
nor destroyed; it only changes form.
 There are two main types of energy
sources namely; renewable and
nonrenewable.
 A renewable resource is one that can
be renewed or replenished in a
reasonable amount of time. These are;
biogas, geothermal energy,
hydroelectric power, batteries, solar
energy and biomass.
 A nonrenewable resource is one that
has specific conditions that made them
and can take any generations to
reproduce. Sometimes they are not
likely to occur again just like the fossil
fuels.
