New VEC throttle area settings for RTA 84T-D engines

Introduction
The RTA 84T-D engine is tailored to achieve economic propulsion of very large crude carriers
based on their operating profile. One distinguishing feature of this engine is the Variable Exhaust
Valve Closing (VEC) mechanism that closes the valve earlier in part load condition to achieve a
better fuel economy. This is an attractive feature for VLCC’s when transiting at slow speed
through restricted waters or during a ballast voyage when the power requirement is within 45 to
65% of MCR. It has been observed over the past few years that the engines have been
experiencing increased component and exhaust gas temperatures during the mentioned part load
condition sometime after entering into service. In many cases this is attributed to a combination
of heavy running propeller, hull fouling and normal wear on engine components which reduce
the sea margin available during part load operation. Following extensive trials on an engine,
from sea trial to few months in service, the effect of this loss in sea margin was tracked and the
engine fine tuned to increase the margin in the most affected load range. This was achieved by
changing certain VEC parameters on the Remote Control System.

1. VEC Parameter change

For each installation the existing VEC settings should be recorded and a standard set of
performance readings taken with our shop test template (see enclosure) before the parameters are
changed. It is important that parameters highlighted in the performance sheet should be recorded
as a minimum for this modification. Measurements should be made at 50, 60, 75 and 90% load.
Table I shows the list of DENIS parameters that should be changed to the new values on the
Remote Control System when the engine is stopped. Caution needs to be exercised when
changing the settings as the Remote Control System parameter numbers for the corresponding
DENIS parameters may differ for each installation with the same supplier. A confirmation trial
should be performed with the same load profile after the change, parameters recorded in the
attached template, and the results reported back to customersupport.ch@wartsila.com.
