Press Statement - For immediate release and to be used in its entirety

From the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, Akron Central School District

April 19, 2024

Recently our District handled a situation involving allegations of potential violence directed toward the school
community by a student. Immediate action was taken in collaboration with the Akron Police Department and
the Erie County Sheriff's Office. After discussion with law enforcement, it was determined that no imminent
threat existed. However, as the situation unfolded and additional facts were learned, it became evident that the
District had a responsibility to file an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) which prohibits the possession of
firearms in the home.

In situations like this, the District will always act in an abundance of caution. The safety and well-being of our
students, staff, and faculty is our top priority. I want to assure our school community that our campus is safe.

I have attached a copy of my letter sent to the school community for your information.

Sincerely,

Andrea S. Kersten

Dear Akron School Community,

The purpose of this communication is to inform you that in recent weeks the District handled a situation
involving allegations of potential violence directed toward our school community. The student involved was
immediately removed from school and is no longer in attendance. In consultation with a national school
violence prevention expert and in collaboration with the Akron Police Department and the Erie County Sheriff's
Office, we took prompt action to ensure the safety of our campus, including but not limited to seeking an
Extreme Risk Protection Order from the judicial system.

We understand that such news can be deeply unsettling and provoke anxiety within our school community. In
situations such as this, the District will always act in an abundance of caution. I want to assure you that the
safety and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty is our top priority. As a reminder, we have the presence
of law enforcement on campus at all times.

If at any time you or your child hear or see anything concerning, please do not hesitate to reach out to school
officials immediately. We encourage parents and guardians to discuss with their children the importance of
responsible communication.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our school administrators or my
office. We are here to assist and support you.

As always, thank you for your partnership and understanding.

Sincerely,

Andrea S. Kersten
