Melody is a series of tones arranged in a horizontal position. These tones are played or sung one at
a time. It is recognizable and pleasing expression of composer’s thoughts and ideas. Melody is an
element of music that is considered the most expressive and meaningful. It has pitch, form, and
direction. It may go up, down or it may be repeated.
Interval is the distance between two same notes or two different notes. It may also be the
difference in pitch between any two tones. An interval can be harmonic or melodic.
Harmonic intervals are the notes arranged vertically.

Melodic intervals are the notes arranged horizontally.

The different intervals are set either by step or by skips. The smallest interval used in music is the
half step. The following are other intervals in music that can help you identify easily the distances
of the notes on the scale.
1. Prime or unison – two notes are written on the same line or space have the same pitch
2. Second interval – there are two steps between two notes.
3. Third interval – there are three steps between two notes.
4. Fourth interval – there are four steps between two notes.
5. Fifth interval – there are five steps between two notes.
6. Sixth interval – there are six steps between two notes
7. Seventh interval – there are seven steps between two notes.
8. Octave – there are eight steps between two notes.

The notes on the staff are written with specific

distances or intervals. An interval is the distance between two same notes or two different notes.
Learning about intervals gives us an idea on how to combine notes to produce better sounds.

What are the tonal movements or melodic directions?

 Stepwise motion
If a melody moves between two neighboring notes, like G and A, or G and F# this is called a step.

 Skip wise Motion

Motion can also be between two notes that do not neighbor each other, like G and B, or G and E. This is
called a skip.

 Parallel Motion/Repetition
Parallel motion is when two melodies move in the same direction while keeping the intervals between the
notes of each melody the same.

Major Scales Pattern

A major scale is built with a fixed series of whole and half steps: WS-Ws-HS-Ws-WS-WS-HS. The half steps
are located between the 3rd to 4th notes and 7th to 8th notes. No other scale has this construction It is what gives
the major scale its uniqueness. The C major scale utilized all the white keys on the piano. It is the only major scale
without accidentals. Some major scales, however, need the use of accidentals to follow the correct pattern of WS-
WS-HS-WS-WS-WS-HS.

Minor Scales Pattern

In every major scale, there is a minor scale. Both major and minor scales use a specific pattern of whole
and half steps.

Each major key has a relative natural minor key. To know the relative minor key of a major key, find the note on
the sixth scale degree. For example, in the C major scale, the sixth scale is "A. "Therefore, the relative natural minor key
of the C major is the A minor.

A major key sound brighter and happier. A minor key sounds darker and
melancholic. This mainly lies on the third note that defines the sound of the minor key. Sad and contemplating
songs are often composed in the minor keys. However, you also hear upbeat tunes using minor keys.
Scale is a series of notes arranged in an ascending or descending manner.
Key signature is a set of sharps of flats at the beginning of the staff indicating the tonality of a
composition

In the keyboard above, we can observe that from C to D is a whole step since there is a key between them.
D to E is also a whole step. However, E to F is a half-step since there is no key in between; so is B to C.
