QUARTILES

Activity 1: Find the quartiles

1. This table represents the scores of 50 students from 10 – Dalton in their Math test.
Scores Frequency
46-50 4

41-45 8

36-40 13

31-35 9

26-30 10

21-25 6

Using the data above look for the Quartile 1

Solution:

STEP 1. Look for the value of N and i, where N = total frequency, i = size of class interval

N=
i=

STEP 2. Create a table with lower class boundaries and less than cumulative frequency.
Lower class boundary is found by subtracting 0.5 units from the lower class limit. (Lower class limit,
e.g 46-50, 46 is the lower class limit)

Cumulative Frequency is found by adding the frequency of your first category to the second
category, then so on until the last category and the last category should be equal to your N.

Scores Frequency LB <Cf

46-50 4

41-45 8

36-40 13

31-35 9

26-30 10

21-25 6 20.5 6

STEP 3. Solve for Q1, where Qk=KN/4 = ___ th score. This means that Q1 is in the ____th position
of the distribution. Thus, we need to find the class interval where the ___th data is contained using
the less than cumulative frequency (<𝑐𝑓) column that you make in step 2.

STEP 4. Use the formula for Quartile given grouped data.

where:

LB = lower boundary of the Qk class

N = total frequency

Cfb= cumulative frequency of the class before the Qk class

FQk = frequency of the Qk class

i = size of class interval

k = nth quartile, where n = 1, 2, and 3

Q1 = ________
Therefore, 25% of the Grade 10- Dalton obtain less than or equal to _____ scores in their Math test.

Find the Second Quartile:

STEP 3. Solve for Q2, where Qk=KN/4 = ___ th score. This means that Q2 is in the ____th position

of the distribution. Thus, we need to find the class interval where the ___th data is contained

using the less than cumulative frequency (<𝑐𝑓) column that you make in step 2.

STEP 4. Use the formula for Quartile given grouped data.

Q2 = ________

Therefore, 50% of the Grade 10- Dalton obtain less than or equal to _____ scores in their Math test.

Find the Third Quartile:

STEP 3. Solve for Q3, where Qk=KN/4 = ___ th score. This means that Q3 is in the ____th position

of the distribution. Thus, we need to find the class interval where the ___th data is contained

using the less than cumulative frequency (<𝑐𝑓) column that you make in step 2.

STEP 4. Use the formula for Quartile given grouped data

Q3= ________

Therefore, 75% of the Grade 10- Dalton obtain less than or equal to _____ scores in their Math

test.

2. This table represents the scores of 45 students from 10 – Rutherford in their Math Quiz.

Scores Frequency
